I know I’m probably alone, but… Why the hype around G-Shock??

I‘m not knocking the watches or anyone who likes and wears them. I just don’t get why they are so hyped. Yes they are tough and can take a beating. But I mean you could wrap any watch in a thick layer of rubber/plastic and I’m sure they’ll manage just fine too.
Don’t get me wrong, the watches are fine, just don’t see the hype personally.

I don’t think there’s a hype I think most of us here do like GShocks that is all… no hype it’s great everyday watch!

·

I’m guessing same argument could be made about anything #Seiko as an example. That’s what makes this community great. We are all individuals with different lives, likes and dislikes. The common ground of watches is what we focus on

·

It's not hype, it's pure watch enthusiast respect and standard GShock wearer purposeful use and enjoyment. They will last forever (with battery changes every few years) and can take a total beating and survive. They are very affordable and do exactly what they are meant to do: tell the time and survival a nuclear holocaust. There's a reason Nico always ranks them as G-d Tier!

@Weremouse @jakaplan4  Yeah I have no problem with the watches or people liking them. It just sometimes feels like a hype to me, like they are revered well beyond what they are - a tough digital beater. But definitely everyone should enjoy and wear them as much as they want to!

I think a watch can both be great and overrated, and the G Shock fits that category.  They're great, I own 3 (assuming I can figure out where the hell I put that black one), but people often act like they're supernatural.

·

is it because of john mayer? lol

·

G-Shock is "hyped" not because influencers love them, but because EVERYONE else does.

When millions of people without a YT channel or a large IG following post their love for the brand & watches on a daily basis, it's not hype, it's genuine affection.

Tough, affordable, reliable. Hard not to love that combo.

This is exactly the point I’m trying to make 🤝🏼

That’s a fair point. As I said. I know I’m probably alone but I just don’t see what it is about g-shock that everyone loves so much. They are sturdy digital watches I just don’t see anything beyond that to laud.

And that's fine. If you can't find it, no harm to me or anyone else.

You do you, but don't hate on what others do.

(Just kidding of course. It's OK to be uncool 😜)

But they will do anything you need a watch to do, anywhere, anytime, forever. And that will cost you: next to nothing.

G-Shock is huge in many countries in Asia. Because you can say the same some say about Rolex: I want quality that lasts from a brand I know delivers.

·

I would agree some releases from GShock get hype and are priced higher just because they have a special edition design of some sort (even though the watch case in many cases is the exact same). But for the vast majority of the brand, they're just really good watches is all which leads to some idolizing them.

To be fair too however, on the technical side they did invent the standard for durability in digital watches. They're certainly not the only ones these days (honorable mention for Timex here). But when they came out they were pretty exotic. Even now not every digital beater will hold up the way a gshock does. For the common folk it may seem like hype, but all the professionals that use them actually use them for practical reasons, and they are the most popular. That is not hype, just a proven track record.

Nico is on another level, he's just a hardcore fan, and that is what enthusiasm in a hobby looks like.

Nah I don’t hate on anything I’m just trying to see if there’s something I’m missing. Like I said I don’t get it but I‘m not knocking anyone who does.

How can A G-Shock be overrated? Just because someone doesn't like it. What you get for the money is insane. I would have to sell both my house and family is it said "swiss made" on a so complex and solid watch.

For a lot of watch enthusiasts including myself Casio and in particular G-shock was their first cool watch that connects them to their early memories. It’s the genuine love for the watch that show up in every post from a lot of people. Even now after having expensive pieces in my collection, I still like to put on my Casio to remind me of my humble beginnings.

·

We're all here because we like wearing watches.

In the digital and ani-digi field, G-Shock makes a variety of watches to address different tastes and needs, and some people love and collect G-Shocks. Others love the mechanical watches they have in their collection, but don't want to damage them, so G-Shocks are the perfect beaters to have so we can keep wearing a watch when we do dirty or rough stuff that might damage our other watches - which is why so many Crunchers say that you need a G-shock in your collection. If digital just isn't your thing, perhaps an analog beater would be your thing? The Casio Duro, Timex Expeditions, Invicta Pro Divers, Orient divers, or Seiko 5s are all great inexpensive choices ... and they all have their own fan clubs 😀.

In comparison to your existing watches @WatchN, maybe one of the Hamilton Khaki Field watches could be your "beater watch" while still keeping things Swiss Made? Different strokes for different folks.

You’re good. I’ve been eyeing the Hamilton lineup for a while. Currently the SMP is the beater 😩

While a diver on a rubber strap can be a tough watch, I wouldn't want to ding the beautiful twisted lugs of your Omega.

·

I reckon the normal Casios are tough enough for most of us, without having to pay more for G Shock premium.

·

#gshock are great watches. I own 3 and love all of them. It has nothing to any hype. I just like them and appreciate their unique place in the watch space

·

It is not the hype for me. It's back to childhood. First watch Casio.

·

They're indestructible. Many members of the U.S. Armed Forces swear by them. They're just beasts.

·
WatchN

Yeah you’re right. I made this post to try to get it. But I still cant conform. Anyway as I said from the start - for those (millions) of people who do get it, enjoy them! I never meant this post to knock gshock or gshock collectors.

@JohnGalt I guess this reply goes to your comment as well. For me, I’ve realised I’m not Into the gshock aesthetic and digital doesn’t really do it for me either.

And thats perfectly fine, and i completely 100% understand. G-Shocks are usually Massive, chunky, clunky.. definately not for everyone.

This is why i am glad i joined though. I love to converse and learn others thoughts. And i will NEVER judge or go at someone for their likes and dislikes. I just like to chat and discuss.

·

I did not understand the hype of a $100 digital watch that happened to be a little bit tough either. Now I own one I've modified it I've repaired a couple other ones they're just fun! and I get it now. You'll get it too

·

The aesthetic appeal of any watch is a personal thing. I happen to like the look of certain G-Shock models (DW-5600, GA-100L, and the GA-2100 series). There are many that I do not like at all, though. Cost, and reputation provide additional reasons to like G-Shocks. They are not for everyone, but then what watch is?

·
brunofrankelli

Yeah, I never understood truck people. Or SUV folks for that matter. I like sedans and subcompacts. To my family I am weird.

SUVs are useful when you have a couple of kids in Tae Kwon Do like I do, and you need to haul them, all of their sparring gear, and an ice chest full of bottled water halfway across Texas and Louisiana to one tournament after another 😎

Makes sense. If you live stateside as you do, where the roads are wide enough and parking is a non-issue, getting an SUV is probably a no-brainer. I live in the Philippines where the roads are narrow and single lanes that are wide enough for trucks to squeeze through are often than not two-way streets. Parking is also very limited. People use the sidewalk as parking here. I should amend my comment with “I just don’t understand why people in this country would buy SUVs or trucks.”

Ah, yes. Totally different situation. I completely understand. 👍

Totally. Now that I think about it, if there’s one watch that’s fit for purpose here in the Philippines, it’s probably the GShock — humidity, dust, smog, rugged terrains, pickpockets, population so thick you forget the meaning of personal space—I think there is a large GShock community here, now that I think about it. But, for me at least, meh I’m passing.

I feel that G-Shocks have such a broad appeal and brand recognition (like Rolex), so watch influencers are very likely to target that wide audience. That's probably where the extra hype is coming from.
