What watch got you into watches?

In other words, what was your first grail watch or what watch caught your eye and really made you want to learn more? For me, as long as I can remember, I've always had a watch on my wrist, but I never knew the history, never knew what the world of watches was really like. Everything I saw were my grandfathers' Seikos and Timexes, my dad wore an Invicta, and everyone around me wanted G-Shocks. I was pretty clueless as to what else was out there. Patek Philippe's video of the development of the Grandmaster Chime was what really started my interest in watchmaking. But the Junghans Meister Chronoscope with the blue dial was the first watch that I said, "Ouu, I want that." What were the watches that sparked y'all's interest?

For me it was a vintage Favre Leuba. I still have not got one though. It is the 2nd oldest Swiss brand.

GD-120MB my first watch over 20 bucks, before this I was a one watch man, a sub 20 dollar Casio alll the time. Things got worse when this watch survived a couple of mosh pits.

·

This Casio melody I owned when I was in 7th grade was the first watch that really blew my mind. I’m entertaining the idea of buying another one for old time’s sake.

It was a 90's version of this.

The first time I strapped a quality watch to my wrist I was already partially hooked.

·

Oh, man. I remember how cool this watch was in 5th grade. Just can’t find one now. ☹️

A $40 Invicta Pro Diver with a Miyota movement 11 years ago. Found at a pawn shop. It was stainless steel and appealed to me because my skin would corrode the old plated zinc watches from the 60's and 70's. It's been a slide down the rabbit hole since. I removed the cyclops. It's been well worn. Still working.

This little Seiko 5, which I still own, I worked weekends at my fathers shop until I saved enough to but one. We're talking the late 1970's when I was around 14 years of age, yeah I'm that old.

An Alpha M video after I graduated high school. I almost fell into the fashion watch trap but thankfully, I found this community and steered myself clear!

No worry I bought a $150 Fossil, since then, I've built almost my entire collection staying under that price

Saw a Submariner, bought a SKX. That old story (I bet Im not the only one). 😅

·

Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope for me.

For me the Trigger for watch collecting was the speedmaster professional hesalite that I bought 10 years ago ( would post a wristshot but is currently OHing for the second time). And this one will stay in the collection till the end which is why only the warranty card is kept :)

Dad’s ’67 Explorer 1016 got me interested in watches as a young kid

So I started in my teens with quartz Seikos, Citizen Blue Angels and Casio Pathfinders.  But first ‘collection’ watch was about 20 years ago, it still lives on my desk, a gen 1 orange monster that still works great 🤘

For me, the first watch that I really wanted to buy is a Junghans Max Bill 38mm. At last I went for a budget alternative -- a Sternglas Asthet in white. But I did move on and got myself a pre-owned Max Bill Chronoscope

(Just a stock image of the Asthet found on the Sternglas website)

Truth be told it was James Bond specifically his original tie-in with Omega some 20 years ago. So I bought a Seamaster Professional Chronograph loved that watch at the time, alas it is long since gone.

I have been wearing watches since I could remember long time ago in primary school. I never really gave them much thought or attention. They were just basically a tool to tell the time. Have been wearing watches from cheap quartz or digital battery powered pieces and later on automatics. But they still remained just tools to tell time. I never had more than 1 watch at a time. I only bought a new one if the previous has reached the end of its useful life.

It all started in 2020 when I bought my LE Seiko Sumo. Was impressed by its specs, build and finishing. Started watching YT videos to learn more about the watch from reviews. That was when I was led to watch reviews of other watches. Got more impressed with higher specs of other watches over that of my Sumo. That was when my full attention and desire was monopolized by the Tudor Pelagos LHD. Sadly (or happily) it never stopped from there. Since I got a great deal for a slightly used LHD I have been on the lookout for similar deals eversince.

Possibly touchy subject but this was on my wrist during my 20s:

No no, not the Cartier version, but a Chinese version of it complete with a cabochon that fell off.

I mean I'll probably never own the actual gold version, but it's be cool to own one of the SS versions one day.

·

While I have worn a watch every day since I was 6 I wouldn't say I was into watches until 4 years ago. After 25 years of moving from quartz shitter to shitter every time a battery ran dead I tried an apple watch. It was my dissatisfaction with the apple watch that sparked an interest in mechanical watches.

Almost similar to yours, when I started looking into watches this is the one I kept going back to, the Max Bill Chronoscope.

But I might have a thing with the grail concept, sort of a don’t meet your hero’s kinda thing. I get the idea in my head that if I finally get and wear this I’ll quickly fall out of love with it for some inexplicable reason. Then I’ll have wasted a hunt and chase effort. I dunno.

For now, my ”Grail” is a moving target and I allow myself to be easily amazed with almost anything innovative or unbeknownst to me.

Current grail: Ressence Type 3BBB

Ive been wanting to buy a Rolex submariner since the hulk came out but seriously for the past 5 years its never been the correct time or moment. The other day I bought a Glashütte Original SeaQ in green, amazing watch. While at the AD I enquired to buy the submariner and put in an order, they let me try one that they had in the back but not in green. Since then I've been thinking on cancelling the order, I don't know why but I think its not the right watch for me!

Therefore I think im having your same problem with the grail concept! :) Ill have to wait and see the submariner to be sure!

Getting it on the wrist in the metal is the determining factor. Gotta see it to believe your own hype or arrive at your senses.

Very similar story to me too. Always had a watch on. Gramps had Timex, and Dad had Seikos but I never really paid attention. My first grail was an Oris Aquis, and I have been a watch obsessive for a few years now.
