1978 Omega De Ville

This just arrived today. I was choosing between it and a 1960s Omega Seamaster Cosmic. A lot of people probably would've chosen the Cosmic. And initially I did too.

But this one made me go oooh more than the Cosmic. As I've mentioned in various comments around WatchCrunch, the theme of my collection is 1 watch (preferably dress watch) for every decade from the 1930s to present. I already had a 1960s Vulcain, which I love to bits, so the Cosmic would've been redundant. The only real reason to get the Cosmic was that it was an Omega.

Well, this one is also an Omega. It's not a Seamaster (which I already have with my 2008 Seamaster Pro 300m), making it a plus. It's from the 1970s, which adds to my collection theme instead of duplicating an item in it. It's a proper dress watch, and it's a tank. I've always wanted one of those. There's no way I'll be able to afford a Cartier but I didn't want just any tank-style watch. Omega is a good, prestigious brand. It's not Cartier but it's luxury all the same. At least to me and the vast majority of the world's population.

So, there you have it. My second Omega. I've got a 1990s 120m (another Seamaster) in queue to purchase that I'm committed to. It belongs to a friend who's willing to wait for me. We said around May of this year.

Ultimately, I'm missing a 1930s, 1950s, 1980s and then I'm done. Locking up the shop and moving on to other things--don't forget to turn off the lights before you go. Well, I say that but I've got that JLC Master Ultrathin grail that I'm shooting for for my 50th birthday. Oh and some low- to mid-range watches I'm interested in acquiring. But the CORE collection will be done. Well, okay, maybe just Omega. I'm done getting Omega...

Yeah, I don't believe me either.

Looks like a great timepiece Bruno, I've got a soft spot for vintage affordable Omegas 😍.

What caliber movement does it have? I've recently purchased a manual wind De Ville for the wife, and it's Cal.625 seems to be quite a nice unit 👍.

A while ago I jumped on a little 80's Seamaster quartz number for myself, and sits really neatly under a dressy shirt cuff...a few bargains to be had I think.

This summer I've got my eye on getting hold of a Seamaster Professional 300m if there's room in the budget, but would definitely like to add to the 2021 38mm De Ville Prestige that I also have 🤔.

For me it was a Seiko that was the gateway drug to this horological journey. Enjoy your collecting 😎👍.

I really like the rectangular Omegas, and you’ll have plenty of round watches from other decades.

The movement is the same as your wife's De Ville: Cal. 625.

Those are some really nice Omegas you got there. I agree that affordable vintage Omegas are quite attractive to a budding collector like me, very tempting. I do want to stop at 3 though. I don't want to just buy Omega. Quite happy with what I have right now. But who knows what I find in the future.

This is true. This is another reason why the De Ville won over the Cosmic.

Haha. Yes, the future is another country. I will enjoy my honeymoon and try not to think about hotel bill attached to it.

Stunning! I love the quirkiness of it. 70s Omega and rectangular sound like a recipe for something awesome.

Same. Love non-standard case. Though one of its quirks is a 19mm lug size, making it irritatingly impossible to shop straps for.
