Your choice for everyday/dress watch for 3.5K ?

Good afternoon !

I have recently resized my collection in order to have less pieces but "better" watches. I can consider a collection core around two watches : my Tudor Black Bay 58 (in picture) and a second one.

I have my budget : 3.5K€. And I'm looking for an everyday watch, more on the dress side (like the last 38mm Omega Aqua Terra). I have a 17cm (6.5 inches) wrist : perfect size is between 38 to 40mm.

What would be your advice ? Your ideas ?

I've tried the Grand Seiko SBGW231 but it wears too small on my wrist. I consider Cartier Tank Auto or Santos Dumont, Nomos Orion, Tudor Royal, Longines Silver Arrow, but I'm totally open minded.

Bonus point : metal bracelet, 100m or more of water resistance.

Thank you !

Dresswatches isn't my strong suit 😅 no pun intended!! The BB36 (above) or my vintage Omega (below) are the dressy options in my 3-watch collection. With dressy leather straps of course!!

Thanks for the propositions ! The Oris is in the style I'm looking for. The I really love the BB36 (silver is perfect for me) but 36mm is too small and 41 is too big. I just want the 39mm like the recent S&G with the in house movement, hope they will release that in the future

You mention Grand seiko and Longines silver arrow, I have those watches, and also a 6.5 inch wrist, the shots are closer up so the watch appears bigger but both wear perfectly on my wrist. GS is 40mm and Longines is 38.5mm, but the GS's short lug to lug and longines long lug to lug makes them wear similar, like a 39 I would say. You can get a silver arrow pre-owned for around 1500 usd now, and grand seiko for around that price as well.

How about a pre owned Aqua Terra?

The Oris Sixty-Five with bronze bezel only is pretty dressy too 😊 Used to own one and it went well with a suit.

Nice to see a Silver Arrow out there ! Thank you for sharing your feedback !

The last Aqua Terra are too thick for my wrist, whereas the new one are much more slimmer. And I'm a fighter against thickness 😜

You're welcome! I can only share my experience with the watches I own, now if I didn't have these two watches, this is the one I would go for:

The GS sbga293, which looks like the child between a GS and the silver arrow.

For me it's the Tudor Ranger

Oris Big Crown would be different...

Wearing the same watch you have on today @MaxEffect. hard to beat the BB58 or new Pelagos. Many GS, used Omegas, and from a micro perspective Horage and Fears.

·

Ball Engineer II Ohio was my choice for that type of watch. I really like it. Plus it'll be a good bit under budget for you. Worth a look IMHO.

My first thought goes to the Baume & Mercier Clifton Baumatic.

For 3550€ you have a really nice made dress watch on bracelet :

With 5 days Chronometer Power reserve, 40mm, nice domed sapphire glass, beautiful alpha hands and indexes, color match date wheel and a fume dial.

WR is just 50m but it's a dress watch and you sure can wash your hands with it.

Underrated piece in my opinion.

Bonne chance dans ta recherche l'ami !

That Citizen is super class!

I am a big fan of the Tank in this situation. To me, both watches in a 2-watch collection need to be versatile and I think a Tank can be ultra dressy or a T-shirt watch.

Since the 231 was too small, a 39mm Grand Seiko could be great (and you have so many choices with quartz, auto, auto high beat, spring drive). GS also has some fun dials as a contrast to the stoic Tudor.

Pre-owned Omega has a dizzying amount of choices.

·

At that price the nicest dress watch you’ll find is probably a Grand Seiko. Many options at 37mm and 39mm pick your poison. The 37mm will be mechanical manual and the 39mm automatic mechanical or spring drive depending on the model. The 39mm will wear a good amount bigger than the 37 but I’d try them on they wear pretty well. For under 3.5k you’ll probably have something like the SBGW231, SBGM221 and the SBGA283 and their other color variants. Can’t go wrong with any of them. I paired my BB58 with a SBGW231. That GS is small, I have the same size wrist and feel that it is small. But it’s a dress watch it isn’t supposed to be big.

If you want a more everyday dress watch I’d definitely go for the SBGA283. Beautiful dial, finishing, bracelet, 100m of water resistance, thin and looks amazing on straps.

·

I would look at Nomos or Sinn.  I really like the Sinn 556 series.  And the Neomatik watches from Nomos are pretty nice and fairly prices.

·

I am enamoured by the dial and movement first and foremost. Its the watch that woke me up from my Rolex-only collection and sold all of them shortly after attaining the GS; Safe to say I love it 😅

Ti was simply the cherry on the cake, for me. It is shockingly light, but I view that as tech advancement rather than “feels cheap”. And yeah, i prefer Ti nowadays for its weight, matte finish and greyish colour.

·

I'd vote a used Rolex Explorer 114270 (yes it's 36mm, but still wears well on larger wrists), OR a Monta Skyquest GMT, or the new Zodiac ceramic dive watch.

Got it! I myself have a soft spot for the asymmetrical case-eats-crown phase of the Aqua Terra - but that's not a slim watch, I agree.

I’m working in Canadian dollars here so…..

Pre-owned blue Seamaster 300M? It was good enough for Bond in the 90’s!

·

Maybe Muhle Glashutte?

Image

I'm drawn to their moon phase for a dress watch. The white dial comes on a bracelet.

·

Oris big crown. They do new movement in 38mm although don't think they've expanded dial options with the new calibre yet in that model.

·

How about an Oris Divers Sixty-Five or Aquis?

·

What about a Railmaster?

Save abit more and you could get a spring drive for 4-5k used :)

You can get that same watch new for $4.5k from Japan like I did: https://www.watchcrunch.com/K.evin/posts/total-steals-grand-seiko-sbga443-shunbun-and-sbga445-taitetsu-17690

You can always get a nice strap
