Watches As Gifts

As we enter the Holiday season, my mind is drawn to gift giving and receiving. We all love watches and as such, likely receive a large number of watches as gifts. I have received 5 watches as gifts. So how many watches in your current collection have been received as gifts?

3 gifted. 1 from Work, the Ex Gf and of course mom

·

Over the years, >10, but I have 4 now that I can think of.

Some that weren't a big deal (for either party) got flipped.

·

These were all gifts from my wife.

My wife would not even know where to start in gifting me a watch, so that is a firm 0 for me.

I feel you man - dare to dream - but I do gift myself a lot haha

Never again. I gifted my brother a watch, the seiko 5 everyone bought until it was sold out everywhere, he didn't wear it because he considered it "too nice" and didn't want to get a scratch on it. Bought my wife an nixon like one she had a long time ago, but she asked me to return it as she wouldn't wear it.

Although, I gifted a seiko 5 to a cruncher so that's a story with a happy ending.

As far as getting watches as gifts, I got an Armani from my wife as an engagement present, doesn't run anymore but I still have it. And a watch friend gifted me my brew retromatic copper at a redbar meeting in NYC, John Ferrer presented it to me which was really cool.

I think it's fine as long as you know what the person you're gifting to wants, or what your friends / SO know what you want. People that know I'm into watches have been informed never to gift me watches, just cash to add to my watch piggy bank.

Zero. 😂🙈😩 Almost a dozen luxury watches and not a single one was a gift. Not even my Swatch Sistem51’s or other beater watches were given to me as gifts. I think the people in my life have a better shot at getting me watch accessories like winders, leather valet trays, watch boxes/rolls, watch stands, AIS Watch Cleaning Pens, etc...

Just one!  But - Of course getting a rare specific model needed prodding.  It meant calling her mom in Japan to go get one at a nearby Seiko dealer in Kobe, and then mailing it secretly to us last Christmas - so was kinda a surprise …but with a little push from me 😃

Oh man, now that I think of it at least 8! I have an Omega Seamaster Chronograph, Marathon GSAR,  Hamilton Mechanical,  Tutima Flieger Chronograph, Resco Patriot Gen 1, and Shinola quartz from my wife.

My son saved up as a child and gave me a GSHOCK Tough Solar I wear at some point every day. Most valued watch ever.

My Father in Law gave me an old Tissot Seastar before he passed

I have gifted many watches. I'm just sick like that. This year I gave a 20 plus year mentor a Marathon GSAR Artic (He gave my wife the hint I wanted one hence my recent marathon run of wearing my Marathon GSAR) I gifted a Grand Seik SBGA463 t a 30 plus year friend and a Rolex 36mmExplorer I to my daughter. I'm currently hiding a Rolex OP 36 pink dial for my wife's Birthday in 2023.

There's three or 4 guys I'm trying to get adopted by on WC ! LOL

I need an entire WC adopted parent family of many Step Dads ! Let's see, @JaeBust for watches and cars (both real and model ) no doubt. @WatchYourIntruder because his collection is unreal & growing every day! @HotWatchChick69 because I could wear a different Spring Drive masterpiece every day of the week! Plus it would be cool to ramp up watch auctions & do some monetary good with our watch addictions... This would be a great trio of Watch Dads to adopt me 😎

I have not been gifted any watches. I have only gifted one watch which was a Casio for my little sister as a birthday gift.

·

Gift watches are how I got back into this hobby. But now the sickness has taken root and I'm a lost cause.

·

I have 1 watch that was given to me in my stash. I really discourage people from buying me watches. Mainly because a gift watch = something to be treasured, a watch I buy myself = something I can use and if it breaks that's on me and me alone.

I do like buying watches for people. Both of my parents and gf have watches from me that they actually wear and use! I'm thinking of getting something for my sister who just got an apple watch. My line of thinking is that sometimes I don't want to wear some crazy thing on my wrist, I just want something that tells time, and on goes the mechanical seiko snk. And I often see people putting up post like, "I got sick of being connected all the time so i got a 'real' watch." I'm thinking a cool swatch or retro style casio would be good for her, but it has to take some punishment. Of course I like to think about this kind of thing anyway so it's fun for me.

I think it is hard to buy someone a gift of a hobby they are very into because their tastes are very particular (think about how much we complain about one extra line of dial text or a minute hand being just a tad too short). I don’t have gift watches still in my collection, but I do have some gift straps!

Now that you mention it, my interest really ramped up after being gifted watches as well.

FOR SURE! This is why it is important for our hinting skills to be honest to a razors edge

Zero but maybe one day. I did gift myself a Oris propilot on my 30th bday.

Most people who on this post happy for them that they gotten really good watch gift for Christmas. There has been someway somehow your close friends and family must of knew what you exactly like and that works well. Worst is getting a watch as a gift and what about its something you can't see yourself wearing it. But of course its a special gift we all have too accept that.
