What else do you nerd out on?

For me, it’s hiking/camping gear. I just bought a new pair of waterproof trail runners, and these are unexpectedly fantastic shoes for being out in the woods.*

What other areas get your geek all a-flutter?

*Nike‘s trail runners aren’t typically taken seriously by folks in the outdoors community, including myself.

Cars, but I can only get one of them every several years. Easier to get a fix in watchland (as long as you don’t get carried away), and there are way more watchmakers than carmakers.

I nerd out on sticks. Some with string. Some with feathers.

(I guess my handle should’ve been a clue 😊)

Antique cars, clocks, vintage & antique mechanical stuff i.e. phonographs (acoustical) & music boxes, porcelain & china, worlds fair memorabilia, and more!

I used to have a Fender Quad Reverb, and I still haven’t emotionally recovered from selling it.

Taking my son camping is one of my greatest joys in life. This is my son on a recent trip:

classic cars (Jensen Interceptor), guitars, guitar pedals (like watches you can’t have enough). In any order.

I could not possibly list the musical instruments or kit that I have sold that I have regrette. But how about 3 TB-303’s!

Fragrances and boots.

Worked on these cars a very long time ago, I won’t even ask your MPG

Hi-Fi. Watches are easier to collect though, I have several amps and speakers in storage.

Also have camping gear, guns, knives, and pens. More than I need, but not quite a collector.

I nerd out on ultralight backpacking gear. I love how the little 'microbrands' lead the way. This little tent from Durston Gear has a cult following. For a time, demand far exceed supply. They sold out in minutes and showed up on ebay for 3 x retail. Sound familiar? 😄

I got in early so I'm like that guy who got a Rolex at a discount.

Nice shoes. I recently bought the comfiest pair I could find which were Sketchers. Because my old ones were so old they were getting painful.

Image

Not a great pic of them lol.

I also enjoy photography, sewing, cats, cool tools, driving simulators on the computer (only with a full wheel, pedal and shifter setup), skateboarding and the past few days I've been getting into learning to brew good coffee at home with recently ground beans. I made a pretty great one this morning.

I'm probably forgetting some stuff. I'm into a lot of crap while also trying to be a minimalist lol.

Thanks for the kind words. Those are some really cool guitars! I love Danelectros - both vintage and reissues especially the ones that come with the amp-in case.

I can help you increase your guitar collection 😀 - my wife would love for me to offload some of them.

Keep on Rockin'!

What's your preferred setup? What styles do you play?

Which one would you choose to save if your house was on fire?

As my wife would say - I collect guitars better than I play them.

I play all kinds of styles but I'm more competent in rock and folk than jazz.

My favorite amp combination is the Vox AC 30 in British Racing Green together with the Supro Black Magick - the combination of bright chiming guitar from the Vox and dark lord Jimmy Page from the Supro is a magical sound. I use the Dunlop MXR A/B box to switch between them and combine them - works really well. You can also keep one amp clean and use pedals with the second amp. Spread apart it creates a great stereo effect that sounds like three guitars.

Which guitar to take out in a fire - that's a tough one - I guess it would have to be my Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue...it's an amazing guitar...if I could take one more it would be my Taylor Koa 12-string acoustic...

The green AC30 would pair well with a Seiko Alpinist and the Supro with an old mil spec black dialed diver.

Gus, the sorta boxer, kitchen gadgets (I consider Orient Divers a kitchen gadget, i.e. 200 meter water resistance) but anything else that makes cooking/baking easier and fountain pens. In the pen department especially Pelican m400 series Souverains and my favorite "daily drivers" my Narwhal steel nib and my Lamy 2000 which has an amazing gold nib.

Looks like fun.  Something I could push my kids off of.

I used to collect synthesisers, samplers, rackmount modules, etc… but it was all under the guise of productivity rather than what it was, stupid. I got a bit nostalgic about using an Akai S950 and a Korg M1 in the 90s to write bouncy techno and thought it would be a good idea to recreate workflow, but then realised that there was nothing wrong with the all digital setup I had. Doh…

I used to buy vinyl from ages 12-27, it was the only way to get the stuff I was into. I could rock up at Camden and Soho on the weekend and leave with multiple boxes worth of jungle and techno. Oh well… that’s all gone.

Watches are pretty low key.

Do you collect vintage?  Which instruments do you collect?

Wow that’s quite a collection you’ve got! For me originally, jazz bass gigs payed for the instruments, so an upright a P and a fretless jazz bass, but if it’s got strings I try to pick it up. Got some deering banjos, mando, tele,  custom Brown Bear jazzmaster, martins, nylon Yamahas and drums, but just moved the music room downstairs (having another baby)…so lots of keys, synths (loving the moog matriarch and memotron), since I can throw on some headphones on and not worry about waking anybody up.

I'm big on hats (scally caps), shoes (allbirds), and books (I have the whole Stephen King library)

Cars…like watches all brands are in play

·

Grilling. BBQing (which are two completely different things).

Also books and reading.

Porsches (like watches, can’t afford most of them but still enjoy them from all time periods).

Not at much right now but bicycles and bike parts.  Here are some of the parts from the last new bike I got.  I brought the hubs to the painter and told him to surprise me.  All things considered he went subtle.

I had his daughter paint a different bike for me and it was really wild.
