Did you see feature on watch collecting on CBS?

CBS Saturday morning had a nice feature story today on watch collecting and the growth since the pandemic and Apple Watch introduction. They devoted 3-4 minutes to it.
Hodinkee is featured and John Mayer, Brooke Shields and more are interviewed. Some incredible watches are shown.

Missed it. In a selfish way, I don’t want Watch collecting to be any more popular. It’s already hard to get/afford many watches, I don’t want that getting any worse.

I have to admit I thought to myself, “this won’t help affordability”.

Yeah, affordability (if that even exists for the most desired tier) might take a hit, but it will likely be felt most at the top end & lessen through the lower tiers.

That said, this is more a reaction piece than a "Hey look at what these cool people are doing!" piece. We've already seen the effect.

My real concern isn’t that it’ll be even harder to get a Rolex, it’s that lower tier brands will start to be more expensive and harder to get.

My budget is low tier but I am determined to own an Omega one day. Which for me anyway, is high tier.

Admittedly part of the joy for me is amassing an eclectic collection on a reasonable budget. Not that I would not enjoy having Patek money to drop without thought. In a way that kills some of the joy to me.

Same! I have some weird pieces and all told, my collection doesn't even cost as much as a single Speedy Reduced.

For me, it's the fun of finding those gems most of the horological world either doesn't care for or has little to no knowledge of.

Does it keep time and do I like it? That’s all that matters really. Watch snobs, car snobs, anything snobs be damned.
Sure I love a Rolex Submariner but I also love a Casio Duro diver for $40 on Amazon. Value for dollar I will go to my grave saying the Casio is a better timepiece.

I wonder...if the number of people who collect watches increased, that could pave the way for many new brands, designs and possibly new complications. It could sweeten the horological flower garden with ever- burgeoning flora and fauna.

That's a bold statement for the Rolex chums, mate. Better don the Kevlar!

Omega is absolutely aspirational and high tier. Took me a while to get one and I’m completely content. Easily my most worn watch.

I really didn’t mean to start a war and take it with a grain of salt. Sure very different watches but you can dive with both without issue and hard to quantify value in this comparison except strictly on doing it’s designated job. So at $40 the Casio is hard to beat.

Oh, I'm with ya -- my comment was in jest (much of my commenting is riddled with silly goofs because I'm kind of a silly weirdo). I was talking about the folks who have subbies and such. I for one don't have the dough for that. And if I did... there are about 7345.2 divers from which I could choose as a very statisfying alternative.

Did you notice that Michelle Miller casually dropped that there are 60 watches in her household? Marc Morial must be a collector.

Yeah. I noticed though she was wearing what looked to be an Apple Watch.
