Tentative plans for the next couple years

First I have to say that I work 3rd shift so my timing is a little different from most people’s. I am also thankful that I found and joined this place. I haven’t found the snobbery and gatekeeping that I have found most places.

Anyway the Mrs and I were out running some errands today and picked up a conversation that we began last night before I left for work. She had pointed out to me that I was starting to get into my old pattern with watches again. So this made me really stop and think about what I really wanted in watches. Last night I was all set to pull the trigger on a Seiko Monster homage. She was right. I was getting back into my old pattern. I would buy a watch, love it for a week or two and then be ready to flip it even at a loss.

This behavior of mine was what jaded me to the hobby a couple of years ago, well compounded with my dad dying. Also in the past, she would often engage in retail therapy, and I would have to constantly sell my watches to bail us out. It was a shitty cycle. But we have both changed over the past 5 years.

By the way I do not go into debt for watches. I set a little aside each pay and save for what I want.

Anyways I have my quartz watches covered rather nicely. And I am not one pf those individuals that want to have a ton of watches, maybe 10 max in the end.

I am also going to say that I have never had a swiss automatic, as they are a bit pricey, for now. But back to part of my bias on autos. This will win me no friends saying this. I detest Seiko automatic movements. They are unreliable and I have to try regulating them to even get them close to being decent. The Miyota movements I have had in the past have always been good, and I wish I still had them.

Now to my plan if you’re still here. In 2024 I am planning to buy 2 watches and reduce what I currently have to 4 quartz so at the end of 2024 I will have 6 watches. I am going to most likely get a Traska Summiteer 38 and there are a few divers I am looking at. I am open to suggestions on divers. 30-42mm case, no Seiko movements, standard lugs, no date. Right now the forerunners are the NTH Amphion, Newmark 71 Sports, and RLG Oceanfarer. Also I am trying to keep the price below $800usd which is alot of money for me.

Now let us say that I have both of my autos and absolutely love them. I’m sure that I will like them, but love? Who can say. But let is say I love them. Then I will allow myself to go and try on multiple times the Tudor Ranger and BB58. If I feel that they are that much better than what I already have at that point, then I will save for them.

By the way, if you have any of the above miyota watches and are thinking of selling them, pm me. Perhaps we can come to an agreement.

But these are my tentative plans for the next couple of years.

It’s always good to reflect and adjust how you want to continue in this haphazard journey of watch-collecting, and year-end is the best time to do it! As for the quartz vs. mechanical debate, what are you looking for in a watch? If it’s accuracy then stick to quartz you won’t find better even if you go into Swiss-made movements. Buy and collect what you like, it’s YOUR hobby. :) Merry Christmas!

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve told many people since I began to buy what they like. Just don’t want to end up with a ton of watches again.
