When is this annoying practice going to end?

The picture was taken last month in the week Tudor Pelagos 39 was released. I went to my local AD to try on the watch and was told that this is an exhibition piece. Fast forward to yesterday, I went to the same AD again to cheekily ask when will my watch arrive and they sold the exhibition piece 3 days ago. At the same time, there was another mandarin speaking Sales Advisor serving two Chinese customers and I overhead the conversation. The SA told them we currently do not have the Tudor and Rolex models that you viewed for sale and you will have to be put on a waitlist for them. and frankly speaking, we will allocate the watches to those who have purchase history of x amount. so if you buy other watches that are available now and have built enough purchases, that will put you higher in the list. They actually have all the hot sports rolexes in store. The daytonas, sub, gmts and so on. I don't think I will ever get the call for the watch I tried. This is not the first time I hear this myself but it just feels like outright extortion.

I had the 42mm before but didn't like the thickness. People used to laugh at Tudor. How time has changed. Although I still like the watch, the sale tactic made me feel lukewarm about the brand. I would rather spend on something that gives more value.

I wonder how long this’ll continue given how the global economy is faring……

·

Its a pretty gold digger they pimp out to the highest bidder. Avoid that game.

·

Tudors are more easy to come by as compared to Rolex. Wait for sometime and most jewelers will have it on their website. Don’t have to go to AD to be mistreated.
For Rolex, at retail price, you might have to play the game

·

There are too many other nice watches on the market that you can buy today.

·

It ends when you choose to end it… meaning stop going to that said AD.

Head to the next dealer and move on. I personally have never bought from an AD but thats because I love buying Preowned full sets instead…

·

Sadly it's just a wait game till the hype cools down.

I placed my name to a few AD's locally here in HK for a Pelagos FXD during Dec 2021. Till now i never got a call. The ones that you can add your email to, they would send you an auto reply saying oh this watch is in high demand, please contact our AD shops to get the latest info.

Now fast forward, I see the FXD being sold cheaper then retail from both local private sellers or grey market shops.

Lol. I don't have many choice at this part of the world. Only two different AD's but they operate more or less the same way. That said, I find some micro and independent brands offering top notch products.

Are you planning to get it from the grey market?

holding one on display for a month at least gave some the chance to try them ... and yeah perhaps the guy who got the first one was a preferred client ... just the way it works i'm afraid .. or maybe he was first to ask for one ... wishful thinking ;)

Yeah that makes sense. Just the way they try to make sales happen is scary. The SA even said “you help me with my sales target and I will help you to get the watch you want”.

·

No one has a crystal ball, but I would wager that in 12 months, the situation will be very different. Stick the money you planned to spend on the watch in a fixed deposit or some other absolutely safe investment, and in 12 months you might have a chance to buy the watch and use the interest for a beer or 2.  Or offset the price increase at the AD if that happens ...

·

It is annoying. I was told by an SA they get a Pelagos 39 every couple of weeks. Spoke to another SA in the same store a couple days later and she said they’ve been getting one every couple of days.
There are so many amazing watches available away from Rolex and mini Rolex. For example, I’ve just seen this in person and I fell in love

Boy am I glad, that I'am not really interested in hype pieces 🙏 I'd never play that stupid game.

For my case no, I just rather wait till the hype to cool down. Or if you plan to travel for a holiday, you might get lucky to get one in another country.

Tudor is starting to feel a bit like Rolex.  The Tudor shelf at our AD is literally empty. People are going for Tudors just because they couldn't buy Rolex.  But now it's not a matter of couldn't but its more of wouldn't.  As people start realizing how Tudors are slowly coming out with their own movements and is more affordable, its slowly hyping up.

But knowing Tudor, it won't be long.  I think this is just due to the fact that the Pelagos is quite new.  Give it a few months and they will be having them in the stores.

·

It will only stop when people stop placing orders with them and buy other stuff.

DAMN cool watch 👊🏼

Agree with you I don’t think the prices will drop or a surge of supply appear all of a sudden. I also agree that ADs use their position to leverage more sales. Personally I don’t like it but I understand why they would do that.
I just hope there would be more transparency. Like some sort of tier system and what watches are available in each tier.

Not everyone will like it but at least you’ll know where you stand.

·

Yeah I know implementing a system is unrealistic. But even on a case by case basis if your AD tells you exactly what you can realistically acquire based on your current standing. Rather than saying ‘Sure sir I’ll add you to the waitlist’ I’d prefer to be told ‘sorry but you can’t have that just yet. However this is what we can get for you..’.
Basically don’t waste each other’s time  If I know I can’t have that watch I’ll move onto something I can have and come back in the future.

·

It will end when people stop putting up with it.

·

Like others have said, at least the Tudor will eventually become available.

I have been on the wait list for a Rolex Pepsi GMT for more than 3 years at an AD where I have bought 2 non-Rolex watches before. My sales guy at the AD is pretty straightforward, good to talk to, and has never suggested or pushed me to buy more to improve my chances on the list (which speaks volumes about the amount of purchases you need to make to move the needle at least in image conscious (superficial) Southern California).

I was also interested in the Tudor Pepsi (maybe more interested because of its more vintage vibe) but thought they were equally unobtainable "wait list" type watches until they started showing up at the same AD. They didn't have it on bracelet but my AD assured me they are coming in and there was no list: he would call me when one came in and then it was first come first served (i,e, Tudors are not like Rolex). I have the Tudor GMT on bracelet now and it is great.

Tudor is learning the game from their big Bro. Wait and that watch will be around. Sad it happened and find a new AD This one isn't your friend . Why give them your money?
