The research and hunt for the right piece is definitely a part of the joy of collecting but actually getting that piece, that's perfect for that particular moment in my life, and getting to enjoy it every time I look at my wrist is the best payoff.
I'm voting D, but C is a pretty close second for me.
While I can and do appreciate all of the above, it's actually more of an appreciation for the mechanics, craftsmanship, and in some cases technology that goes into making a watch.
I like knowing that there is a tiny machine on my wrist. And all the different designs are amazing.
That's how I can sometimes feel when I see a great deal on a great watch. However, my watch box is full and it would take a lot for me to get rid of one of the pieces I already have.
I want the damn watch. I do find the history very interesting. Discussions can be enlightening.... except with the Rolex fanboys who have been brainwashed. lol

I only chose history because it was the closest to the enjoyment I get from seeing the artistry and mechanics as I learn to take them apart and put them back together again.
For me it's nearly 50/50.

Networking is key.
Mostly watch repair videos.
Seeing a dead mechanical watch live again is kind of spiritual to me.

What does cleaning, polishing, changing straps, attempting to fix broken ones, design anppreciation, and sentimentality come under?
To see someone's face light up when you named a somewhat obscure model watch they had on. Instant bonding.

Everyone of them is precious.

You're given only four options when you make a poll. Something like that would have been option five if I had been able to add it.

Which bit? I can’t decide myself which is the motivation 😆
(Tbh I think it kinda mostly fits between object on wrist, and a wider reading of history. As in, not brand history, but personal or familial.)
A little bit of B and a lot of A, C and D

It's funny how "discussing" watches is coming in at third on a watch forum.
50% research and collecting, 50% wearing the piece
