Have You Seen The New Top Gun Movie?

Maverick wears the same chronograph 36 years later, and it turns out to be a legit watch with a good story. I'm working on a video now! What did you think of the movie?

I'll probably wait until it hits a streaming service to see the movie.  I'm paying for all these services anyway, I don't need to shell out extra just to see it in theaters.

I voted better than the first, but really I think they are both equal. The newer one is to my mind just an 80/90s action movie shot in the modern day, which makes it stand out as a fun experience.

BTW great job on the last video seems like there’s more members popping in also the free watch realy drove them in!! 🍻👍🏻

Seen it, loved it. But really can't say if it was better or not. Both great in different ways. New one better for watch nerds though.

I was a huge fan of Top Gun in the 80s.  I thought they did a great job with Maverick.  Just the right amount of callbacks and nostalgia threads.  For me, it was better than the first one because of the actual flying.  It made it seem much more real to see the actors taking real Gs.

Thanks!  This one should be even better. I shot it in an aeronautic museum

I don't know...no Kelly McGillis. Had a crush on that gal when the original came out.

This movie was made for theaters. And that’s not something I normally say but occasionally a movie comes out and I’m so thankful I caught it in theaters. Inception is another one that comes to mind. Unless you have a bad ass audio set up at home seeing it at the movies is worth it. Catch a early bird special one day if you have the time.

Loved it! Nice shots of that IWC Chronograph timing the mission drills. Missed Meg Ryan.

I was waiting to get my Lejour back from service first.  I got it back but life has gotten in the way.

·

It was soo good!

Ditto. I heard it was good though.

Loved the new movie - fantastic action and great casting. The original 1980s movie is a classic and this new one did it proud - great watch shots in the movie.

Look forward to seeing the video Max.

Been wearing my 1980s Le Jour all day today...

And added this Orfina prototype to the collection not that long ago..

Thanks! Appreciate the kind words.

Like Conrad Hilton said about real estate and location...for me with watches it's condition, condition, and condition.

Living my teen years in the 80s and growing up in and around an Air Force base, I distinctly remember how the original Top Gun made a big pop culture impact. Undeniable how many fashion trends were spawned from that movie including the increased popularity of aviator-style sunglasses, leather bomber jackets, etc. Interestingly I don't recall as much about the watches but that was also the era of Swatch.

Maverick was definitely an experience made for the big screen. It's a must-see at a movie theatre. Every aerial scene was amazingly shot. The nostalgia was strong throughout the movie which I loved. It paid homage to the original without being kitschy. The fact that Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer used many of the iconic original set props (THE jacket, THE bike, THE watch) just added to the coolness and nostalgia factor.

Maverick has the propensity to once again become a pop culture trend setter. I won't be surprised to see people looking to once again buy aviator sunglasses, bomber jackets, and kickass pilot watches. I found a nice article talking about the two of the watches in the movie including THE Porsche Design watch:

A LOOK AT THE WATCHES WORN IN TOP GUN: MAVERICK - Montres Publiques - The vintage watch magazine

Better than the first and it left me listening to the soundtrack on repeat for two weeks as I entered a black hole of IWC fliegers!
