What sort of leather watch straps are good?

Hello fellow watchcrunchers,

I am thinking about getting a couple leather straps for my seiko cocktail. The seiko cocktail came with a rather comfortable calf leather bracelet, in my country they either sell the crappy cheap leather or expensive (100 bucks or more) hand crafted straps from wild game or other animal leather. Is it worth ?

I only buy Horween Chromexcel leather straps now. Love the comfort, the way they look and age.

How much do they cost? Because I can find a leather jacket out of wild game for 200$ and a leather strap out of some other creature for 150$ which just sounds insane

A nice leather strap is totally worth it 👍😊

Horween is always good

But you can also look for some Italian leathers like Badalassi Carlo or an equivalent.

I find it difficult to assess colour and quality online, so if you have the opportunity, I would go to a store that sells some known brands like Hirsch. They might be a bit overpriced but it’s the best way to be sure you get something you like.

I have also had good experiences with Etsy, just be sure to check out the reviews and decide for yourself if you trust the seller.

"Genuine leather" is the lowest, and often reconstituted, leather. It's the crap that flakes and disintegrates. Avoiding that gets you into somewhat decent quality.

Some useful info on leather can be found here

As always, you get what you pay for & what something is worth is what people are willing to pay for the thing.

Yes I have heard that genuine leather is utter garbage, I just wonder like what is the price of a good strap to see what I'm aiming for or it depends on the country

House of Straps sells great Horween leather.  You can pick the leather, the stitching, etc and get exactly what you want.  I just had them make a Cordovan Horween strap and it's as good as they come.

Di Modell, Rios 1931, Fluco, and others make excellent straps from about 25 dollars/euros/pounds and up. That includes calf leather, shell cordovan, and sustainable exotics. Then there's sailcloth, caoutchouc, suede, canvas, Nato, milanese.... You can spend a hundred or more on one strap if you want, but it'd be more fun to buy a few different straps and mix up the styles and colours - it's surprising how much it changes a familiar watch into something completely new.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the bottom shelf "genuine leather" straps! Some genuine leather straps can be "upgraded" simply by applying a leather conditioner, like Chamberlain's Leather Milk.

If the leather surface easily absorbs the conditioner, then you can turn it into a pretty decent strap! The leather conditioner will moisturize the leather, giving it a softer and more supple texture. This will also protect it from drying out, thus prolonging the strap's life.

However if the conditioner just slides around the surface, then it might just be faux leather, or something with a printed pattern. This type of material will inevitably chip and crack very easily.

I have to admit, the genuine leather strap i got with my phoibos watch was actually pretty decent. Will try the trick with it
