Gen Z are buying “dupes” and high end brands are encouraged to embrace the rise of #dupe

I have nothing to add really, I just know that this will trigger a few people, and I just don’t particularly care.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s a lot more nuanced than a lot of posts on here are trying to make it out to be. You can buy the homage to test the water, you can buy the homage to avoid the exorbitant price tags of the original. You may just appreciate that it does the basics well, and that is just fine… or not. Here comes the #luxury police.

Just thought this was a fun read. I’d love a Rolex #dupeswap - oh how fun that could be!

Interesting read. I did notice it is seen as "cool" in some circles to buy counterfeits as an "act of rebellion" to give the middle finger to luxury brands and their exorbitant markups. Clothes, bags, perfumes, even furniture.

It very much speaks to the current divide between social classes and the diminishing purchasing power of the majority of people struggling to keep up with inflation. And what better target to be upset at than the luxury industry raising their own prices multiple times over inflation just because they can?

It reminds me of Studio Underdog’s response to finding a homage of their chrono watch on Ali Express. For those who missed it, they made a video comparing the original vs homage, praised the homage’s quality, noted that they really liked their one original colorway and decided to copy it for a limited release lol.

I find it pretty lazy to just focus on [insert current generation of teenagers] as the source of this. Remember all those Gen X-ers and millennials pirating music and all the media get could get their hands on? And buying fakes on purpose is not at all new. Most people I see on the usual fake buying forums are people in their late 20s to 40s

There are some reasons to not support homage makers: especially when quality control is low or a design or technology is reasonably new. For me I think the cut off should be something like 10 to 75 years, depending on the importance and accessibility of the original idea after which, if the homages are good and/or the originals are inaccessible they should be allowed on the marketplace or otherwise be worthy of purchase. For example, I feel embarrassment owning a fake PP that doesnt work almost at all, but no shame whatsoever at having a steel gshock square homage that cost far less than the inflated current retail prices with different but similar usefulness. That said if we were talking an exact or very close imitation of a particularly innovative classic g-shock I would say one of these companies deserves the money and the other does not.
