Would you take the trade?

I was dining at a restaurant recently with my wife, when I noticed the waiter checking out my Speedmaster. Eventually we chatted briefly about it and I noticed he had on the Grand Seiko Cherry Blossom SBGA413. He went on to serve some other tables but then he circled back and whispered under his breath, “would you trade your Speedmaster for my Grand Seiko?” I do love the Cherry Blossom and would love to own one eventually. And I actually thought it would be a fair trade. But my Speedy was my first big watch buy and I love it too much. So I declined. How about you? Would you have taken the trade?

It's like in the 70's, how a bunch of couples would show up to a friend's house, and everyone would put their car keys into a big punch bowl!  What could go wrong?

As I always say, variety is the spice of life!

Good analogy!!

Yep.  If you don't like it you can always sell it and get another Speedmaster.

·

A Speedy is gonna be my one watch of over $5K, hell maybe above $1K; so no way I make that trade.

I’m with you @UnholiestJedi. I saved about 1 1/2 years and forwent many other watch purchases to finally get my Speedy. It wasn’t the first one in my collection but probably would be my last one out. I plan to give it to my daughter when she turns 18.

Very different watches, but two of my general favorites. I wouldn’t trade away what was on my wrist, so I voted ’no’, but I have a Speedy Moonphase and a GS Winter, so maybe I’m disqualified 🥴?

My wife would pick the key from of crappier car than the one we came in.

Two great watches! The Speedy Moonphase is a sleeper hit. And the GS Winter is the GS I want the most! sounds like you have a great collection.

No chance, not because it's not a fair trade. But that really doesn't matter.

That speedy, you obessed over, sacrificed for, forgot other things to finally obtain it. It means something to you, everytime you put it on your know what your hard work achieves and you smile. When people smile at it, it probably makes you have a small grin, but imagine everytime you see Grand Sieko and you just think about your speedy, or when someone asks you about it and you say you traded you speedy for it with a waiter over lunch....

Nope not a chance, keeping your speedy was the right call

Ummm...  you do know the wider cultural reference, yeah?

I don't think there are any watches in the same price range for which I would trade my Speedy (1861). Aside from being a Speedmaster and having iconic status and all the mythology around it, I think it's objectively great value for money.

·

I want to say yes but I’m not a Speed-master person, but I do own 2 Grand Seikos.  So this scenario would likely never present itself to me.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head! The Speedy always brings me a smile and I worked so hard for it. I totally appreciate your post.

My joke about my wife getting the keys to a worse car came from my memory of an episode of "Love American Style" (dating myself) where a young naïve couple go to a swingers party in an old truck not realizing what is going on and then the hot young wife pulls the keys for a sports car out of the bowl and leaves with her husband and the car and the men are left in disbelief that she left with her husband.

Well said and I couldn’t agree more!! 🔥🔥

I have already traded my Speedy so I guess I might be open to this trade depending on how much I liked the GS in person.

I thought you would say “wife” but let’s go with keys …

Not a speedy fan though so if the waiter come up to me and say Love your Seiko 5 gmt want to trade for the cherry blossom…I’ll tell him I have three and give him all three 😂

I am not sure if I feel comfortable trading with a random waiter. Both are great watches in different categories and I don’t see how one can replace the other haha. You will end up getting both. Or itch getting another speedy after the honeymoon period with the GS.
Disclaimer: I have both speedy 3861 and SBGA415. 😬

Ah! Since you’ve got both you are in a good position to answer: if you could keep only one, which would it be? (and I agree that the random waiter factor did weigh in on my decision).

tough decision. I would keep speedy because today is Tuesday. 😂 All kidding aside, speedy is more versatile and can be dressed up/down. GS is more dressy and elegant, especially if you go for the pink dial Spring.  It really depends on what you already have in your collection.

That makes sense to me. I too think Speedy is more versatile. Enjoy them both!

Traded it towards a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe.

·

Not sure if I would or not, but that is definitely not a bad offer.

·

I'm not that kind of watch collector/enthusiast!  I don't just trade watches with the first GS owner that whispers in my ear.  I have to get to know your collection first.  😄

Too sketchy for me.  I'd trade with a friend or fellow collectors that I've known for some time.

·

Could never trade a watch like this with a waiter or someone I knew quite well. Just not going to happen.

Especially a Speedy for a shiny Seiko. Although I have my eye on an SBGN003 GS so I do enjoy a shiny Seiko myself. Just not more than an Omega.

·

I have both — the Omega Speedy 3861 (Sapphire) and the GS SBGA413 “Cherry Blossom”.  I wouldn’t trade the Speedy over the GS, but I would definitely recommend to add the SBGA413 in your collection.  The SBGA413 totally gives a whole new experience over the Speedy — the Spring Drive movement, the dial (which is a work of art in itself), and the high intensity titanium case and bracelet (super lightweight!).  These two watches compliment each other, in my humble opinion.

Thanks! I appreciate your view. Yes, I’d love to add that or the winter to my collection. I’ve seen them both in the metal and photos just don’t do them justice.
