Save or scratch?

Do you stall your collecting and save furiously for an expensive grail watch? OR scratch the itch periodically and delay your progress?

My watch buying stalls for about a month waiting for new parts.

Scratch.  Life is too short.  One day, you go out fishing, sitting there thinking about how great it will be to one day have saved up for your grail watch, and this happens!

what grail?

y'all got any more of them watches

I scratch that itch so often I am raw and bleeding from it! 😂

·

When I've saved for my more expensive watches before it's been very hard, and although I love my more costly purchases I can't honestly say I love my cheaper ones any less. I think I could only see myself buying one of the expensive watches on my list if I get a bonus from work. I am a complete magpie and simply cannot resist temptation.

·

I have two funds, a Scratch My Itch fund and a Grail fund.

Some months I don't have an itch or I can't find the watch that will scratch it, so the Grail fund gets the Scratch My Itch money.

The Scratch My Itch fund NEVER gets money from the Grail fund.

·

I save. I haven't bought a watch in almost a year and I'm not that close to making my next purchase. Being content with what I have certainly helps. I also only tend to buy around milestone events and I haven't had anything worth celebrating in a while.

You could be describing me! 😂

Good idea. Might need to borrow this approach.

I keep an account for fun stuff (not just watches). I can't say I have a well defined grail at the moment, and find great enjoyment in things of all price ranges. So, I buy whatever interests me. Purchases are slowing down though as my collection grows and current tastes become narrowed down. If I find the account has grown to the point of grabbing a Grand Seiko or Omega, and nothing else looks interesting, maybe I'll grab something in the grail category. But for me, making sure to appreciate what I have is more important than chasing grails.

·

It depends how you buy your watches too. Some people buy after meticulously making their research and knowing every single detail of the next waych, and others can buy on impulse, but then the two groups can switch positions.

I 'delayed' the pursuit of the grail watch for a JLC Tribute Seconds but I am happy to have done that.

The issue for me really will be to not get distracted when you start to amass enough money to buy so many other stunning watches.

I am still undecided between a Breguet 3237, Vacheron Traditionnelle seconds, Lange Saxonia seconds. One day, I will be able to worry about really choosing.

·

I sometimes will feel like saving and when I do purchase the higher priced items then I think 💭 oh man! I could have bought 3 or 4 mid level watches and i’ll have options for watches and then there are days I envy a guy with just one watch and he doesn’t have to decide which watch to wear and if the watch matches his socks 🤦‍♂️… ok then there are days I wish I have more cash if I didn’t t spend it all on watches…then there are days what if I die and didn’t get to enjoy all my watches…and there are days…and days and days … oh wait what are we talking about?

·

There is no one watch that I aspire to, I do however have a list of watches I like and if I see a deal on one I may or may not jump. For a long time I thought I should aspire to an expensive grail watch but no one piece appeals to me that much. Anyway, I deposit a little bit of money every week in a 'your worth it' fund if I see a watch or something else that I want and there's enough in the fund to pay for it I go for it.

I don't scratch. Scratching spreads rashes! I have 5 in my collection. I'm good for now. I'm really not into huge luxury watches....anything over a grand is out of play. I see something that piques my interest. I research it. I watch endless videos about it. For about a week. Then I put it all away. If in a few months I still feel the urge and a connection to the watch, I may purchase it budget considering. I've got a family to consider before anything I purchase.

·

All I do is wait 😩lol

·

I am generally fine with what I have. Having covered all the bases, I want to keep a smallish collection that I try to wear in rotation at least 4x per month. However, if  I see something that catches my eye I go for it. 😜

·

Scratched a few itches the last few years, and now I'm looking to save up for a major purchase. Looking at a few years, but if something really interesting in the "affordable" range comes along then.... why not.

This tread is making me itchy all over

There's always something that comes up for me while saving for my next biggish purchase, nothing over 2K AUD for me. Someone needs the dentist or new school uniforms or the washing machine sh#t's it's self ect.. so that quickly dashes my plans and I'm back looking at budget friendly watches before some other family need depletes the watch finds completely 🤣

·

Right now I'm trying to save for a cool new years watch (TBD) luckily I don't like to buy stuff online and there are really slim pickings by me, so it's not too hard. If I end up staring at a watch at like walmart I remind myself that I'm wearing a cooler watch.

·

For me waiting is perfect , it really tests if you want something. Im focusing on building  a fancy collection and I like the discipline and patience created by that process.

Collecting comics taught me that you can acquire some really nice stuff! If you can be consistent and watch the markets ,pun intended lol

·

I find a grail watch, and then buy watches faster than I can save, until a hard to obtain watch becomes a dream!

It's not my fault, its the watch manufacturers.  They keep releasing new models, and I am weak....

·

Luckily I have no urge to spend thousands on a watch even if I really like it. Personally I don't think these super hyped and expensive grail watches Rolex etc aren't  worth what your paying for it.

The money has got out of hand that's for sure. Rolex in particular. I'd love a GMT Master II for instance but the only way you'd get one is to pay market price (about £23k). Even if you could get one at retail, it's a huge amount of money. And is it really worth it? For the average person, it's unobtainable now. Never mind the top end of Rolex. Or brands like AP. And then you have the likes of Richard Mielle. Ludicrous money! No watch is worth that much.

Yes its stupid they are not worth it thats for sure, and bear in mind that Rolex were a tool watch manufacturer back in the day and basically still are. To be honest you don't need to spend more than 2000 to get an amazing watch that will last you years. I do like the rolex milgause but won't pay the stupid prices!!!

I think if I want a GMT (that I actually like) it's probably more like £3k for the Tudor. But I've not seen one at a lower price point that sets my heart racing!
