Sell the Iwc and buy a Santos…or buy a quartz tank?

Hi everyone,

I am making up my mind about  my next purchase and chances are it will be a Cartier. I love the brand and having french roots, it would be kinda cool to have a Cartier…

this is not a purchase I will do immediately, but rather in the next months…so there is no hurry, but I really like to think my next purchase through over a longer period….for me that is just part of the fun 🙃

I had a quick visit to my Ad this week and tried on both the santos medium and the tank. I like both watches  for what they are and might end up with either the santos or the tank. If I go for the Santos, I will need to fund it by selling a watch in my collection and I think I would sell my Iwc mk XVI. If I go for the tank, I could keep the Iwc. on the other way, I am not sure if I still need the Iwc in my collection since I got the explorer last month…

as previously said, not a decision I will take in the next weeks, but I thought it would be a fun topic to chat about on watchcrunch 😉

Personally I’d go with the santos. Think its a more versatile watch and just looks better in my opinion

·

I'll vote for Santos ✔

·

Booth looks great but Santos is a favorite. Your choise and take your time.

·

They both look awesome and you should absolutely go with whichever speaks to you, but I'd say the Tank on that strap looks best to me. 👌

·

I personally would go with the Santos, the Mark watches never really got me. The Santos looks great on your wrist, while the Tank looks a bit large (for a Tank). However if you would go with the Tank, go with the Solarbeat and not the standard quartz even if you have to wait longer. But you are anyway not in a hurry.

Absolutely love the Tank and the solarbeat seems a great modern take on a classic. I am also very tempted by it (and have a mkXVI too which I am very attached to)

·

I'd personally say it depends on your lifestyle. I think the Santos is more versatile and could potentially get more wrist hours, but if you fancy more dressy watches, or find yourself in situations where they're more appropiate, the Tank would be the way to go.

It's a great approach to take things easy, instead of rushing the purchase. One way or another, you'll be purchasing a wonderful timepiece!

·

I'll keep the IWC and get a Tank Must 👌🏻

·

Both are great choices!  Santos has been on  my list for a long time.  The Tank is one that I like the idea of, but I don't care for it on my wrist, though.

·

Buy the quartz, just my take...

Stupid question: What were your immediate emotion when you tried on both? How did they differ? (if at all)

·

I would also agree with the Santos choice. Classy but can be dressed down with leather straps.

·

What did I say the other day? Don’t sell the IWC.

This is not a stupid question, this is probably the question to ask, and I think we are all guilty of not considering this especially if purchasing remotely. I’ve gone into a jewellers with the express desire to buy a certain watch in the window and walked out with a completely different watch or no watch if it wasn’t right. I walked into Tag today to basically get my name down for a new Monaco (finally), and tried a few on and just decided sod it - it’s a no. Like the Speedy, I just can’t do it.

To be fair, I almost sold the Sapho to the AD, he was in love with it. ”I’ve never seen a watch like that before!” Hadn’t the heart to tell him it cost me £20.

Bold comment incoming - I genuinely think some of the IWC Pilots are perfectly proportioned. The Mark XVI is bang on, and on your wrist that’s a good size with diameter and lug-to-lug. Don’t sell the IWC. I might be a grump, but I’m an honest grump.

🙏 think I will follow your advice

Tank > Santos

I personally would go with the Tank. I tried both on at the Cartier Boutique and I really didn’t like the feel of the Santos, it felt kinda cheap to me tbh.

I really liked the Tank. I personally would go with the classic yellow gold one, but if that doesn’t fit your style or budget, steel is good too.

·

I like dressy watches, but I like them to serve as dailies. for that, the Santos is more versatile. The tank is More full on dress. It could serve as a daily, but for that I find it a bit… plain.

As an aside, I once tried on a Tank Americaine, which I found weirdly appealing, but I don’t think I could pull it off in real life.

I only recently started developing an appreciation for Cartier watches, and I ended up with a Santos De Cartier large, with the black dial as my first Cartier. I'd like to eventually add a Tank to my collection as well, but I felt that the Santos suited my casual lifestyle a bit better than the Tank, so it seemed a more appropriate first choice.

I think that @allthegearandnoidea hit the nail on the head - whichever one has the stronger emotional appeal to you is probably the better choice for you personally.

Well, the santos felt more luxurious but this is not necessarily what I am looking for. The tank on the other side is really small and understated. I liked both honestly, but for different reasons.

We all buy for different reasons, but I genuinely believe that if you can't "connect" with a watch, then that watch is not for you. How it makes you feel (the collector "experience") at the moment you first try it on, is one that you'll want to come back to, again and again, every time you open your watch box.

If neither of these watches give you any strong positive feedback, then you should ask yourself why you're considering these in the first place. Best not to unload a wad of cash (or selling something you genuinely love) on a 50/50 proposition.

·

Both watches are classic! Depends on which one you want to wear the most. For me, if you want to add more versatility to your collection, go for the tank. You could wear it both dress up and dress down. Just a reminder, Santos get scratches easily

Santos

·

Tank for me.

·

I feel like the Tank looks better on your wrist. Just my novice opinion!

·

I went with the Tank XL, but if you’re between these two options I would go Santos.  The 1847 movement is worth it and the bracelet is amazing.  The movement is why I went Tank XL since it is the only automatic version of the new tank line.  That being said, the high auto quartz movement used by Cartier is phenomenal.  Can’t go wrong with any choice here.

·

Not into the Santos, love the Tank tho. 😊👌

·

Both great - have tank and vintage santos. But - the tank is a clear favourite for me of the two. There is a reason the design is almost totally unchanged in 100 years. The santos is a little more modernised - which is both good and bad.

This would be my advice regardless of cost. But seeing as the tank is less than half the price of the santos - that’s worth factoring in too!

·

Santos would be my pick, but both great pieces.

The Santos can go in so many different directions. I'm also considering one rn
