Marking the Passage of Time: A Gift for Graduation

Last weekend, I watched as my first-born graduated from university summa cum laude. I couldn't help but shed a tear or two and reflect on how it seems he's grown up in the blink of an eye. My wife and I have seen him work very hard at his studies since he was little and especially so over the past 4 yrs including 3 years of a global pandemic!

My wife and I wanted to present him with something symbolic and both of us thought a watch would be perfect. Growing up in America in 70s & 80s with parents with of very modest means, I saw Rolex only in movies. Only later in my own life have I gotten to where I was able to mark my own successes with a nice watch, and now I'm able to pass on something to him at an important moment in his life.

So, we gifted my son the Rolex Datejust 41 with "Wimbledon" dial that I originally acquired last year for myself. We told him that we wanted him to understand that it was a symbol of his hard work but to also understand its value and what it took to for us to be able to do this for him. We presented the watch to him before he was inducted into the university's local chapter of Phi Betta Kappa honor society and a day before he walked across the stage to receive his diploma. He was very surprised, humble and grateful. All that we could ask for. And yes you bet I had the chat about taking care of it, treating it with care but appreciating it!

"Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived." - Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Seeing how he's taken to the watch the past week and keeps looking down at it on his wrist when he wears it, I think I've infected him with the love of watches that I caught so many years ago. To be honest, I think it looks much better on his wrist than on my own. 😀

Congrats to him & you!

I love TOS, but Jean-Luc Picard is the greatest captain in the history of Starfleet. Much love baby! And congrats on your sons achievement!

First congratulations to your son for a huge accomplishment and for you for raising the next generation in the right way!

Speaking of The Next Generation, I used that Captain Picard quote for my high school yearbook. It’s a great bookend to Soran’s quote “Time is a predator; it’s stalking you. Oh, you can try to outrun it…But in the end, time is going to hunt you down and make the kill”. ST:Generations, criminally underrated and made even better with the Picard series.

You son reminded me of Batman with your photoshopping his face leaving only the mouth visible 😂

Congratulations to your son, I'm sure you are all very proud!

I'm from Northern Ireland, I couldn't help but laugh at the face disguise you used, we educate our children here to keep them away from a life of the Balaclava!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
