White Elephant Watches?

I need a couple of White Elephant Game Xmas gifts; of course I do a watch every year. Normally I do inexpensive Russian watches; but due to the influence of this group, I've broadened my choices. I am leaning towards the Casio Duro this year.

cant go wrong with the duro, this is a gift from my friend. and im happy with it

Some iconic movie watch might also be fun as a gift
For example the Casio CA53W-1 ($30) calculator watch worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future

Or one of the Casio's worn by Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible, here the iconic DW290-1V ($55)

Wasn't thinking G Shock but a great choice or the Duro = both awesome. A solar GSHOCK is always cool for non watch addicts: low maintenance,  tough, water resistant and never needs a battery

Perhaps this Alba solar fieldwatch. You can pick these up on ebay for just above $50. Alba is a subbrand of Seiko, as you probably know...

·

That Casio Duro looks way more expensive that it it 🎯-  looks impressive for white elephant, I think.

(Boo on all things Russia - starting a land war in Europe and daily atrocities rules out that option.)

·

The duro is hard to beat but you can probably find a Lorus field watch sub $50.

And a titanium version sub 80

I love Vostoks, but I won’t buy a new one now, esp if it was made after after February.  Duro all day for that very reason

I only know about this watch from being a member of this group!  I've got my hand on the trigger, and I am ready to pull it.

I'm looking this up now for availability, thanks for suggesting bc I would not have thought of it!  Despite the fact that I had one of those original 1980's calculator watches, yes the one from the movies!

How can a private watchmaker be blamed for bloody crimes of a certain group of people in Russian government?

I agree, it is an issue but then again can we truly blame the people of Russia?  I've already pretty much decided not to by a Russian this year for the White Elephants.

I've had a Duro for a few years now, and it's my go-to for the beach and concerts! Though in my opinion, the stock strap leaves a lot to be desired. For me, the rubber made it in the trash can before it hit my wrist. Might be worth including a low-cost nylon or elastic strap with it.

Thanks!  I can do that, in fact I probably have that in stock!

The Duro is great, but might be big for some. I also like the idea of a classic Casio like the CA53 or A168 that anyone could wear.

I saw this lovely piece of horological significance at CVS...

Please don’t buy Russian watches, there are too many beautiful things to look at except for those

This thread describes 90% of my collection 😜

The #lorus #lumibrite is a solid option, but the stock grey strap is a single pass and falls apart if you look at it wrong (which is a shame because the watch itself will probably work forever with the occasional battery change.

The #casio #duro - only reminds me I haven't worn mine in positively ages!

The #alba are poor imitations, even if they are poor imitations of their #seiko big brothers.

#vostok - too many opportunities for political conversations which never go well at this time of year (even if they would be my choice).

Casio #calculatorwatch - I like that idea.

Additionally, JC Penny is having a Casio sale in the run up to Christmas. You could do worse than a Casio W218hc-8av at the Office secret Santa, and it's less than USD15.00!

Should we not buy German cars because of what Hitler did, or wear Italian clothes because of the Romans. I am pretty sure the people who work at Vostok have had no influence on the war

Let's not make it political. And it's up to everyone personally to decide. This platform is about watches. I'll repeat, they are not beautiful. and that's my opinion.

Quite sure, that if you want to make a political statement, you can go to the nearest bar/Facebook

Simple answer:  The West's strategy for dealing with the Russians at present is economic sanctions.  By purchasing goods from Russia right now, you are undermining one part of the defensive strategy in an active, ongoing conflict.

There's a substantial difference between that and purchasing goods from companies/countries whose personnel/governments have significantly changed from those in the past and are not actively engaged in an ongoing conflict.

I you want to create new watch nerd get a snkl45 or snkl41

Thanks for that, so if I don't buy a $70 Vostok Ukraine will win the war. Cheers

It's not the purchase of one watch or lack thereof that makes the difference.  It's a cumulative strategy -- if everyone takes the same position and refuses to buy Russian products, then yes, the Russian economy WILL suffer.  But every individual purchase of a Russian product does harm the overall strategy.

Thanks for all the fantabulous feedback, this is a really great group and excellent resource for collectors and enthusiasts at all levels.  Well, I ordered 2 Casio Duros this afternoon for the 2 white elephant gifts.....lets see what happens!

I appreciate this comment here! Watches have participated in many wars over many decades. I’ve never heard of a watch, starting, or being the cause of war. If you are seven inclined, go on the eBay purchase some from Ukraine. Now you can have sweet, watch and help those folks out.
