GMT per dollar $$

The Seiko 5 GMT might look like another SKX clone but in the metal, it's so much more than that! Every little detail has been worked over. I go in depth in this video from the perspective of a long time SKX lover/modder.

Can you name a better GMT per dollar 🤔

Thoughtful review.  I watched all the way to the end even though I knew that there was no giveaway.

it was an awesome watch, and quite affordable too. at some point i thinking im gonna get one since i dont have a gmt watch. but then after some research and desire to experience other than japanese watch i ended up with the glycine airman dc4 gmt. few things that i considered a plus point with the airman:

  1. its quite reasonable price comparing with what you get, for 850$ (which i pay) it doesnt hurt too much to save up a little more, but it depends whether you like the design or not
  2. 200m wr and screw down crown is a nice bonus for this glycine for me, absolutely beat the wr from the seiko
  3. saphirre crystal is better than hardlex for sure
  4. swiss movement gl293 you can get sellita sw330 or eta 2893 which perform better at 28800 bph, and decorated more beautiful than 3r34
  5. gmt bezel on these two are bidirectional but the airman have a locking system which is more usable in everyday use
  6. for the bracelet im gonna give to seiko since nato on the glycine is a bit sh*t and im not a nato person 😂😂
  7. the airman for sure has a richer history since it is the first gmt watch. im planning to give a "mini" lecture about gmt watch history if i found a person wearing rolex gmt 😂

so what do you guys think about my opinion?

Thoughts:  Glycine Airman can often be found on sale for between $500 and $600.

Im particularly excited for the Miyota 9075 to start trickling out to micro brands.  I’m hoping for some really excellent high beat traveller’s GMTs for under $750.

·

I've thought about making this my first Seiko & it filling the GMT slot, but I'm just not sold & I can't figure out why.

The Glycine I'm more in on because of the points @Unholy made above, plus I don't have a Swiss movement in my collection.

Decisions, decisions.

But I gotta cool it on watches. Got a big trip next May & maybe in January depending on how my college football team does this year.

·

I've also modded a lot of skxs in my time, so yeah I understand being burnt out on the general look of an skx and not being super excited with this release to be honest. I don't think it changes the game rather it adds to it. Cuz admittedly The general GMT functionality of the movement is stuff that we've seen many many years already in other Caller GMT from Swiss ETA and their equivalent counterparts. Still I agree that this is a pretty damn good value.

For not much more, if you know where to look, and you've mentioned the brand, I think Glycine is maybe one of the best value GMTs on the market outside of this new Seiko GMT.

You could take your chances on a Chinese GMT  mevhanical movement, but for maybe under S200, San Martin has quite the offerings.. but, there's that homage territory which not all are down for.

if you already have a seiko diver and like the glycine airman design i think you should go for it. you wont regret it, trust me 🍺

The Glycine GL293 is the ETA 2893-2, they just drop a digit out 😉

·

For the money, the Glycine Airman Worldtimer is a better deal IMO than the Seiko (for the record, I love Seiko and this GMT).  The GL0195 can be had for $650, has sapphire glass and incredible case finishing and detail on the dial. Not knocking the Seiko at all, but for the money, it’s Glycine all day for me

·

Damn, it looks like I gotta put glycine on the review list!!

Maybe @Unholy can drop a history lesson here and save me some research hours 😂

I agree with all of your points, which is why I got a DC-4 (the 12-hour, not the purist version) as my only GMT watch. If I didn't have this, the Lorier GMT would be my second choice in terms of value and design. I also agree with your point in another comment that a red GMT hand (or at least a red tip) would be a great finishing touch.

i saw it at peter kosta video which he painted the gmt hand with red colour. now that i see it i cannot unsee it 😂, it is so nice

For the price of the Seiko GMT, I’m totally in. But I really like the Bell & Ross Br V2-93 GMT Blue

Great looking timepiece!

·

Thanks for the thoughtful review - really appreciate the distinction between what is considered a "true" GMT . I prefer to refer to them as either a traveler's or office GMT. I agree with your assessment and would like to add that I find the quickset date feature on the office GMT much more useful than the jumping hour feature on the traveler. I may have to pick up the Seiko to add to my Oris Aquis GMT, Glycine Airman DC4 and Navitimer World...

·
Unholy

lol, that was a joke. but for future reference someday if you want to review it. here are some history recap @Max 😂

In 1953, Samuel W. Glur, a sales director for Montres AltusS.A., was on-board a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok to Calcutta. Samuel struck up a conversation with the captain about his wristwatch needs.

"During most of my journey from Bangkok to Calcutta I was seated at the place of the first Officer, next to the commander in a DC-4 from Thai Airways. The captain explained to me in detail what kind of watch pilots from all nations would actually need. According to him this watch is not on the market."

After touching down in India, Samuel Glur wrote to his friend Charles Hertig (current Glycine owner) about the potential market for a dedicated pilots watch. These specifications would be turned into a real watch just a few months later, the Glycine Airman.

This particular dc-4 model was named after the plane which samuel took on those flight the douglass dc4 propeller plane

Wow, I can see the video script right there!  Thanks man, I'm on the hunt now. Would you say the DC-4 is the model to look for?

·

for me (who like modern watch with vintage esthetic) it is. i think the dc4 is a modern interpretation from airman 1 with updated feature like saphirre crystal and right size (42mm). the other airman like airman 1 have a domed plexiglass which i dont like, the other like airman 40 is 44mm which is too big for me. the downside are only the nato strap, but it is easily replacable with nice leather strap. i'll wait for your video comparing airman vs seiko 5 gmt 🍺

·

Yes, I am excited about this new Seiko gmt.

Not in spite of the fact that my daily driver is a Glycine Airman worldtimer, but because most gmt watches, particularly the so-called true gmt watches are, essentially, dual-timers.
It makes no difference to me wether I can ‘jump’ the gmt hand, or the hour hand; I need to reference the gmt hand accurately at a glance, and I will always use the 24 hour scale bezel insert to set local destination time. I refuse to constantly pull the crown out.
Theres the rub, though - I actually do use utc daily, particularly when traveling.
I appreciate Seiko, and I particular appreciate that they have created a proper triple-timer.
Glycines aren’t particularly expensive, but this skx wannabe gmt is half the price or less retail of a grey market Airman gmt.
I will be getting one for my collection, and I will use it to its potential - and I won’t have anxiety about beating on it.

·

Well, one can get quite easily these days a Tissot Chemin des Tourelles GMT for around 450 USD or even less - and this is a "true" GMT, with the 80 hour power reserve "Powermatic" movement. For under 400 USD, one can buy the Mido Belluna GMT, which is an "office" GMT with a nicely decorated (and visible through a glass case back) ETA movement (2893-2), sapphire crystal glass and 100m water resistance. There are actually quite a few GMT watches available for several hundred bucks in the market. Most use this ETA movement or similar Sellita or Soprod ones. We'll probably also be seeing more of the new Miyota 9075, already used by several producers.

·

@Max stop sounding so anti steering wheel storage

I often store my seikos on the steering wheel of my Prius 😎🤘

(more seriously - 100% agree - it’s a tall cup of nope on swimming without a screw down!!!).

·

Great video, makes me get one gmt, already on my cart.

·

Well, I just did (finally, and thanks): Got the Blueberry/Batman/Batgirl et cetera, and love it to pieces, even though it's early hours, so-to-speak. Yep, it ain't svelte - it's right up there with my Anniversary Seiko 5 Sports Spacewalk as the absolute largest things I'll allow on my wrist. For contrast, the 90s-era Seiko SUS-series chronograph I've been wearing (before, during and after my motorcycle crash) stretches all of 36mm across my wrist, which momentarily made the 5 GMT loom huge. After some eight hours, all seems close to normal, which is a relief. I also have to remember that since I've been idle, post-crash, my wrists have dialed-down to a slightly-abnormal 6-3/4 inches, making every watch I own loom just that little bit larger than usual. Give it a few months and things should shift a bit back to normal. Meanwhile, the GMT should stay stuck to my wrist exclusively for the next month or two.

The Watch: Had it less than a day. Yes, smitten.

The Movement Check: Yes, it's just a phone app. No, I couldn't help myself. Yes, I'm happy with what it told me.

·

Definitely good looking and applied markers with chrome borders is a great upgrade. Just wish someone could convince Seiko to stop with the reverse lume lollipop on the seconds hand. I have never been able to understand why you would want an accurate watch that continually tempts you to read the time 30 seconds off.

The bracelet on mine is incredibly well made, but needs like 4 more removable links and I can’t wear it cause it’s huge 😂

·

I bought the SSK017(yellow dial)for my sons first manual watch. Perfect fit for a 17 year old. Not too worried if he bangs it up or just sits. GMT function is nice since we have family in Germany. I also own the 17 and the 21(gold trim on Bezel with black dial).
