Real beaters!

Slightly different.

So many snaps of great watches. But I want to see the ones you have in your collection that are banged up, dinged, scratched to hell etc, but somehow you just can't let go of them (for whatever reason)

Let's see the real beaters!

I have 2 Casios which are beat up pretty bad & I no longer wear. I just can't seem to get ride of them.

The F-91W's module is lifting from the cracked case and dust has gotten in under the screen. Both pushers on the left no longer work. I wore this watch for 5+ years as my ONLY watch.

The calculator was involved in an unfortunate accident involving spray adhesive when I was attaching a new headliner to a car. It hasn't been the same since.

Both batteries as still good and the time is still relatively accurate within a minute. I haven't adjusted either in about a year. Love both watches.

My Bulova Marine Star. Wore this watch everyday forv5 years. More scratches on the crystal than seen. Traveled from North America to Asia and back.

Cheers!

The only beat-up looking watch I have is this old Skagen that I wore for a few years every day about 2 decades ago…

If only the bezel and dial could talk, what stories they would tell!!

Behold!, my beloved work watch the CASIO B650WD-1AEF

I have never yet had to change the battery, it's around 5 years old,

It's the grab and go when plumbing, working on the car, anything labour intensive,

The lens is scratched and the silver coating has worn away to reveal the resin case base plastic in places, but it's still brilliant and everything still works!, stuff your G-shock I can see the time with this baby!

Far be it for me to raise this topic and not contribute.

Casio ProTrek - PRG-80 "Pathfinder"

Bought this around 2005/6. Felt like Bear Grylls at the time. Has been with me on multiple trips overseas as well as bashing around the backyard.

I've dropped this so many times, I've lost count. The scratch above "Adjust" and on the left sensor are testament to this. I've replaced the resin strap, as the first one perished. I've also had to do some maintenance on the battery.

Don't keep this one in the watch box, because it doesn't need to be!

That's when you know you've really "worn" it!

My beater is my casio mudman. I beat the crap out of it everyday. Rinse it under water and keep going.

Here is a G Shock I put through the wringer along with a Timex Iron Man. It was for a durability comparison. The Iron Man finally gave up the ghost, but this DW5600 is still working fine. Despite the crack in the crystal, it is also still at least splash proof.

This GWM5610 is my daily beater and has been for a number of years. Still working great!

I think for most collectors, when they think of "beater watch", your examples come to mind.

Though at this juncture I have the steel and titanium looking as close to new as a man without a workshop can manage, the Casio is the best I can do — used UV set Resin droplets to replace two of the face panel buttons. To be fair, that watch saw me through my teenage years. Best not to ask about its insides — there were a few battery changing incidents in my youth I shouldn’t talk about. I was a bit of a blunt instrument, and you can surprised what you can do with nail scissors and using two thin batteries instead of one the right size. It was not sensible, nor well informed, and the main thing is, it still works perfectly and with less damage than that sounds like. Just… not proud, y’know? (It also has a postcode I no longer live at and my signature poorly scratched into its back, but that will polish out if I choose. A necessary security precaution at the time, like etching your number plate into your car windows)

Man, you guys are hard on your watches!

Now that's real love for a watch. Can't get rid of it now. You've invested too much of your time and resources!

I don't baby most of my watches. Most of my polished watches are beginning to look brushed, and I have a bunch of plastic watches that are similar to the G-Shock.

They are tools. Beautiful, but tools.

Not the latest collab from the Dial Artist?!? 😂

Would implying it was increase the value? I need to go talk to an auction house

It's the maybemylastwatch/Seconde Seconde/Dial Artist/Bamford G-Shock.

There - I just 10x the value of your beater!

SUSFU303

Casio G-Shock G-314RC-9AV. My daily from 2006 to 2012, including Qatar, Iraq and Afghanistan deployments. I never wear it anymore, but it will always have a place in my watch box.

Just curious. Were than any restrictions on the types of watches you could have/wear, while on duty?

Whitesalmon

This Rangeman has been through hell and back. 9 years of constant abuse, 3 strap set replacements and still going.

Image

The Timex has been getting thrashed about since 1993. New battery and still does its job

Image

YES! I had a The Band strap on my Times for a long time... I think it was digital camo or something like that. It only lasted a couple years, on account of velcro and all, but it was super comfortable. Anyway, nice beater.

Scottro

My first beater bought as a beater. Wore the heck out of this painting houses, wrenching on cars, home repairs, and several cross country trips. It has a patina that reminds me of it all… especially painting

Image

This one was the first watch I bought that I considered a decent watch. I feel like this was kind of post Swatch for me. I wore this watch for years day in and day out. Went through a few bands.

Image

This was a watch I bought not as a beater but that could take a beating. This thing has seen more action at the range than anywhere else. It is light not uncomfortable but it sits high and the strap is typical hard G-Shock. I don’t like wearing this with long sleeves as much as other watches.

Image

This one here has the least wrist time as it is recent. I call it my truck watch. Similar concept as a truck gun. It just lives in the truck just in case I forget to wear a watch (it’s happened once) or if my activities change direction and call for something different on the wrist.

Great thread. 💯

Utilitarian, no nonsense. I like it!

Everything's a beater if you wear it enough. It's been to the tops of mountains, deep in the rainforest, swimming in the ocean, rolling around in the sand with the kids and mowing the lawn. It has been polished countless times and will be countless more.

Nope. That said, smart watches weren’t a thing while I was in. But they’d be a pretty stupid thing to wear in a combat zone I think. And like cell phones have been for forever, smart phones aren’t allowed/can’t be worn in certain secure areas. So some may wear them today, but not all can depending on their job.

Respect to anyone who can beat up a Roadster and be comfortable doing it. Puts things into perspective.

I'm reminded of the old Crown and Caliber video with @MarkHackman where he argues that your most expensive watch should be your everyday watch, not the watch that you wear every so often.

I'm not quite there myself but the sentiment is the right one. Also steel is a pretty hardy metal. It has the great virtue of repairability and polishing. And while I don't go out of my way to beat the crap out of my watches (and generally just take them off when I'm doing something that would almost necessarily end in damage), I do think we can be too precious about these things and it interferes with the memory making.

This resonates with me.

Also, I think it's much about the memories you create for others, as well as for yourself. I always remember my dad had a mid-eigthies, white gold Datejust and he never had the bracelet resized, so it just jangled up and down his wrist and forearm. When he was at work, he used to place the watch on a shelf, bracelet down. He wore that thing everywhere.

Objectively, G shocks are the best watches. I have others that I like more but there’s nothing like a G Shock.
