Advice on owning a collectible long term

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help.

I own and love my Black Bay Heritage 41mm ETA.

The thickness is fine but I am thinking the Black Bay 54 will be better suited for my 6.5โ€ wrist.

Does anyone been in the same predicament and regret selling a future collectible?

So should I keep my Black Bay Smiley long term or choose something better fitting my wrist?

Well, I suppose it depends on whether your primarily concern is future resale value, or daily wear.

Personally, Iโ€™d go for something that fits your wrist and is comfortable to wear. But thatโ€™s just me. I think it depends on what the purpose of the watch is for you.

I think we should always try to buy watches we love. Similarly, we should only get rid of watches we own if we fall out of love with them. Go try on the BB 54 and see if it makes your heart flutter. These are very similar watches you are talking about, so it is hard for me to imagine the BB54 will move you significantly more than the Heritage 41.

That's pretty much exactly what I was going to type.

I'm of the mind that watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed, not tucked away hoping they increase in value some day.

I'd suggest trying on the BB54 before committing to anything though, no point selling the BB41 then realizing the BB54 just doesn't feel right.

@Tourbillon1916 yeh I'm not in it to resell but enjoy the glory of owning a rare collectible.

Thanks guys, it helped me realise I'm just not wearing my Tudor 41 enough that I forget the beauty of it.

I've been loving my Tudor Tiger with it's smaller case so it's probably what made my thoughts sway to the Black Bay 54. Like Randy mention, I think the Black Bay 54 won't move me as much as my BB41.

It depends on why you have watches. If you are collecting them as objet d'art and/or an investment, then that would lead you more towards hanging onto it. It's a nice thing. Having said that, I would also comment that, while collectable, I don't think it's going to be worth oodles more money anytime soon, though.

But if you have watches because you wear them on a daily basis, then it's a no-brainer to have a watch that suits you best. It seems silly, to my mind, to walk around saying, "Yeah, this watch doesn't suit me, but it might be a collectable one day!" Again, it all depends on why you have watches in the first place.

Yeh the challenge was experiencing the smaller 40mm case of my Tudor Tiger and thinking I need to swap.

I'm going to keep the BB41 and enjoy it

If it makes you happy when you wear it, that sounds like a great idea!

BB54 and keep your Heritage 41. One day you may well end up keeping the 41 over the 54 , maybe , maybe not . If you donโ€™t absolutely need to offload the bigger watch , then donโ€™t. You may feel like a big watch day , one day , and a small watch day on another day ?

ยท

When faced with dilemmas like yours I try to think of the sunk cost fallacy: If you had the value of your BB 41 mm, cash in hand, would you go out and rebuy the same watch or would you buy the BB 54. If the latter is the case I would strongly consider getting rid of the BB 41.

I love this response. In my mental lab I had an internal voice to keep small watch collection. But you're right! Some days you want to wear a nice big watch!

Iโ€™m in a similar boat. I got a great deal on the new Speedy last November and as a space need also, I always thought it was my one and done watch. But then itโ€™s always on to the next watch and Iโ€™m seriously contemplating selling/trading in my speedy for an Explorer. Iโ€™ll probably post a poll soon to ask for help also. Not sure what to do.

The 41mm Black Bay you have is the most collectable (black dial ETA version on a bracelet), as it was made for the shortest amount of time. I wouldn't sell it or if you do make sure you know what it's worth. In the UK these go for ยฃ5,000 or more

I have a similar problem with my longines spirit 40mm. The 37mm would fit way better, but it was not available when I bought mine. Selling the 40mm? No way! I am too attached emotionally to THAT watch. And the fast strap/bracelet exchange system is awesome (only for the 40/42mm). So the question is: are your pains with the watch bigger than your emotional attachment? If yes, sell it for the 54.

For long term investment, It depends on how many 54 will be sold and how many will survive (scarcity). I think, they will sell tonns of them... Shortterm the 54 will have a higher value (the secondhand market will be smaller in the begining, so higher prices), longterm go for the 41mm

BUT if its not just about the value, you have to think: which watch will be more "sellable"? There is no point in a watch with a high "value", when you can not sell it at the right value in a (for you relevant) timeframe

That's a tough one, I say get both if possible ๐Ÿคฃ my combo will be a broad arrow speedy and pole dial Explorer 2

This watch-collecting game can be tough on the mind!

I would go and try the 54 on before selling a nice watch like The BB.

ยท

Why not keep the BB41 and save up for the BB54?

Hell of a watch
