Longines Master Collection or NOMOS?

Hello! I'm having a really hard time trying to decide which watch I should get for my birthday. It has been a long journey with many discontinued models and out-of-stock models, but here are the 2 candidates that made into the last round:

  • Longines Master Collection L2.909.4.78.3 (moonphase)
  • NOMOS Tangente Date Power Reserve (Reference 131)

I have always wanted a moonphase watch, and Longines is a brand that has a rich heritage. The price is also reasonable. I do find the font of the numbers a bit, let's say, old-fashioned. If they change the Longines 1832 moonphase dial color to white, I would immediately grab one. But Master Collection is what we have for now.

I learned about NOMOS when I was researching Junghans and Bauhaus design. Tangente Date Power Reserve seems to be a classic, and I just love the design. It is more expensive than the Longines, but I do enjoy the feeling of wearing an expensive watch that looks deceptively simple.

Which one would you choose? What other factors should I consider?

Longines L2.909.4.78.3. I can never understand why photos on their website look so much worse than the actual watches.

I like the Nomos as I think it has a unique look. Also for me moonphases are cool but a pain to set

·

I’m all in for the Longines. I was actually looking at one a couple days ago. from the dial texture to the font of the numerals and the basic proportions I think it surpasses the Nomos is every way if you ask me.

·

On looks alone I'd go for the longines, gorgeous. A nice that's all I'll say as I know very little about each watch, but the longines is a cracker.

·

Oh dammit, that's the one where they did a neat little power reserve indicator but they couldn't be bothered to center it. I utterly despise NoMos. At least they did a decent date window, I guess. Bauhaus is the worst. Anyway, my choice is obvious, but the Longines would be a total win if the case were a tad less bloated. Oh, I vote for the Longines, but more importantly against NoMos.

·

I like Bauhaus styling, but Nomos watches leave me cold. Of those two I'd pick the Longines, but I'd be more likely to go with a Junghans Form A, or Max Bill than either.

The dial texture is actually nice when you see the actual watch! Initially I thought it was ugly when I saw the picture on their website.

I was also looking at Junghans Meister Kalendar Moon but the white dial + golden hands version disappeared from their website... Not sure if they discontinued it or not.

I love and vote for that Longines Moonphase.  In my shortlist (of about 20-25 watches)😉

·

Nomos 100% my pick

For a moment I thought this is the JLC Ultra Thin Moon...

They do have the heritage in a white face. On my list to get someday!

Although the Longines looks great, it feels elderly to me (and it is not even two-tone). I'd go with the fresh Nomos.

·

I love both brands (and I did recently order the standard Tangente), but this particular model seems crazy expensive for what you're getting. An extra 1000EUR for a couple of complications that are not executed very well IMO. I prefer the clean looks of the standard Tangente (and the Orion as well).

My wife has a Longines from the Master Collection and I was really impressed by the quality at this price point - I don't think Longines have much competition in 2-3k segment. This particular model looks stunning to me, but it feels a bit more formal/dressy to me. Depends on what you're looking for.

This is a design preference. Whichever design you prefer is correct.

Is this L4.826.4.92.2? The dial color is beige according to the website...

Longines, all the way. It's great bang for the buck, features a great movement - the moonphase is crown-set, no pusher to press with a toothpick - and is classy to boot.

I also wholeheartedly agree with @OscarKlosoff . I don't like Nomos. They look like a bastard child of some random 1940s Bauhaus watch and Skagen. Dull, cloy, and if I was to imagine the typical Nomos wearer, it'd be some self-pitying dude in skinny pants, an oversized beanie and little brains underneath said beanie. Oh, and a cup of the muddy puddle water that Starbucks calls coffee. With soybean milk, of course...eeek, now pardon me, I have to go and vomit after merely having imagined that.

Yea correct, champagne is what I saw and looks like a cream to me which I love. At least closer to white than blue 🤷‍♂😂

I went to an AD to try on that Longines last year. Didn't end up buying it, but it is lovely. I agree about the photos on the web site and the dial color. It does look better in person, but I also wish it was white.

I'd agree with other posters that the Nomos is probably the fresher-looking (younger-looking?) watch, but I'd prefer the Longines. Depends what you're looking for, I guess.

·

I like the Longines better than Nomos. The Nomos watches are all so similar to one another. Plus the Longines has the heritage thing going for them, in spades.

·

I love my Nomos! I've tried Longines on in store, and they don't resonate with me as much as Nomos, overall.

Great point! I mean the standard Tangente already captures the Bauhaus essence. With that budget I can get a Longines and a standard Tangente... Oops...

·

I think one is born a Pro-Mos or a No-Mos, and I’m the latter. So, I’d go with the Longines, I think they are very well finished watches for the price.

·

I'm surprised there is so much hate for Nomos, people even characterizing us owners as weirdos! Such vitriol over a watch! I understand their styles are polarizing, but insults and hatred for us owners seem misplaced. I like WC because there is little of this, but, let's face it, there will always be those who need to insult others with differing tastes as they need constant validation from others of their own tastes.

In any case, I love my Tangente Gangreserve because I like the unique power reserve and like that it is off-center. I prefer balance over symmetry which is why I wear my beanie canted to the left! 😜
