2023 New Year Watch Aspirations

Let’s not call them resolutions… that seems to committal. 😂

But looking ahead to the New Year, what are some of your aspriations with regards to the hobby? Here are a couple of mine to get the ball rolling:

  1. Sell/Gift more than I buy
I know, very wishful thinking on my part. I tend to gift away most my watches - so birthdays and Christmas grant me opportunities to add to my own collection while still seeing treasured pieces on my family’s wrists.
  2. Dip my first toe into the vast vintage pool
I don’t know what’s held me back thus far - maybe its having too many modern watches out there that I want, and/or its being worried about the potential maintenance of vintage watch. I’ll find something fun and random, and go from there.
  3. Go to my first Wind Up.
These always seem like super fun events. Being Seattle based, hope they do one on the West Coast again - if it’s California, I could couple that trip up with seeing family. Crossing my fingers for San Diego 😂 … or at least somewhere sunny!
  4. Watch Art
I plan to do some watch related posters or stickers - nothing too serious like those fully hand-rendered sketches of watch movements. Something more fun. It’ll be mostly for myself but I’ll drop’em here too in case others are interested.
  5. More Watch Photos
I took a break from social for a bit this year to get a little healthier mentally. This took me out of the habit of taking photos as well (at least of watches), so hope to get back into that as well.

Funny you mentioned watch art. I just designed some of that last night and picked up the print at Walgreens this morning, and it's up on my wall. I plan on doing more of that. Also, your first one would fit me. I'm going to start selling and gifting several pieces because I have overbought this year. I have too many divers and too many dress pieces, so that also is a goal next year.

I am going to buy a watch for my 40th bday.  Leaning towards a birthyear speedy.

I would also like to go to a windup.  Hopefully they do something in the southeast.

I am guessing something Tag Heuer related to pair with the new watch?! Gotta share what you cooked up with us.

As for the overbuying, at least the gifting part is a lot of fun. I always get excited about giving a loved one a new-to-them watch. They are not as nuts as I am about watches but I know there is a healthy interest. Plus, shiny thing equals good - its the family credo! I think my favorite part is just  sitting with them and sharing what makes that particular piece cool. They might never have the same love for the watch as I did but the conversation alone is priceless (for me).

Hopefully they share where they plan to do the Wind Up events early in the year. I honestly wouldn’t mind even traveling somewhere new… if it was the South East, I’d love to see to visit New Orleans as I’ve never been. 🍻

You are correct, sir!

You got it on the head, for me will be commitment to one watch I aspire without deviations.

That’s tough when I’m always lurking around…

Good luck on yours 😉

Very cool - love seeing the old advertisements used!

Same with you, bud -- "Dip my first toe into the vast vintage pool. I’ll find something fun and random, and go from there." A few weeks ago, there were 2 vintage piece I eyed. Hearing all the wisdom from vintage collectors, I got some wise advice from @MrBloke and @Aurelian. Really helped me pause and ponder vs. blindly going for it. Moving forward, will still consult them on pieces I seriously consider.

I plan to add 2 more cheap watches and possibly get something to display them in .

·

First I have to figure out a way to make more money to supplement the disease-watch collecting. Or stop spending money on buying watches. So will stick to one’s that I really want.
Never sold a watch so might try selling few that I don’t want. Haven’t decided which ones yet.

These are the ones I want to add to my collection:
The unobtainium of watch world at retail - #rolex Explorer II Pepsi.

Huge #omega fan so would add green ceramic Seamaster 300m to my collection

Start venturing into other brands like JLC

Was never into vintage but missed out on 2 vintage Rolex presidential because didn’t pull the trigger in time. might search one with birth year and do it in 2023.

I turn 30 next year in March. The idea would be to get a job which doesn't pay shit. Afterwards, I would love to get my Oris Aquis with the Caliber 400. If for some reason I do extremely well next year, I'd get my Speedy, my favorite watch of all time.

Cheap is in the eye of the beholder… I’d say more affordable 🙃 Anything in particular you are looking at? Lots of great options out there for sure. Finding something to display the collection in sounds a lot more fun - maybe something like @wombat24 : https://www.watchcrunch.com/wombat24/posts/hand-made-watch-cabinet-21814#comment-270191

Disease indeed! The green ceramic 300 is gorgeous 🔥

I never thought about a birth year watch as also something ”vintage” but maybe the 80s can now be considered vintage...? Would be fun to find something for that same year - great call! 👍

Aquis is a nice watch - especially with the Caliber 400 equipped… but man a Speedy would make a hell of a big 3-0 gift. Good luck on the job search! 🤙

I already know what watches I would like to purchase. But most of them (all of them if I'm honest) are completely implausible at the moment. So fixing that would probably be better.

I have pulled the trigger on a Lorus greendial watch.

I've given away a Gshock and a vintage Casio A158. Nothing makes me happier than having a gathering months later and seeing the watches still on their wrist.
