Why did Casio spoil this watch?

I reviewed a titanium Casio Oceanus a few months back. It had fixed end links carved out of the case, meaning you couldn't use alternative straps (despite the drilled lugs, ironically).

I recently tried another, the T200, and while this watch is far better looking (and smaller), the same issue remains.

Why do brands do this? I've seen Citizen do the same on high cost titanium watches (alongside Swatch on their stuff obviously).

Is this simply an anti-consumer move to encourage spending on a whole new watch if the bracelet breaks? Or is there perhaps a structural behind this that I haven't considered?

Very curious to know your thoughts.

I suppose maybe they admire their design so much, that the company feels that the watch would look worse on anything other than that bracelet.
This would be a very bold assumption to say the least 😂 and either way it seems anti-consumer.

I suspect they do it to force people to buy straps/bracelets from them.

In my case it just means I don't buy their watches.

Everyone has something that gets their giggle bits all a-twitter. I think Pepsi bezels are ghastly, but clearly I’m in the minority on that. Along the same lines, for as much as an integrated band is a deal breaker 9/10 times for me, I’m sure there are some folks out there who love them.

My guess is that Citizen knows its customers, and we aren't their typical customers. Perhaps more than any other major watch brand, I suspect that most consumers that buy Citizen are one and done.  They want a reliable solar quartz watch that keeps good time and won't break the bank. They don't plan on changing bracelets. In ten or fifteen years if anything goes wrong they will just toss the watch and buy another.

Contrast them to Seiko.  With Seiko, can you really have just one? I have more than one and I am not on the Seiko bandwagon.  Seiko is like chips (or crisps), you can't stop at one and they know it.

If you sold leather goods you could choose to sell wallets (one will last until it wears out) or handbags (one for every season or mood). The integrated bracelet passes unnoticed by their buyers or is preferred because they now don't have to replace leather straps at a jewelry store.

I really like some of the Oris offerings but I just can't pull the trigger because of the proprietary bracelet thing. Let's face it, sometimes a nato strap is just right for the occasion, isn't it? I'm guessing that they must know this is hurting sales, don't they? I don't know why they do that.

I’m not into the fixed bracelet thing, it’s like fake air intakes and plastic steel wheel covers that look like alloys on cars. Ew! 😂 I do like a proper integrated bracelet designs on things like the Tissot PRX, etc. Citizen do quite a lot of weird things like this. I’ve seen big chonk dive style watches with fixed bezels in their lineup, that’s a worse sin if you ask me. 🤮

I think thats how they want that certain watch to be.

If I cannot replace the strap, I do not buy the watch.

·

Now for a homage I really like that👍

I think there is a T200 sold with an interchangeable leather strap. It's the only one I'd ever consider buying. Where's the fun if you can't change up straps?
