How to Tell a Watch is "high quality"

Watches are more than specs but on the internet sometimes it seems the numbers are all that matter. In this week's video, we explore the subtle signs to judge a watch's quality. Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the great and honest view. Even I understand and agree to your critics.

I still think it's a great alternative for similar watches as like Tudor.

Of course the watch isn't such processed as like a luxury brand but I don't know if I need to pay four times the price to get something slightly better.

I actually never considered to buy a Tudor. The prices and what I get for (design and materials) was never in a healthy relation. But Certinas DS Action Diver for 1K looks more fair to me.

I also understand the problem with the male links on the bracelet, but I never feld it when I've tried the watch even with my 16mm wrist. That might be related to the small 38mm size of the watch.

This shouldn't be a critic. Just my thoughts about Certina.

I still think Certina offers here a great watch for a resonable price. So you can tell me where did you throw it into the waves, I will get there and pick it up 😀

Haha I love the beef analogy 👏👏

I can understand if TUDOR styling isn't your cup of tea, but their build quality is really top notch. The certina is a fun watch, I was hoping for more honestly.

Good eye on the mismatched crown. Can't unsee it now and I'm a Certina fan. BTW congrats on coming out of the MD closet. You don't have to squirm anymore when occupation enters the conversation. 😁

Yep, now I just squirm when my chairman asks me "how's the YouTube channel?"

I don't think how a watch fits your wrist is a sign of how well it is made. I'd say making a small watch that doesn't fit a small wrist is a design and not manufacturing flaw but I guess that's just arguing vocabulary.

That isn't a certina problem though, Tudor does the same but at their clasp. Female end links are not without their issues either. If the watch is thick it disrupts the curvature (see Omega SMP300M diver).

Breitling Aerospace Evo has the same crown "issue". And that is not a cheap watch. I quite like the polished touches to be honest and I think that watch looks and feels the bomb. So in the end I don't think there is a way to tell how you feel about a watch but to have a look in person. One person's flaw is another person's feature.

I was already on a waitlist for this watch on Teddy Baldesarre. But after watching the video I am out. The lug to lug at 51 is too much. I am glad that I saw this video first. Saved me a lot of money!!!!!!!!!

·

I think the real problem is that so many watches, especially micro brands, are unavailable to try in the metal. I've changed my mind so many times once I've tried it on my wrist.

I don't know how we could solve this problem. Micro brands offer low prices due to lack of overhead. But they may be missing sales. I noticed Jack Mason now offers try before you buy thing. Prob a stab at solving this problem.

The DS Action Diver is one of those generic looking dive watches compared to Certina's own DS PH200 but offers good value. Personally, I think the steel variants offer much better value for $800 compared to the titanium variant for a Swiss diver from an established brand. For me in person, it just falls short of impressing you. Citizen does titanium watches better for a much lower price and they get it right in terms of finishing and being an overall package.

The male endlinks on this model barely curves, it's almost in line with the overall case and just wears quite large for a 38mm watch. When I tried it on, it made my 42mm Presage GMT feel smaller on the wrist. The proportions will look odd if you wear it on a small wrist thinking it will suit you. A strap would do wonders for how it will wear. The bracelet overall is decent considering it is titanium, and Certina is smart enough to supply half links to get a good fit to counter the lack of micro-adjustments. Nothing wrong with pins and collars especially on a titanium bracelet.

Whatever the guy smoked, definitely got the design right with the blue tint and chocolate dial.

Your Youtube video was entitled "Best Swiss Diver Under $1000" -- for that, I think that the Glycine Combat Sub fills that niche. That said, this is definitely a good value for Titanium as opposed to stainless steel.

@TimeToDesign

@Max @ckim4watches that’s exactly right! We’ve been doing it for a little over a year now and it’s been very well received. Watches are meant to be tried on which is why it was important for us to try and bring the store to your home!

Such a great idea! But what happens if it's scratched up on return?

·

I'm making the other half watch this one since he already bought 2 fake Seikos. I want to throw all fakes into the sea like you did in the video. Funny you half mentioned the smell thing because I can't stand the smell from Bronze or Brass watches.

·

Stay sexy! Now I'm sexy and crunchy! I'll take that all day long. I really appreciate this review as I have been tracking the titanium Certinas for a hot minute. Even with a 7" wrist the 50mm lug to lug is too much for me. I can pull one off with a G10 (NATO) strap but barely. Keep up the strong content Max.

·

Woah…we’re not staying crunchy anymore. Now we’re staying sexy. Sexy is what I do.😎

·

I like the titanium and I actually really dig that lume color, but you make a really good point with the end links. I have a bigger wrist, so I imagine I can pull it off, but I just plain don’t like the look of those end links.

·

I think if they made a better bracelets, gave it a titanium crown, ceramic bezel and chronometer movement they could sell it for 1500 and it would be a bargain and a real competitor to the Tudor

I still don’t know which under $1K diver is best after watching the video. Doesn’t seem like it’s this Certina…

It rarely happens and it's clear that you will be charged if the product is not returned the way it was received. We've seen some pretty funny instances where the watch was clearly worn for a night out or something, and they thought they could get away with it. 😂 Honestly, the customer experience this provides outweighs any sort of mishaps in the process, so it's a win win for all.

·

Hey all. I'm curious, how often do you need to go to service to do a watch-self-check with Powermatic 80 (this Certina ds2 version)?
