World's best loved beater review!

Hi Crunchers time to pay tribute to the Seiko SKX007 probably the world's best known automatic entry level diver, a watch that punches above its weight. Arguably the best known GADA automatic diver watch in the world too! Why?

It鈥檚 also probably the best value at any price point, in an automatic watch that fits all the criteria of the infamous ISO 6425, which specifies the criteria for a watch to be able to call itself a diver鈥檚 watch. The forerunner and DNA come from the iconic ref. 6105, which was produced until 1977 (and is famous among movie watch enthusiasts for having been on Martin Sheen鈥檚 wrist in聽Apocalypse Now).

Sadly the SKX007 was decommissioned in 2019 (it has no nickname probably because of the 007 James Bond numerical connection), now it has reached near cult status especially with Seiko fans.

It is a no nonsense self winding automatic which is made from a solid block of stainless steel and has a rock solid movement (hence the lineage from watches used by the army in Vietnam era).

Accuracy is stated as -20 to +40 seconds quite a wide range but accurate enough for almost everyone. Never been an issue after a week or so may need to adjust, set it 5 minutes fast and should be sorted.(Mine checked +18/20 seconds per day fine by me).

I bought mine in Asia its the Japanese version, the quality is supposed to be slightly better arguably (Mine is what they call a grey import bought in Hong Kong). To identify it's made in Japan as they put a J after the Ref. No. see above.

Seiko still produces a wide range of SKX Seiko 5 dive watches at around (correction much more expensive than they were, did see some at affordable prices not identical in look to skx007) shocked to see nearly 拢500 price tag for similar looking seiko there are similar looking ones cheaper but the SKX007 is the legendary iconic collectors version that is no longer made and has been known to sell at prices approaching US$1000 now!

A good looking watch with the trademark, off set winder, which makes it look smaller than its 42mm diameter when worn. It's white markers make it clearly visible even in murky water, the lollipop second hand provides a secondary backup reference point. The bezel has half second click points so it can easily be exactly aligned at 12 o'clock or desired point.

Ok here is a review courtesy of Hodinkee from a 9 year daily wearer of this GADA watch - Will put full review from Matt T. because I believe it says it all:-

"I received my SKX007 nine years ago. I have taken it everywhere I have been ever since then. My brother also wears his everywhere he goes. I am not a diver and neither is my brother. However I am a Firefighter and he is a Naval Officer, so we have done some durability tests to say the least. Mine has been on my wrist in every fire I have ever fought in my career, his around the world on Navy ships. Both have stood up to every challenge they have ever faced. In fact we tell everyone that asks that we feel this watch is the best value in a mechanical watch that there is today. The SKX007 is rugged enough to go anywhere, and handsome enough to be taken everywhere, and receive compliments everywhere too. I have been asked about it by people wearing Rolex, Panerai, Hublot, and a host of more expensive brands; nearly every time they say they will buy one too."

Be careful buying from eBay as nearly everything is being copied now. A new SKX is a safer bet, some very sexy versions available now at an affordable price. Must admit I own 3 different Seiko divers. Overall ticks so many boxes you have less excuses to buy another watch! Have a great day.

  • Probably best value GADA beater automatic diver watch
  • Legendary Iconic status
  • Looks good and is reliable in both casual/smart or work roles.
  • Stopped production of SKX007 in 2019
  • May not suit everyone's wrist (42mm)
  • Fully auto no hand wind or hacking (Does the job well regardless).

Ah the good old days when Seiko quality and price matched

Ah the good old days when Seiko quality and price matched

Some Seikos used to be a steal at the prices offered, they still reasonable value for money at entry level. They are not giving away Grand Seiko's but can't blame Seiko for that.

It was an iconic watch. I agree with you in not trusting eBay to by watches.

Amen to that! I love this watch. 馃敟

My all time favorite watch in my collection.

Sadly, became addicted to watches after the skx craze. Wish i would have gotten one during those years. Too all who did, don鈥檛 let them go! Those deals are long gone from Seiko 馃様

Love this watch. I wish I had gotten the 009 as well. 鉁岋笍

Jary, you are right when I double checked saw almost identical looking Seiko SKX007 (different model SKX) selling for around 拢500 (拢499.99 on the "a" site says skx007J wonder if genuine maybe old stock as says 2018 manfacture) I did see some other Seiko variants with same configuration but different colour scheme somewhere on web for around 拢225 can't find them now, looks like the days of cheap Seiko's are almost gone. If you want a GADA beater the Seiko SKX automatics are solid. It's not a Rolex but doesn't pretend to be one, funny that Rolex fans also buy them too, most guys like to have a few beater watches to fix car, go hiking, who knows even to go diving!

By far one of the greatest watches ever
