The Murph 38 has competition

I love the movie but is this watch as good?  Well I spent a week with it and my thoughts are complicated (as usual).

As this is a budget conscious crowd at a budget conscious time, let's see how the new murph 38 stacks up!

Is this on your Xmas shopping list?

I enjoyed the video. At that price AR should be mandatory. Also, cathedral hands on a field watch (made after 1955) is not what I am looking for in a new watch. So, not on my list.

My favorite watch is my Hamilton Field Khaki hand wind, however I would buy the Alpinist over the Murph simply based on the water resistance. I have always been a bit disappointed that the Khaki doesn't have better water resistance, but for the price I am fine with it. However at north of $800, I would expect better things. My cheapest Orient diver has a 200 meter rating! They are both great looking watches, but for the dough in question, I would get the Seiko no question. My only real complaint about the Seiko is the date wheel. I prefer the simple 3 hand dial without complications on a field watch, but I would learn to live with it.

·

Thanks for the video, very good as usual.  I have a pretty good military collection going but I would have to take the 42mm Murph if I was looking to add one.  I actually like the Alpinist better but you can't get a larger Alpinist.

Yeah I think they applied a "reflective coating" on this one 😅

The WR is a big difference 👍

You must be a big boy John 💪

love the video, i love interstellar movie too. matthew mcconaughey is one of my top artist. from the video i cant help but think murph is just a variant of khaki field with little change 😂, but it is a nice watch

On paper the Murph 38 sounded great to me, I thought this could be my second Hamilton (got a KFM). But when I checked it out in the store somehow it didn't click for me. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe the rebellious teenager in me doesn't like it because of all the 100 % positive gushfest reviews I've read or watched.

I really appreciate that your video isn't that kind of review, thank you!

·

I don't like the Swatch group and what they did to the brands under their umbrella, how each one was carefully stripped of anything that could even hint that it may compete with another Swatch brand, how they were pegged each in positions tiered by price and geography, and lost what made them unique.

Hamilton, is still doing well and they somehow managed not to completely lose their identity, which is why I can't understand the 38mm Murph because it's basically a Seiko mini Alpinist homage.

·

Had the Murph for about two weeks and I love wearing it. Obviously, the AR should have been better. On the plus side this is my first powermatic and I love it!

I also own the SARB017 and even though they have a lot of similarities, for me they feel like very different watches..it's hard to pinpoint

For now both are staying in the collection...

·

From a "movie-fan" perspective I would go with the original 42. I like the 38 version, but I think the other non-movie-related Hamiltons are the real competition to this Murph. I am not convinced this one is worth the price difference to the other Hamiltons.

·

Yeah the 7 got changed to 8 but the final score is correct 😅

It's not a very exciting watch if you remove the movie factor

Yeah that's my conclusion too 😐

·

Great video. I can’t wait to see the 38mm Murph in person. I like the movie connection, but definitely understand that without that, the value isn’t there. Seiko Alpinist is tough to beat from a style and value perspective!

tbh i like the Hamilton way better looks wise. but 38mm is small, maybe too small.

There's a bigger version...I heard 😉

·

Seiko wins this one. Hamiltons are great but I never had the urge to buy one. Blame the Asian being under Seiko's shadow, I guess and I'll recommend Hamilton all day long but...a Seiko still is what I'm going to buy.

·

It's a really good looking watch...and I like that the lugs aren't super long.

Not gonna get it, but I like it...and I'd pick it over the Alpinist.

·

I think I would have chosen the Murph over the Alpinist only because I'm really into minimalistic 3-handers lately, but the fuaxtina does not appeal to me.

Ive actually been quite happy with my Vaer A7 and still hoping I get a Serica 4512 for Christmas. Both those micros would be a 38+ on my crunch scale haha.

I feel like the second half of 2022 is telling me 2023 will be the year of the sub 40mm watch.

·

I love the film, but the price point really leave something to be desired, especially when you can get a Khaki King with a day/date complication

First post.

I picked this up 2 days ago, and I love its understated elegance. Yes, the AR isn’t the best. Yes, it doesn’t have a screw-down crown. Yes, I hate the (stiff as a board) embossed strap. Yes, the lume is weak. And yes, the polished bezel seems out of place on a field watch. You know what? I love it anyway, and you might too. It’s simple and pure. Go try one on and see if it ‘clicks’ with you.

Shout out to my friends at Topper Jewelers in Burlingame, CA. 👋 You guys rock.

Great videos @Max! I especially enjoyed your video on the Omega Speedmaster 38 Co-axial. It was 🔥.

Can't wait to give some microbrands the crunch score treatment 😉

Great video and the Murph (reduced) looks really good but even with the movie connection (Space!), the Hamilton on my list is the Khaki Field auto. This is timely because I am looking for a field watch and also really like the Alpinist especially purchased with the strong dollar discount from Japan but am torn between these watches and the Benrus 3061 Bullit reissue.

·

I have the 42mm "Cooper" Pilot Day Date and have to say is a great timepiece. I've been apprehensive about the 42mm Murph due to the long lugs, might think about the 38 but wish they kept the Morse code on the seconds hand as the original.

·

I love the murph 38, it is on my Christmas wish list. I went to have a look for some hands-on. Yet I own and was wearing my SPB155 Green baby Alpinist. The Murph 38 isn’t that much different than the SPB155, only having lume on the numbers and a classic black colour way and no date.

I’m indeed asking myself is it worth it for me to pay HKD6450 (~USD830, 10% discount at store) for a movie watch. And having two similar watches might be taking away wrist time from my SPB155 (paired with a vintage feeling leather strap). And the Murph 38’s second hands lacking that morse-code makes it feels much less collectible. Though I understand the Murph 38 is perhaps a watch to wear rather than sitting in a display box.

I don’t have answers to my questions yet. Though still itching to see the murph again after a few days. Perhaps a second hands-on will give me the answer I seek/need.

I love the first Murph, I don’t like the glares on the crystal, but I hear there is a solution for this. But my question is, is it the 38 mm a really Murph without the Eureka and the Morse code? For me- it is not. I will prefer the Alpinist.

·

Wondering if there will be a a comparison between murph 38mm with the new Seiko alpinist GMT SPB379J1, I'm considering to get one of them for my first automatic watch

Ehat is the solution to the AR issue. Intrigued!
