I think I am a collector now - how about you?

I have never seen myself as a watch collector. No, I seen myself as a curator, or a horder even, who buys what I like without to much thought about it. Over the the years, when the number of watches get bigger I start to see a pattern in some areas. For those who seen my posts know that one area is vintage dress watches primarily from 50s and 60s. Many of them Omegas. But even so, the pattern is the same. I just happen to like the design of these watches. I have not  collected specific references, movements or year of production. If I have seen something I really liked enough and could afford I just added the watch to the rest.

One of my first vintage watches was an Omega Suveran from 1944. This model have a history linked to Sweden, which I have mentioned in an earlier post. This year I have added another two of this reference. I now realize I have become a collector. Not in general but here I built a sub collection of a very specific reference and I know that I will try to add more of the same if it is in good condition and different enough from the others.

Do you find yourself to be a collector in any sub area which isn’t infinit. Like Dirty dozen, G-shock from every year of production, watches with Mickey Mouse on, or whatever topics there might be? Or, just like me in general, acumulating the watches you like nevermind a theme?

Oh, totally!

I used to collect comic books and was super proud of the fact that I had every issue of Amazing Spider-Man from #200 to #300 or some such.

And, then, when it came to watches, I immediately decided, "Okay, I now collect such-and-such brand."

At least I'm not a weirdo like these people...

Oh i dont think they are weird just enthusiastic  about something they love. 😂

·

I want a small functional collection. 2-4 watches maybe. Just stuff I'll exactly wear.

But I love so many that I might end up with 5 or 6.

I do want one of them to be a Pokemon watch. Maybe two of them. There are no good ones available so I just have to make my own.

Yes, why not. Snoopy and Mickey Mouse worked out well👍

·

Part of the process and completely natural as well.

·

I have a proletariat watch collection. If my watches ever achieve class consciousness I am in trouble.

·

I thought I was a collector and losing my mind and then I met fellow crunchers.. I feel safe now.. Money that I saved by not seeing a psychiatrist can used to buy a new watch.

·

It is self evolution.

To be a collector do you have to be somewhat discerning? I think my tastes are too.... eclectic... to be described as anything other than a magpie collecting shiny things. Not even 'nice' shiny things in some cases.

Case in point, I pick up my Polerouter, which I adore, and the rest of the WC community breaths a collective sigh of relief.... "Finally Deeperblue has developed some taste"

Image

But then I come across the Timex x Stranger Things watches, which are completely awesome!

Everyone is going nuts over the Bel Canto and yet these bad boys play the Stranger Things theme tune!!! But the watch world doesn't even bat an eyelid over them.

Then there is my other latest watch crush which I shared with @chronotriggered  recently and his response was "it looks like a dinner plate from a child’s kitchen set"... which I think was him being nice. He's not alone though... no one else in the watch community likes it either. If I decide to buy it I'll submit it to the ruthless evaluation of the community.

I don’t think you have to be discerning to be a collector. You just find a topic interesting enough. Could be anything really, also within watches. I think a key is that you should be able to grip the task. There should be a natural limit of options within the collection. I’m allround generally. This is my exception.

I kinda like it but just not enough to pay for it. Same goes for most watches.

But I'm the guy who wants a Pikachu watch. 😅

Do you have a theme that you decided to go for yet?

·

I truly appreciate military watches, specially ww2 watches, if I see one,I don't care about reference number or condition, I just buy it

·

I hope that explains it

There you go👍Nice!

·

I absolutely love you unversl geneve polerouter, I NEED ONE ❤️

·

I think you need one more Omega with a small second with Arabic numerals of course

·

Like you, I mostly just buy what I love. However, there is one subcategory that I seem to always gravitate toward: snail dial chronographs.

It's not super finite like your Omega collection, but it's far more defined than the rest of my collection.

P.S. Those three Omega's are lovely.
