Ok guys question of the day!!!

Which Chronograph would you choose if you had only one choice? Mine would be the Omega Speed master in solid gold. Reasons being it's has the heritage. The gold well who doesn't like gold? It just is a solid choice for me. What do you guys think? Would love to hear your thoughts.

You know, there's "stated preference" and there's "revealed preference."

I mean, if you were to ask me, I'd say, "Oh, definitely this..."

But, I didn't buy it.  And I have no plans to buy it.

I did buy this...

So, which is the truth?

If we were to believe "stated preference" then I'll also tell you that I care about the world, I'm a humanitarian, I care deeply about stray cats...  whatever it takes to get you to get in bed with me, I'm happy to state.

I own the ones I want (Daytona, Speedy, etc), but if I could add just one, no doubt it would be a 5270P:

I just visited a local AD and tried on a LE 100 piece Montblanc monopusher. It's a shame the back was covered with plastic. Take a look at these beautiful shots of the Minvera monopusher movement:

That devil's tail is beautiful. I started the chrono and the action was actually so soft yet crisp. Felt like no other chrono I've started so far.

Sensei, where have you been all my life!?!?

I am probably going to be crucified for saying this but I can't let unknowing Watch Crunchers waste their money.  If a chronograph has a cam, it is not great.  If it also has a horizontal clutch it is mediocre at best.  Yes I am criticizing the ETA Valjoux movement and others.  A horizontal clutch is exactly like shifting your automobile with standard transmission from gear to gear without using the clutch pedal.  Every time you start your timer the watch jams a gear into another gear without  aligning them so they bang and wear.  A vertical clutch is like using the clutch pedal on a car and it puts downward pressure on the wheel so no gear ever has to engage another. Virtually no wear.  The Column Wheel has always been a superior on off switch to the cam but they were once expensive to make.  Thanks to Computer Numerical Controlled machining they cost very little more. My pick is going to be a Zenith El Primero but Longines and others make some very good chronographs as well.

Beautiful movement with a Column Wheel, I totally approve.

·

Beautiful movement with a totally different looking column wheel than everyone else.  What else would you expect from Patek.

If I could afford it, the gold Speedy would be my choice as well.

I'll bet there's gotta be some country out there with rational healthcare policies...  and, if so, they'd allow you to sell one of your kidneys!

While we have rules about that sort of thing, there are ways around said rules.

I just don't NEED the watch that badly to go to the trouble

Lange Triple Split for me.

If I were to shoot for the stars than I say the Lange triple split but as for something I could actually conceivably obtain it would have to be the Breitling Navitimer 41 in blue.

·

For me, it would be this.

Canopus gold, "stealth wealth" for watch nerds.

·

The Breitling Crosswind Special I have in my collection.  It has a a ‘big date’ complication, which I love, in addition to the chronograph.

·

I know, I know, there are lots of incredible, gorgeous, interesting and mind bogglingly expensive chronographs out there, but you’d have to pry my basic, Hesalite Speedmaster Pro from my cold dead hands.

I got to try this on in the metal. It will be mine…someday.

I tried on the Canopus. It was amazing and amazingly heavy!

That's a beautiful watch. I didn't know it existed. I love Arabic numbers on watches, to say that a chronograph has them is terrific. I have only see Banton's or small strips.

·

Hard to argue against a gold Speedy, specially with this green dial 😎👍

Are they selling the green dial gold Speedies now? The last time I checked they indicated they wouldn't be available till next year because they use Russian gold for that model and they can't get any of that gold at present. I couldn't even pre-order - they wouldn't take my money.

You had the opportunity to buy one?

Oh, no, dude, sorry if that was misleading.  I only meant that when it came out, it crossed my mind to order one, but I've not followed up on it or anything.

It's an absolutely gorgeous watch...  I just don't think I can pull it off.  I'm no Ryan Reynolds.

This is the only one I’ve ever actually wanted. Not really a chronograph guy, but I’m most certainly a JLC guy.

Very interesting, MegaBob, What Federico leaves out is that you are not going to service a cam chronograph with a horizontal for under $1000.00.   There are so many small springs on a cam movement and watchmakers hate to service them.

I guess the lesson that I learned from Federico is to not keep a chronograph on the watch winder when not in use in order to make the clutch last longer.  The thing I didn't mention earlier is the pushers on a vertical clutch watch feel so positive and crisp where some times the pushers on a cam movement feel very sloppy with play in them.

·

Yes - the problem with vertical clutches is that you need to run the chronograph if the watch is wound. Otherwise, it's like you are driving with your foot on the brake all of the time. It's the thing that makes the vertical clutch awesome - you can run the chronograph without wearing it out, but if you don't run the chronograph, you are going to be putting pressure on the clutch and potentially be in for an expensive service.

·

I’m agreeing with the gold speedmaster. That thing may be a perfect watch for me.

·

This may be one of the better articles that explain the different chronograph movements:

https://revolutionwatch.com/rules-chronograph-engagement/

You raise excellent points - similar points can be made about perpetual calendars. There are some where you cannot damage the watch by turning time backwards, but most perpetual calendars are really finicky and it is dangerous to set them unless you are intimately familiar with the do's and don't's of what you can do (the only reason I have a couple of watch winders for my perpetual calendars).

·

Money no object, has to be the 5470 P. What else ?
