The first watch to DRIVE on the moon?

Big watches don't look good on my wrist, so I was ready to be disappointed. But being a space nerd I couldn't help myself. Well I got lucky this time because some how the 43mm lunar pilot wears small and it's allowed me to dig into Bulova's association with NASA. If you were on the fence, do you think you'll give this a go?

Not the first watch to drive on the moon, unfortunately.

The rover was used for all three Apollo 15 EVAs. Scott’s Omega Speedmaster crystal popped off during the second excursion. Scott switched to the Bulova for the third excursion.

Technically, then, the Speedy was the first watch to drive on the moon

Great video as usual. I had the 45mm version and got rid of it citing duplication with my speedy. That being said it was a fantastic watch in both design and quality.

My one disappointment with the precisionist chronograph movement is the lack of the sweeping running seconds hand. All three hand precisionist movements have the smooth sweep but I've never liked the styling of those models. At least you still get the high accuracy with the precisionist chronograph movement.

I think we can expect more hits from Bulova with Citizen now in the mix.

Green light!

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. Wears like a 41

Yes, can't wait to see them put out more variants, maybe even smaller sizes.

Love my 45mm version. The 43mm “Snoopy” (smart move Bulova!) is on my wish list. Don’t need a pricey Speedy in my Omega collection (2201.50, 2264.50, 2503.80). Went the extra mile and had Bulova change the case on my 45mm to the bead blasted version to make it a more period correct (not that quartz is) version. It always feels special wearing this watch.

·

I love my LP 45mm. It feels like a 43mm on my 8in wrist. I'm happy to see it in a smaller case size for others with smaller wrists. Was getting tired of the whining about the size lol. It's a STRAP MONSTER also!

Thanks Max for your content! Always appreciated.

Enjoy that watch!

Cheers!

Great video. The 43mm Lunar Pilot is definitively on my shopping list for 2023. It's just a pity that they didn't copy the charming "Tachometer" text that was on the original prototype (which probably was there because it was actually a UG model) to this model.

Wow, custom case? Nice 👍

That would been cool.

Maybe add a special Mexican version that says "Tacometer" 🌮

Damn it Max, I was blissfully ignoring this watch and you've brought it right back to the top of my list!

I am veeery interested for sure. I've always had an aversion to mechanical chronographs because I'm weary of the long term maintenance costs. The lunar pilot solved this in many ways because it's quartz and a plain Chrono. I can't handle the super busy dials. Also, the 43mm version has no date which is my preference.

I wouldn't call it a moonwatch only because I feel the coloquial association with the speedy is too much and it just makes it seem likes it's trying to pretend it's something it's not. The LP stands on its own I think, maybe as a second fiddle sure, but still as it's own alternative for people that is more attainable and still bang on. 100% still a space watch though.

I will definitely be looking at trying one on if I can find it in a store. I might just walk out with it too....

I think that they did a great job here, although I'm going to side with the "still too big for me" camp although I completely respect the historical relevance here. I really like the case, and if I squint it gives me Speedmaster Mark II vibes, which is easily one of my favorite speedies. Bulova is a historically-significant brand, it's awesome to see that they're still doing interesting things.

I’m impressed with the new snoopy 43mm version. Many have longed for this watch originally, but the previous 45mm won’t fit right on them. I own this version and it fits fine on my seven inch wrist. I like the larger diameter because with the marking and numbers it would be too small for me to make out. Plus it’s amazingly comfortable. All that said, I’m glad the 43mm is available now to appeal to more consumers. Solid review!

Good to know! That’s more within my comfort range.

Great vid! It’s on the list…that blue panda speaks to me!

Haha, glad I'm so convincing. Yeah at 1/10 the price of a new speedy, I can forgive a lot of small stuff when the fit is so much improved. Hope you get to try one soon!

Thanks buddy. For my 6.5 in wrist, this downsizing was a god send

·

Handsome watch! I also have a 6.5” wrist and think the 43mm is a step in the right direction. With that said, I really prefer smaller watches (hence why I own many vintage pieces) and I still think this looks pretty chunky for my wrist size. Nonetheless, really impressed with the watch design and hope Bulova continues to invest in the LP line. If they get this down to 40mm or less, I would definitely give it heavy consideration.

·

Great video! Glad to hear you are making gains in the gum 💪. @TimeToRide was gifted a black dial 45m for his birthday this year. I have been eyeing this watch ever since. The Blue/White "Panda" dial is beautiful. I do like the smaller dimensions as well. Interesting the bracelet is actually wearable. Looks good in the video. Always wish there was some taper . Seiko and GS sometimes skimp on the taper. One thing I wish all brands would get right from the factory .

·

Great video and interesting looking. Like your ‘Snoopy’ moniker, Omega watch out! Got me to look at the Bulova website, the older models are well discounted now too.

I’d recommend picking one up. That new snoopy 43mm is dynamite. I like the blue NATO that comes with it as well. Great grab and go watch.

·

I would still prefer the smoothness of the Seiko VK series quartz. I built mine on a 39mm case. The lugs on that Bulova are crazy long.

·

It's certainly a moon watch and as authentic as any Speedy. Save of course for the quartz movement, but as it's such a good quartz and I like quartz I can forgive that.

I would like it to have retained its bead blasted finish on the case but in the snoopy colour I could live without it I guess. Though as much as I love the Luna pilot it won't be on my incoming list for a while. Not until the prices soften .

If the 45 price is affected in a downward trend because of this release then I may possibly get one of those. Otherwise I shall have to live without.

Anyway another quartz chronograph (Amerigraph) is temping me in the form of the Islander Bethpage and though not a moon watch it does have its connection to the Grumon aviation company who built the Luna lander and got the value it show's , that will probably win my business.

Max

Wow, custom case? Nice 👍

Not that custom… It’s the same case they use on the calendar version of the watch with the newer Bulova logo. They seem to have gotten it backwards…!

·

I enjoyed the video, Max. Great work.

Loved this video Max, thank you! Wish there was a date version
