My Perfect Dress Watch

For the longest time I thought the JLC Reverso was my ideal dress watch. For folks following my journey of the perfect (for me) Land, Sea, Air core watch collection you'll remember that my Navitimer serves as the "Air" watch in this trio.

Well, I tried on the JLC Reverso and no magical sparks were sent flying sadly. The dress watch would serve as the "Land" watch and I figured it could in some twisted way tie into the whole "polo players (which are land-based) need a way to protect the watch crystal" approach. Anyways. A recent 15 year anniversary celebratory trip to London led to some inevitable watch browsing, and I stepped into a Cartier boutique where I tried on the Tank Must in Large and XL sizes. Based on the photo I included, you can guess what happened next (except I bought it back home and not from the Cartier London boutique)

It's gorgeous, it's beautiful, it makes me stare at the running seconds hand for no other reason other than just to admire it. And so watch #2 of 3 total has joined the collection! Air and Land sorted. Sea is next, but that one is a bit more pricey haha!

I'll be working on a review of the Cartier Tank Must XL for my YouTube channel "The Timist" and of course you'll be seeing more and more shots and clips of it on my IG "The_Timist_IG" but in the interim, please excuse me as I return back to my intense staring of the running seconds hand 😂

Not my cup of tea, but a lot of people love this watch. I had the opposite reaction. I tried on the Reverso and the Tank the same day from an AD that sold both. I hated the Tank and loved the Reverso small seconds in silver with the guilloche dial. I subsequently tried on a bunch of other rectangular models from other brands (Longines, Oris, Baume et Mercier) and couldn't like any of them after trying that Reverso.

Your story demonstrates why it so important to try on watches before buying. Sometimes our minds change when we get the watches on the wrist. Pictures and online content is no substitute for trying these luxury timepieces on.

Oh without a doubt! To your point, photos/videos online prime us in one way, and reality can confirm or completely shatter that perception once the timepiece is on the wrist!

Case in point, the "Sea" watch in my 3 core watch collection is the Rolex Sea Dweller 43...but initially I thought it was going to be the Submariner 41. I tried both on, and the Sub felt small and too flat. That is not at all the sentiment I had built up in my head while researching the timepiece online.

Downside to all of this is, in a world where purchasing remote is becoming more and more a common theme, and with not everyone living in a large metropolitan area that actually HAS authorized dealer locations to even allow for trying on watches, healthy return policies have to be put in place.

Well, when you have "a type" you have a type 😀 what diver did you end up getting?

And yes, dress watch, rectangular in design, lots of horological significance, I was like "yes, the Reverso, it's the watchmaker's watchmaker, it'll definitely be THE ONE" that all went out the window in-person. I literally can't stop staring at the Tank. So happy to have added it to my collection!

Thanks so much! Yours suits you well 👍

I'm about 10 seconds away from starting my watch strap hunt - any good ones you'd recommend?

23mm is a tough size but I’ve liked the Barton leather straps thus far.  Particularly at 23mm, it fits nice and snug with easy quick change spring bars.  Picked up the forest green and grey colors so far.

#cartier has a piece for each point in the collection.  It may not be certified diver, but it will be fine for everyday use.
