How much power reserve should the NH36 have?

Hi all,

pictured is an old SKX007 that I upgraded to a new NH36 movement. But I was expecting 40 hours of power reserve, but after fully winding, and leaving off my wrist, it came in about 23 hours only. Anyone know why a new movement would have so little power reserve? My Orient Ray 2 runs way longer.

Mine  get more than a day, but I have to admit the actual times vary, not only between watches, but each individual run. Sometimes the watch starts back up immediately after a turn, sometimes I have to wind a bit more. Based on my superficial observation it's not 100% consistent.

This may sound silly but how many turns did you give it when winding? I would give it 40 or so to ensure it's fully wound

Oh I've tried up to 60 turns.

Yeah I would have allowed for a few hours either way, but 20 hours seems very low.

Yeah, that is low. I would repeat the test. Does the watch keep good time?

Is the watch properly broken in?  I would suggest wearing it for a week and then recheck the reserve.  The spring may be so stiff it isn't winding all the way and the clutch is slipping.

It tends to run fast, I have tried to adjust but I don't have a timegrapher so I just let it run fast, probably picks up a minute or 2 per day.

Oh I see, many thanks for that I will try it. I don't think Ive worn it for that long at a time yet. I wonder if it might have something to do with the stem I had to cut down, perhaps it is factor in how the spring is being wound. But it was the one that came with the NH36 movement which come extra long for you to resize to suit whatever case you have.

Okay, that is seriously fast. I tend to regulate my watches when they exceed 10 seconds a day. Most of them are around 5 seconds. Breaking it in, just like @surferjohn said, might also be good advice. I wait at least a month before regulating my watches.

I have bought several vintage seikos from Gareth @ gasworks on this forum. He knows a lot of stuff about seiko movements. May be worth messaging him?

Thank you sir. I did regulate it and it is keeping better time. I did some tests and got it to 44 hours.  But usually it comes  in around 36 hours power reserve.

That's not too shabby!
