Don’t have a grail watch

Am I the only one that doesn’t have a grail watch that I have to have?

I have temporary infatuations, but no grail.

·

I gave up on the idea for a few reasons:

  1.  I didn't want the hobby to turn into "climbing the ladder" or flipping watches I already love to buy one I think I'll love.
  2.  I realized spending more money on a watch was no guarantee the watch would make me happier. I love my $400 Navigator more than other watches that were more expensive.
  3.  I'm a pretty average guy, I have other things I could spend that "grail" money on, that I would enjoy more. Things like other hobbies, or travel...
  4.  I like variety. If I used every penny I've spent on my watches on one watch, I could buy a "grail" level watch, but I'd be bored with only one watch.

It is okay to like many things at the same time. I think most of us have a dream watch of some kind, but it is okay to admire from a far without the concept of grail.

·

I’m still sitting, watching from the sidewalk and quietly waiting for my grail and say ‘please be mine’.

·

I just don’t think you’re trying hard enough... first, you need to start yourself a grail diary where you’ll take copious notes and maniacally sketch renderings of your coveted watch. Should look something like this in the end… mind the tattered pages, those are important:

Next, and please just go with me on this one, you’re gonna need to get yourself a bullwhip. What are you going to do with it? I am not positive, but it looks great with the fedora. Oh yeah, you’re gonna need a fedora. Maybe start with that, then get the bullwhip. 😂

On a serious note, I say don’t take the hobby too seriously… sounds likely you have a healthy perspective, even if it means you never get to crack a whip. Good luck on the watch trails ahead! 🤙

No grail watch...no bucket list...no self-control...

No grail here, there isn't a watch that I aspire to buy but couldn't now if I wanted to.

I don't like that whole idea of flip three to buy one, the upgrade ladder, the market, the grail. It seems like gamification.

A grail? Nahh... Do I own a watch I never thought I'd own? Yes:

Are there still watches I would love but will never get because of price, rarity or it's out of production? Sure!! Do I mind really? Not today, but I'm in a good mood today 🤪

·

I don’t think I would have had one were it not for trying on a Patek Aquanaut in the AD. Ever since it’s been a “one day” goal..

·

I think that grail watches are just watches you would get as a treat - but realy realy hard to obtain or expensive. There is no grail watch for low budget (atleast for me :))

·

Don’t do grails, just roll with what falls into my sphere of influence.

·

I don't have a grail either. I like the watches that I have more than the watches that I don't have.

·

Mine is not that expensive and isn't perfect either so I'm still not 100% sure I'll get it.

It's the closest thing I have to a grale.

I guess you could call it my grape.

I might get it someday and then sell it when I find an upgrade.

It's titanium with digital timers and a quick micro adjust clasp.

Grail watches in the usual sense, no - mostly, I don't see the value in luxury watches, and for those rare cases where I do (see some value) I cannot see myself wearing one, as it sort of takes the fun out of watch collecting.

Outside luxury watches (and I draw the line low) I just buy the watches I like, this month I already bought six.

However, I currently I have kind of a grail: that would be a digital quartz that has elegant looks, good build quality, is of wearable size (max 40mm for me), all the major functions of digital watches, ideally solar capacitor, and that is a strap monster; in particular it does not have an integrated bracelet/strap. It's a grail because it does not seem to exist, or not anymore. The strap criterion is the real killer here. [Note: just because some companies, like Vario, make specialist straps for the Casio Royale, does not make this a strap monster, never mind that it's ugly; those are specialist straps and changing them is most likely a torturous affair.] I also emphasized the word digital, as in: look mum, no hands.

I have no grail and I don't believe in that concept.

·

I don't chase dragons either.

·

Having one would make it easier, but I don't have one either. So no matter what I buy, there is this nagging question whether the new watch is truly better than what I already own.

·

My Grail watch is my next watch. A Grail would imply forethought and organization on my part. Not gonna happen. Oooh, shiny..... 😃

That's an awesome photo!

Better to not have one, then buy your grail, first and chase that "want"when you look for another. I can spend more for another one, but it won't have the same feeling. That sounded like an addict looking for their first time again.

That's an awesome photo!

Thanks 😅

For me I think the only real grail I have is a 20th anniversary speedmaster.  Like most people, I love the speedmaster and because I was born in 1989 it would make the perfect birthyear watch.  Plus, although expensive, they are worn so I would get to actually enjoy it rather than feel the need to keep it flawless.

·

You just haven’t figured it out yet. It’s like finding your spouse… none are quite right… yet… then it finds you…

·

The one watch that would make me stop wanting other watches? Doesn't exist. Is a myth.

Nope.  Some watches that I like (some expensive, some not), but I feel like the idea of a "grail" is kind of weird.

·

I would argue that "have to have" doesn't fit into the definition of a grail. For me a grail has an element of being just out of reach and its visage (more oft than not) remains obstructed. It exhibits an element of unobtainium but not necessarily driven by price or budget. It could be due to rarity/scarcity.

·

Grail would mean the journey is over….. That’s something I don’t want to happen.

·

Nor do I. I have a list of things I want but my likes continue to grow. Collecting is about the experience and it isn’t a race.

I own one of two my grail watches. My second Grail watch is a Jean Revlin Automatic Month Day Swiss Made Shock Resistant watch with a white and black dail on it.
