Cartier Santos vs Hamilton Boulton

I have dreams of purchasing a Cartier Santos Dumont in a blue leather strap and have for some time now. I am psychotherapist and will indeed get good wear out of it. Recently I discovered the Hamilton Boulton and feel like it is beautiful watch for less than 1/4 the price. Am I fooling myself into thinking I can replace my grail? Should I just save up for the Santos? Thoughts?

I love Cartier and the Santos Dumont. Of course, it is hard to argue value when there are so many great alternatives around (like the Hamilton). From my experience nothing can replace a grail once it has made its way into your head. I think a nice dress watch is a good place to allocate the money for a really nice piece, but I would never buy a watch that puts me into financial trouble or uncertainty. Saving up is fine and will only enhance the felt achiement of owning the watch though. I have a tank must XL. And for me it was worth saving up to :)

Hey there, I just looked up the Boulton and wow, you are right! It’s gorgeous and yup, a fraction of the Dumont. Outside of the dial shape differences, there are definitely Cartier DNA crossovers to the Hamilton. Buying the Boulton doesn’t translate to you replacing your dream watch. You’re simply having a nice layover with the Boulton while en route to the Dumont, whenever that might be. And once you’re close to affording the Dumont, you can always sell the Boulton to get you across the finish line. All in all, if you have the funds for the Hamilton, I’d buy, love and enjoy it. Thank you for introducing me to a beautiful new watch!!

I love the boulton and square watches in general. There is also nice oris and longines if you want. But one thing with cartier is that the main appeal of this brand is not specs but the design and the history. I don't think you can replace it with something else if you are fixed on it. You can definitly buy something in the meantime and put money aside for a santos later.

Cartier Santos +1

Boulton is nice but like the comment above, it wont replace the grail

Cartier is an attainable luxury watch. If you really want one, you can get one without too much sacrifice. The problem that I have with Hamilton (and Bulova) re-issuing their greatest hits like the Boulton (first introduced in 1940) is that they make them too large. Non-round watches wear larger then their measurements would suggest.

For rectangular watches there are always vintage options...

I'd say try them on. Honestly the Cartier will be marginally better in terms of movement (even quartz will have convenience improvements like longer battery life), finishing, and "heritage". Are those things worth it to you? Also having both isn't necessarily a bad move, they look quite different afterall... 😈

Never seen that watch before! Nice!

I've considered going the other way. That is to say I have had a few cartiers but strongly looked at the Boulton. I just love how sculptural it is.

I'd say go for it. As long as you get a good price it wont cost you too much if you decide to sell and upgrade!

Santos all day

Save for the Santos, alternatives are short lived scratch that will leave you disappointed and empty wallet

·

I don't think there is much of a comparison here, save up and get the Cartier. I had a couple of Cartier in my collection (Pasha Seatimer, Roadster XL) but sold them during a downsizing. Very nice quality pieces that will satisfy.

Tough. I love both Hamilton and Cartier. This year, Hamilton is my Swiss watch of choice. But I do want to save up for the Santos. I'm going to be of no help to you. I'm in the same situation, brother.
