Zeppelin Hindenburg LZ129 Moonphase Review

After looking at a number of German-Made watches for sale in Paris and Vienna last week, my wife surprised me with this lovely Zeppelin.

While not expensive, it is the first "non-beater" in my collection, and I love its Art Nouveau styling and the complications (I don't need a moonphase but it's really lovely and it actually works). I love the distortion of the hessalite. I love the looks of the dial and subdials. Really looks much better in person than in all the online photos, many of which exaggerate the silver of the dial.

The Rhonda 706B quartz movement has been great so far (one week in), and the seconds hand hits all the markers.

The strap is much higher quality leather than I expected, and it "broke in" in about two days. Was never uncomfortable before, just a little stiff. The alligator embossing looks really good in person and kind of elevates it to dress watch status.

We'll see how the gold plating holds up over time, but everything initially at least looks and feels like a much more expensive watch.

Really looks a lot like a Patek Phillipe Moonphase that costs as much as my house.

Really beautiful in my opinion.

It's 40mm in diameter, 10mm high, 20mm lug width, and 58 grams without a strap. Very lightweight, anyway. Stainless beneath the plating.

It also comes in a 36mm variant, as well as in a steel colored case.

It's "splash resistant" so I wear it with that in mind.

And as I play rock, blues, and jazz guitar, more Zeppelin is always welcome in my life.

My review keeps in mind the price point, which is $200-300 depending on where you live. So "quality" is based on price and function, not in comparison to a Rolex or even to one of my rugged handle-anything G-Shocks.

For what it is, and how it should be used, I love this watch.

  • Art Nouveau styling
  • Accuracy
  • Light weight
  • Value for price
  • Funkiness
  • The movement is very complicated to set, but minor adjustments to make up lost seconds or to change days are simple once the big complications are set.
  • Bear in mind the hesalite and the water resistance (almost none).

Brilliant review, had my eye on Zeppelin for a while, might have to grab one if I can find a good deal on one, definitely a brand I'll keep an eye on as the year goes on

Thanks for the thoughtful review! That's an interesting watch, although, as a Zeppelin, the Hindenburg didn't fare so well.

It’s fine so long as you avoid New Jersey.

I saw some good prices on the Creation Watches website, I think they're based in Singapore.
