Looking to buy a dress watch but have a small wrist and a small budget. Any recommendations?

Hi, I'm just getting into watches and I want to get a more formal watch. The thing is my wrist is only 5.8in circumference. For reference I currently have a 37mm Citizen Chandler and that's about the upper limit.

Any recommendations, first or second hand would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: my specific budget is ~£200 but I'd like to save money where I can

The Hamilton Jazzmaster makes nice dress watches. If you are open to quartz, you will find more 36mm watches, both Hamilton and other brands.

The jazzmaster isn't a line I had previously considered, so thank you for recommending them!

You might think about the 34mm hand wind Timex Marlin.

Image

It is a faithful reissue of the Marlin from the '60s.

Image

Another option would be to look into a vintage dress watch.

This 1968 Dateline was less than a new Marlin.

38mm Orient Bambino?

You can’t go wrong with the Orient Bambino.

·

Vintage!

·

Timex Marlin is a great choice.

·

Vintage anything. The world is your oyster if you are comfortable with a 35 mm which was once the "standard" men's size watch.

·

Marlin was my first answer as well, although be sure it's the 34mm hand wind and not that other version.

If you can get your hands on this, it probably doesn't get cheaper without getting really dicey.

If you don't mind quartz, a Seiko tank might be a good choice since you said you were on a budget. They are really nice and not that expensive. The smaller Bambino suggestion is also a good one.

·

Ooh ooh ooh, are you daring enough to pick up an HMT Janata or Kohinoor off Ebay?

·

Rectangular watches use to be smaller and perfect as dress watches...

Image

But that one cost about 45.000 euro, so these for about 350 may be better...

And these Oupai Ceramic from China cost only 60 euro!

38mm Orient Bambino?

completely agree you'll get an aromatic movement and many color and style options with all the generations.

If you don't mind a bit of quirk, and don't mind plastic...

May I interest you with a 34mm Timex Marlin for $200, or a Hamilton Boulton Quartz for $695?

Image
·

It might be a little too big but if you want a pure dress watch, no seconds hand then maybe this Escapement Time Breguet Classique might be a good should. It's 38.5mm

Image
·

It’s allegedly a field watch, but it fits the dress category better in my opinion. The Glycine Combat 6 36mm.

·

Timex Marlin 34mm hand-wound, Seiko tank homages... I'm fairly sure both of them got already mentioned numerous times in this thread.

If you want something "mainstream respectable" (instead of merely "watch nerd respectable ;), you might also want to look into small, vintage quartz Omega, preferably two handers. Found this on Chrono24 within two minutes of fine-tuning the filters. Sub-400 bucks.

Vintage Seamaster.

35mm Orient Bambino (labelled as ladies watch)

Any Nomos manual wind (expensive but wow good)

Junghans Max Bill Manual wind 34mm

·

A small Hamilton Boulton

38mm Orient Bambino?

Yes - this one looks simple and elegant. +1

Orient but I can’t remember the model: but this is another one that caught my fancy: dressy & unpretentious. Paid about $300 from a local AD.

·

I suggest to go vintage, so much choice in small watches for a small price......here is my 34 mm Tissot from the 60ies....paid it 62 euros (+/- 6 years ago) on Ebay

Here is a bit of quirk with an all stainless steel case; the Armitron Ridgemont. 😉

Orient TriStar and Seiko 5 are good starting points. It may be well worth your time to look through some of Casio's lineup. The MTP is really good, but comes in at 41mm. Their ladies watches also look quite good, with one or two rectangular cases available if that's your thing.

·

Slight wildcard - Casio LTP-V00 range...tank style dress watch for £50ish. It's listed as a ladies watch but check out some real-life wrist shots before dismissing it outright.

38mm Orient Bambino?

I've been looking for that but can't find it anywhere. Sad because you're right it's a must buy.

·

Uzed Tissot PRX 35mm quartz or 34mm Timex Marlin.

·

As mentioned by others, Marlin 34mm. But be mindful though that even if this is 34mm, it may wear slightly larger since there's almost no bezel -- it's all dial.

Having said that, I second @Guyllheaume in getting any from the SNKL4x series. Here's my SNKL41, and I have a 6.25-inch wrist...
