Spring Drive for the peasantry?

I would consider this to be one of my "mini-grail" watches. I am in love with this line-up. For me the hardest part is which one to choose. Who here has one? Want`s one? Which one would you choose and why? What is your opinion on the spring drive being in a lowly Seiko for this price?

The design of the Prospex LX line strikes an unusual balance. On the one hand, it is true to its heritage and its overall appearance reveals its strong link with the 1968 professional Diver’s. On the other, it is thoroughly modern in its execution. The upper side of the case is set at a more pronounced angle to allow the Zaratsu-polished surfaces to shine more brightly.

The contemporary feel of the LX line is revealed in the use of Seiko’s advanced 5R Spring Drive caliber, which offers one-second a day precision alongside high levels of shock and temperature resistance. With these attributes, 5R is the perfect caliber for use in all types of sporting and adventure environment; it has been worn successfully both in space, when it travelled to the International Space Station and was worn on a space walk and at the top of the world, when Yuichiro Miura wore a Spring Drive watch on his third successful ascent of Mount Everest.

the light grey dial, Wow it's beautiful 😍

·

Does the bezel rotate? It has the coin edge but half the numerals for the GMT are on the dial.

I do like that gray one, too. I’m a little spring drived out, but maybe some day.

·

Love the light gray one.

·

I think @Ichibunz has the one with the grey / white dial on the way.

Yes it does rotate. It is a true travelers GMT.

With the 24 hour dial in the rehaut, you could track 3 time zones. I’ve only seen these on Seikos.

Local time can be set with the 1 hour jump, home time with the GMT hand using the rehaut, 3rd coming from GMT and the rotating bezel.

Peasantry? 5K and up, yikes!

·

It's better described that it's for the peasantry that got itself out of serfdom and is on its way to prosperity and wealth. It's not exactly a watch for the proletariat.

·

Yeah, I can't do the power reserve on the dial like that. Just looks like an afterthought.

·

LOVE the LX line, especially the diver range. Would I buy it over a GS? Hard no unfortunately. But I do understand the desirability

I think @Ichibunz has the one with the grey / white dial on the way.

Of course he does… Seiko DiCaprio never wears the same watch for more than 48hrs.

Exactly - I mean, we’ve gone all elitist on here recently, wringing our hands over the fact some of us are wearing our “budget” pieces more than the “luxury” and checking that’s acceptable, and now it’s turning into pay-to-play with the peasantry being able to afford 2-3k for a non-Grand Seiko. Why you’d want to spend that much on a Seiko anyway is beyond me, but hey, I’m not here to judge, but more here now to be turned away from the party. Oh well…

Not sure I agree completely. Very few can even realistically dream about about spending $20k on a watch. $5k on the other hand, while still out of reach for many, is still a lot more attainable, and a much easier pill to swallow. I can`t bring myself to pay such a high premium just for the brand name.

The fact that $5k and attainable are in the same sentence is galling.

I thought the clergy were renowned for their charity.

I make below the average wage of most Americans (50-55k is average according to the internet)

Even for me 5k is attainable but something I would have to save up for over a period of years. Most people are simply not financially responsible enough to do it is my opinion. Sacrifices would be involved (giving up my beer money for example). So is it possible I would say yes for most people, is it easy? Hell no. Just my .02

Now that is out of the way I think its great that Seiko is offering spring drive in a lower tier watch making it available to more people in general 🙂

I`m not that kind of Reverend good sir. I am an ordained minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

“Disclaimer: While Pastafarianism is the only religion based on empirical evidence, it should also be noted that this is a faith-based book. Attentive readers will note numerous holes and contradictions throughout the text; they will even find blatant lies and exaggerations. These have been placed there to test the reader's faith.”― Bobby Henderson, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Great… and they wonder why debate is dead on here.

It’s not really that more affordable…

Better then $20k and up for the same movement in a slightly shinier package.

True. That’s why I’m looking at pre-owned GS. 😊. The Spring Drive movement is definitely something I want too. To be honest, if I could ever get this Presage Spring Drive. I think I’d be done. I think…

Why a "Hard no"? the quality is almost comparable, and the movement is GS. Curious about everyone's thoughts and reasoning.

Imo it aint a GS movement unless its finished and regulated by GS. At this price point, youre looking at the LX vs a basic GS spring drive, and I’d take the GS anytime just on finishing, regulation and warranty alone. Save up a little more and you can afford the fancier dials. Whats not to like?
