Sinn 556a - Fleiger or field watch?

I have seen many posts about the Sinn 556a and there seems to be a mixed bag of people who think this watch is a pilots watch and others who think this is a field watch. On Sinn’s website it’s just considered a “sporty watch”.

So, which one do you think it is?

I think it is a gada watch with some pilot touch on the indices

It's perhaps a little more rugged and water resistant than most pilot watches. This may lead to people nudging it into field watch duty. For me it's an everyday, everywhere watch.

It's a pilot's watch, it's supposed to resemble the clock in a cockpit. People weirdly seem to assume that the only pilot's watches were made for the Luftwaffe back in the 30s-40s...

If a Rolex Explorer or Tudor Ranger are considered field watches, then my GSAR is a Pilot's watch... It's legible, has a timing bezel, and the same dial and hands as the Navigator.

I read somewhere that pilot watches were developed during the Second World War and the main criteria for those watches were a large, easy-to-read dial with an emphasis on distinguishing the upper and lower half of the dial differentelly then with numbers so that the pilot could orient himself very quickly when reading the time when the plane is tilted to one side or if he is doing an upside-down turn and is turned 180 degrees. It turned out to be the most effective to put a triangle at twelve o'clock and thus distinguish the halves of the dial. This watch has nothing like that besides the fact that even dial seems too small, and I would say that today's fighters are even much faster than they were during the Second World War, so I doubt that the pilot will have time to decide whether he sees a shaky 1122 or 66 during the flight. Although who knows if today's pilots even use wristwatches

In their own description they mention the overall aeronautical theme. Either way, I like it.

Even Sinn are letting you decide for yourself. The 556 is placed in the "Instrument Watches" category, together with pilot's watches and the EZM 7 & 12 which definitively are NOT pilot watches.

Field watch imho

Dont know really, it is like the iwc mark series is a uk field and flieger watch mix and match of both queues. 39 and under field 40mm and over pilot can be a valid point to try to split them.

The dial 36912 is inspired by the typo of Cockpit instruments sold by Sinn. But the size is more of a field watch.

Bit like a rolex explorer and airKing share quite similar design.

But I do love mine regardless

To me it's a field watch but I get the argument for a pilot watch.

Either way I want one! I think it looks great!

Too small to be considered a Pilot Watch in my opinion. I'd go with aviation instrument inspired field watch.

Sinn categorizes the 556 as an instrument watch, and states “These watches have their origin in cockpit navigation clocks, which have a long tradition at Sinn.”

Who sits in cockpits? Pilots.

Just sayin’

I mean don't get me wrong I love pilot watches, but when I look for a watch one of the first things I look for is if the watch has a unique design or style, which most of pilot watches don't have (at least the ones I know), so I'm going to go with the field watches.
