Beating Seiko at Their Own Game

The Seiko 5 GMT was a fan favorite last year for the best GMT per dollar, but I got to spend some time with the Nodus sector GMT and it's a special watch, is it special enough to unseat the Seiko 5?

Oh, a GMT without a rotating bezel? This will be interesting. I much prefer the lack of cyclops and date window placement!

·

Just watched the video. I like that nodus, it's not perfect but it's a step in the right direction, I understand that watches that look like x watch are what sells, but let big brands like Seiko do that and microbrands do more risky designs.

Yes I love dressier GMTs, like the GS sbgm221 👍

That's the great thing about micros, they can start with a blank slate

At the end of the day, however, it's a... Nodus. Trying to move it on from a collection would be problematic, re: name recognition and trying to get people interested in it. And sure, for people who get one free, no biggie. Or for people who never sell their watches, no biggie. But I think the the majority of people, who do sell and trade their watches over time, the number of people happy to take a Nodus off your hands would have to be tiny compared to other brands, starting with Seiko, to use today's example.

·

Great video Max! Really enjoyed the thorough review and comparison.

I'm not interested personally in either watch, but really enjoyed your content and presentation.

Way too many GMTs in the past 12 months. Another example of bandwagoning by brands large and small.

What's it going to be next? Maybe modestly priced hour repeaters 😉

Come on, that's no way to live 😉 I buy watches with the heart and am always willing to suffer the consequences in the wallet.

Yeah getting a bit of GMT fatigue here 🥵

I was like that, once upon a time, myself! But the last five years or so, I've taken such wild swings back and forth with collecting, and cleared out over 50% of my collection at times, and rebuilt, and then done it again, I'm sort of hard-wired to looking at all the angles for my purchases now. Which is ironic, as I finally feel at ease with my collection for the first time in a while and could probably let myself go... a little :)

I don't even have time to sell my watches, I just throw them in a box under my bed, so out of sight out of mind 🤦‍♂

At least the boogeyman under your bed isn't smarting for choice when it comes to timekeeping...

Nodus is a cool brand and I like their sector offerings a lot. The Sector GMT is probably the best affordable dress GMT out there with unique styling to boot. This is very nit picky but the rectangular hands just weren’t to my taste. I seriously considered it but just couldn’t resist the Seiko SSK…. or the Traska Venturer GMT which was released last week. I can stop buying anytime, I swear!

Yeah I mentioned the tall chapter ring, I can see how it can be an eye sore

No, no, no. I love the tall rehaut. It gives the watch such depth. But like everything with wathches there is a battle between opposite views (date vs no date, bracelet versus strap etc). I have trouble with small depth watches where the dial is right below the sapphire - and I love a deep well (like the Seiko Marinemaster 300 depth). The Nodus has a surprisingly deep dial position and it really makes it more 3D. I have the Nodus Sector Malibu with same proportions and I like it, and am going to buy this Nodus GMT, partly because of the tall rehaut. So there you go - there’s always two opinions about any subject :-) Seriously like your video and the camera work is outstanding!!

·

I'm not yet in love with the Nodus, but I'll need to have it in my paws to know. It is a handsome watch and a winner for sure.

And the GS cream dial…awesome

·

Great video Max! I love that this is something different, especially in a 38mm. I'd agree it's fun and also has a bit of a classic field-watch vibe. That leather look is phenomenal. I might just try and pick one up, thanks for sharing.

·

The 38mm is a plus for the Nodus in my books, and better paper specs overall. It would definitely be an easier watch to travel with I think. After days of wearing the Seiko it would start to feel heavy if I'm moving around alot.

That said, I am actually a fan of dual time bezels more than GMTs. I got the Seiko GMT purely for aesthetic reasons, but I modded my 5KX with a dual time 12hr pepsi bezel insert because I find that easier to use and adjust. And hands down my best GMT will always be the Casio Royale.

A very good point. I wish we could do something about that, but unfortunately people value brand, even if it is not anything more than ink on a dial.

In a product sense, yes, it's just ink on a dial. Totally true, totally logical. But in a buyer's mind, it's any number of emotions that they link to that brand. And that's something that isn't always logical, and can't be easily countered as it's different from person to person. That's what you're really up against.

·

Honestly, I think I’d rather save an extra $200 and get the Traska Venturer GMT with the 9075 over the Nodus. Traveler’s GMT functionality, high beat movement, an extra 50M of WR, etc.

·

Loveyour videos... and now I want a Nodus pilot watch... although not the biggest fan of the movement.

·

What a great review Max, Love the guys from Nodus they are good.

The same Seiko movement in my new Prototype Avidiver II

That GS is oh so good.

That GS is oh so good.

Thanks - that was a limited edition from Watches of Switzerland.

·

I like nodus actually used sapphire crystal with screw down crown instead of Seiko’s hardlex and no screw down. Better value I think

·

Comparing both watches while taking into consideration of the retail price is a fair comparison, however not the reality as the SSK can be had at about $360. The Nodus is $450 plus another $105 for the bracelet. To be fair, the straps are $50 so the Nodus GMT on bracelet only would be $505. Now, with the Nodus coming in at 40% more than the SSK's street price, is it still all that comparable?

·

Interesting review; although, I'm not sure comparing the Nodus to the Seiko 5 GMT is the best choice. Besides the obvious sharing of the same Seiko movement, they have little in common. I can see someone wanting one style or the other (or both) but they don't fit the same niche at all. I would much rather have seen a comparison between the Nodus and the Farer GMT as they share far more in common esthetically. Obviously, the Farer is three times the price, but is it worth three times more than the Nodus? Both are colorful and have similarities in their dial as well as being 24 hour jumping hand GMTs. That is a review I want to see. For the record, I own the Seiko 5 GMT and love it and would consider the Nodus (as I have considered the Farer) but neither are replacements for the Seiko as they share little in common (IMHO). Still, an interesting video and I appreciate you taking the time.
