Conflicted about my Seiko 5 Sports

I recently got a Seiko 5 sports srpd71. I was really excited to get it, because I got a really good deal on it off eBay, I like the look, and I could afford it. Now that I have it, I'm conflicted. I like it, but I don't love it. But I can't quite say why I don't love it. I like the look, I like the movement inside, I like being able to see the movement inside, but there's something about it that doesn't quite sit well with me. Maybe it's the fact that I feel it's more of a piece of jewelry than a true tool. I wear my timex weekender to work and wore it almost every day before I got the Seiko. The thing is a tank, and has shrugged off most of what I put it through. I'm very confident while wearing it, but I feel like I'm wearing a fragile piece of jewelry while wearing the seiko. I'm not used to buying expensive watches, well expensive for me that is. Should I sell the Seiko and buy a Timex mechanical? Or some other mechanical watch?

I’m actually thinking of getting the Srpd71 to mod, don’t baby it it can take a beating. i’s a good watch but if you feel disconnected with it then let it go and find something that connects with you. Also slap a nice link bracelet instead of the mesh  bracelet it will look so much different and prbly feel different as well.

I put a nato strap on it. I like the look better, but still something's off about it. Thx tho

I think you will find that your Seiko 5 will stand up pretty well; no need to worry about it or baby it. I have a few Seiko 5 watches, including a couple of the new Seiko 5s, and they make great everyday watches.

I am not sure which mechanical Timex you were thinking of to replace your Seiko 5, but I have to say that the Timex Marlin automatic I have in my collection is not as robust as either of my Seiko 5s. Also, there is not much price difference between Seiko 5 and Timex mechanical watches, at least in the US.

I agree on there being no reason to baby the SRPD because it can hold up to a lot of abuse. It's my yard work and fun beat around (no worry) watch and it's been dunked, chewed by the dog, scraped on the hardscape, buried in mulch/ rocks/, etc.  After wearing it, I just take it in the shower with me and clean it up.

I get being worried about something if it is expensive to you. If you sell it but end up missing it, check at Costco if you want a little more peace of mind.  Coincidentally, I saw this one when I went to Costco this past weekend (not that I stop by the watch counter every time I go there to see if there might be anything interesting).

Thank you, I will wear it for another week or so to see if I still want to get rid of it. Your comments have made me more confident in the watch. Out of curiosity, does your Marlin have hacking on it?

No, it doesn't. It has the Miyota 8215 movement in it, I believe. I know it is a Miyota 8000 series movement without hacking.

The watch is likely more capable than you think, but sometimes we just don't like certain watches.

I had a Seiko SNK809 that "everybody" else seems to love, but I hated it it. Right now I have a Vario Trench Watch that I have worn once, for about 5 min... I don't like it, even though there is nothing wrong with the watch, it just doesn't do anything for me.

I agree with a watch not clicking. Believe it or not, I have a Hamilton Khaki mechanical in my collection that I have never clicked with at all. That is the watch for me that "everyone" has and loves, but I have never liked it on my wrist. It just feels off to me. I hold on to it hoping it will click with me someday, but so far no luck. It is the same with my Tissot Seastar; I never really clicked with it, so it sits in a box. 😢 The Seastar is earmarked for my grandson's high school graduation if he still has the passion for collecting watches, but the Khaki will remain in my collection.

My impression was that @borger  was more concerned with the robustness of the Seiko 5 as an everyday watch, not that they didn't click with the watch. If that is the case, maybe a different Seiko 5 might click. The SRPG series and the SRPH series both have different aesthetics that might be more appealing for an everyday watch; more similar to a Weekender.

You know, I saw a few variants on Jomashop for even less! The prices are definitely coming down on the new Seiko 5s.

I guess the problem I have is that when I bought that seiko, and it really set in, The more I appreciated my cheap timex. I don't know what it is about the seiko I don't like. I really don't. I'll give it another week, and I don't know what kind of watch I'll get after that. I like mechanical watches, and I really like being able to watch the inner workings move. Maybe if the watch never really does it for me, I'll sell it and save up for another seiko, as the general thinking of the less affordable timex's seems to be "eh"

It's hard to beat a reliable, and affordable watch like a Timex. I've been rocking a Timex since I was a kid back in the 90s.

Have you looked at the Timex Waterbury Dive Automatics? If there is a store near you that carries them you could try one on in person, to see if it's affordable mechanical watches you don't like, or just that particular model of Seiko 5.

Waterbury Dive Automatic 40mm Leather Strap Watch - Timex CA

I haven't handled one myself, but they look pretty cool to me.

·

Your Seiko is a lot bigger than your Timex. 4mm is a lot for wearability and its a diver so that feature is almost never needed. Your Timex will come in handy when your Seiko goes out of time because factory tolerances are around 20 secs a day either way.

I have looked at those, but decided against them due to the movements lacking hacking. They look amazing tho. Definitely my favorite looking diver. But I constantly reset my watch, and need hacking. However, a dressy marlin is on my "buy when you actually have money to spend" list

Part of the fun with watches is understanding your tastes and form of self-expression, which is going to change over time. If you don’t love a watch, you shouldn’t keep it.

·

Hey I understand what you mean but first of all I have had mine for 3 years now and it has done everything with me so I don’t think you need to worry at all. Also I have kept it on the bracelet for half a year and it didnt speak to me the way it does now. After ich changed to a nato I fell in love with it but now I have it on a canvas strap and I adore it completely. I wear it the most even tho I have much more expensive watches. And with the canvas strap it sits lower to the wrist and isn’t as bulky.

I don't know how many watches you've owned over time, but some watches just don't work once you try wearing them over time. I once bought a Laco which ticked every box for what it was, (Flieger, tick, made by a proper Flieger company, tick, looked good, tick, etc), but wearing it never gave me a thrill. It just didn't feel 'right' on me. I ended up selling it. Unless you can afford to just put something away and forget about it, selling it is the logical thing to do. Try something else. You will find watches that just resonate from the first time you wear them. Strive for those. Don't stick with one you're half hearted about.

·

Its gotta be the case size, weight or non comfort of the Strap in the seiko. Go with softer band/strap first. Then Reevaluate.

Wear it some more and see if your attitude changes. (Sometimes even a change of the watch strap changes everything.) But don't believe that you need to baby your Seiko in any way. They were designed for daily wear. If you really don't like it, sell or gift it by all means. Nobody but you knows what feels right on your wrist.

They got some cool watches at Costco. The book selections have gotten a bit lame!

I went through similar with mine. For me putting it on a NATO really helped. It fits much better on my wrist. I still occasionally switch to the metal, but only for evening wear.
