State of the Watchbox

Figured I’ve never done this but thought it be fun excuse to take some photos. Only plan to focus about what’s new in 2022 but I am sure you can figure out the rest in the box.

I got about 18 total watches as part of my collection. I won’t claim to wear them all, usually 2-3 in heavy rotation at a time and then I’ll sprinkle in the others depending on my mood. I live by the get what makes you happy (and can comfortably afford) motto - which is to say I don’t own anything made of unobtanium. 18 is a lot of watches… and I am using my box to tame this addiction: for every watch that comes in, one has to go out. This year brought 4 new kids to the pool.

Image

Starting with the first watch was the Mathey-Tissot 1970 Chrono. This is a reissue of sorts from M-T’s past catalog, though this one features a far more colorful dial… with the triple blue registers giving it a bit of that El Primero vibe. Its definitely the brightest watch in my collection, as I am unfortunately a very boring, black dial watch owner.

Image

Speaking of black dials, next up was my first watch from Boldr Supply Co, a model called the Kraken. A collaboration with Nitecore that has a very cool topo-pattern dial. This watch checked two other boxes for me as well - it was my first titanium and first PVD watch. I just recently purchased the titanium bracelet from Boldr to match to this, which I am hoping will mean it gets a bit more wrist time in the near future.

Image

Next up is the Timex Q GMT - released earlier this year just before the boon of Seiko NH34a based GMTs hit the market. The minute this watch dropped I knew it was going to find a pillow in the box. Just really digging that aluminum bezel. Been a big Timex fan lately, with the Q’s being hardest to pass up. Considered adding the Batman colorway for awhile, but felt it would just take wrist time from this.

And finally, the big purchase this year was the recent Mido Ocean Star GMT collab with the Dink. Just a lot of wonderful details - and styling that I am naturally drawn to. At this stage, I don’t see myself wanting another GMT, but only time will tell (ha-ha).

Image

Finally, the state of the watchbox wouldn’t be complete without speaking to some of the straps I got this year too. Two straps from Xeric: the blue ribbed-horoween rally strap and a green wool herringbone strap. Never been drawn to Xeric’s watches, but really love both these straps. From the Sydney Strap Co the grey wool herringbone, also a great strap perfect for the winter. I have another strap not seen here but found on my SARB from Horology Hour, black epsom leather with white stitching that really transform that watch. I had a couple of new single-pass nato straps from CNS find their way onto a couple watches this summer. And lastly I have a deployment-style leather strap coming in from the Strap Tailor hopefully by end of the year.

Well, that’s my box-o-junk. Don’t see anything in the near future finding a pillow, though still in the honeymoon phase with the Mido. There is always something though that tempts my wallet and challenges my marriage. 😂

It’s a toolbox I repurposed. Re-felted and built the watch and strap organization.

This box is awesome. Well the box and it's content 😁

From pinch-zooming in I think we only have one watch in common, but there are many pieces I really like. 🤩

I've designed one very similar in my head, the only real difference being that I want to tilt the watches up about 15-20 degrees.

If I found an old toolbox though, I love repurposing stuff.

Good to know if/when I ditch this box I have potential buyers 😂

That you do, my friend. That you do

About the only one who commented on one of the watches I mentioned, so thank you 😊 Its a nice watch that’s grown on me the longer I’ve owned it… at first I felt it was a bit too flashy (again boring black dial watch owner) but I realize maybe that’s not a bad thing for a change. If I could choose today though, I am fairly certain I would end up with the newer black dial version which is more akin to the original.

I’ve always been on the look out for an old-school deep (3”) drawer flat file - seems like the perfect solution, or maybe that’s the architect in me 😂 Good luck 👍

The black is nice, but I would totally choose yours over the black one. If a Zenith El Primero and a Sinn 103 St had a child, it would be your watch! Beautiful piece! 😉

I'm very curious about the plaque in pic 2(?) where it starts "You have chosen...", if it's ok OP would you mind sharing what it says in full?

It’s from the Last Crusade, what the knight speaks to Indy after he discovers the grail.

You have chosen wisely. But beware the Grail cannot pass beyond the Great Seal.

I ended up removing the old toolbox badges and wanted to replace with something special... quote from my favorite movie, which often gets used with respect to conversations around “grail watches”. 👍

I really like the box, But the star of the show is the Mathey-Tissot 1970 Chrono! It is a smoke Show! Love it!

Thanks very much! New straps are always (mostly always) cheaper than new watches 😂 Sometimes the best way to get that fix in without emptying the wallet. 👍
