High Horology meaning 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔😳?!

The term High Horology gets loosely thrown around here and there😅☺️😁.

First and foremost, I would like to present a definition of High Horology that will resonate with everyone in at least a certain aspect. Being openminded and mindfull is key when sharing in this very special hobby that we all hold dear 😀👍.

The definition has been put together by gathering important points that various others have expressed in the past. It summarizes and breaks out into 3 categories:

  1. The creativity and ingeniring aspect = Technical prowess

2. The use of precious components = Luxury

3. The finishing to a high standard = Traditional hand finishing by an artisan watchmaker

I will venture into saying that we can mostly all agree that the merging of the 3 points mentioned above consists of High Horology.

Now, can one of these factors be isolated and still be considered High Horology? Wich is more important to you when considering buying a timepiece? Do you look for a certain equilibrium when assessing a watch before making a purchase decision?

Your most welcomed to share your view point 😉.

Haute Horology, at least in my mind, is the Holy Trinity of watches:

Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin

Their creations are indeed Haute Horlogerie, they meet the 3 point criteria. There are others that are creating on parr pieces, if not more, that stand next and against those three horological titans as well 👌😀.

Absolutely, the first two I feel could join the big three:

JLC

Parmigiani

i would actually prefer many of their watches to anything AP makes.

and that isn’t taking into consideration the numerous high-end independent watchmakers.

Yes 😀! Independant Artisan Watchmakers are truly in an ancient league of their own. They work so meticulously with passion and dedication.

Now that you have mentioned JLC, it's worth noting that the original Royal Oak was powered by a JLC movement, one that was later used by al three; AP, PP and VC. It's the caliber 2021 based on the 2020 that was designed by JLC, their own caliber 920. The members of the Trinity funded JLC for the project, that is why they all got to use it and modify it to their needs and standards 👍😃. That's why JLC got the well deserved a.k.a "The watchmakers of watchmakers" 🙌!

A. Lange & Söhne would certainly be considered High Horology.

And I agree that the term really embodies the three attributes you mentioned - luxury, craftsmanship and technical mastery.

It's great you mentioned them, Lange is a great example of High Horology 👍. One of my all time favorite chronographs is the A. Lange & Söhne 1815. That calibre L951.5 is truly breath taking 🤯💥💯🔥!

I'm honestly not sure, but it feels like there must be something missing from your definition... Or maybe it's a question of degrees.

Just for sake of argument, consider a Grand Seiko in precious metal with a Spring Drive movement. Certainly, that checks all three boxes. Does that make it "high horology"?

"High horology" to me seems to include the idea of taking hand finishing to an extreme degree. To really demonstrate virtuosity.

I like the way you emphasize hand finishing to an "extreme degree" and compliment the definition by adding "to really demostrate virtuosity". Very well put 👍👌.
