Victorinox’s smart looking beater review

Okay before anyone jumps on me I am quite willing to admit that G-Shock make better beaters. My GST-B400D was bought at around the same price as this was, now selling at a cheaper rate, and can do much more with it’s bluetooth connectivity, tough solar quartz and all those additional features the G-Shock definitely gives more for less. But if that was the only reason we bought watches no one would go through the hassel of buying a Rolex and the only brand you’d see in an SOTC would be Casio. I mean come on look at it.

Image

Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder but in my opinion this just looks better than the equivalently priced G’s and this Titanium version is also much lighter than my G-Steel while still having passed the 130 strength tests that means it can give G-Shock a run for it’s money, and if you’re someone who worries about scratching up your watch it comes with this (in my opinion) silly looking cover.

Image

Which I don’t like but they have put some thought into it even stamping the crown cover.

Image

Is this watch perfect? No like I said the equivalently priced g-shocks will give you more and the size and strap selection on this one means that this maybe isn’t a watch a lot of us can wear to work, whereas there are a lot of other beaters that can be. While we’re talking about straps the lug width on this is 21mm, which annoys me as someone who likes to change out straps but doesn’t want to buy some just for this. Also I did try a more subtle strap and it just looked strange, a strap monster this isn’t. Also while there is some lume here it’s not great so for those that find that important I’d probably avoid this.

Despite those negatives I really like this. Yes it’s huge but I think of this as a beater so I don’t care, this one only has a standard quartz movement and there is a mechanical , but that’s more than double the price. I just love the design of this and the QC is excellent. Everything from the way the crown feels to the positioning of the text and markers is really well done, so if you’re looking for a tough smart looking beater I can recommend this one.

  • Incredibly tough passing 130 tests
  • 200m WR with a screw down crown
  • Light for it’s size thanks to the titanium
  • Standard quartz movement
  • Expensive compared to similar beaters

Great review.

I suspect that outside the watch community there aren't many people cross shopping G-Shock vs. Inox. I know in my work the Inox would be a completely suitable watch for everyday use, but a G-Shock looks a bit too "toyish" for the office.

I can see a use for the outer case, if I was going white-water rafting/kayaking I'd be tempted to throw the cover on, and protect the watch a bit more.

That’s a very good point about the adventure sports I hadn’t considered it. If you’re comfortable wearing it on that strap at the office great, but it’s just a little too big and garish with that strap for me to wear at work. But can definitely wear it the rest of the time.

I know. Everything about this watch makes it seem like it could take on anything even the model name sounds quite hard. 💪

I ran a red dial Inox diver almost every day for a few months while. Total tank. The most overbuilt watch I think I’ve ever owned, and I had. Sinn EZM full of Argon. 🙄

I’m with you on the choice as a beater far more interesting than a G-Shock. Great review!

I tried on one of those divers wow was it heavy. 💪
Like I said in the review the G-Shock options give you much more for your money but this is just cooler to me.
Thanks for the comment.

I've honestly had my eyes on the gray dial with pink seconds hand, or the red dial with red seconds hand, or the green on green. I found a green on green, but it was on a website I don't trust at all. I emailed them and the email kicked back. I tried to call them during their business hours and the phone call was rejected. I thought $98 for an INOX seemed cheap lol

Yeah that would be an amazing price might be for the best that you didn’t get through 🍀.

Right, something smelled ultra fishy about that...

Nice review, and no need to apologise for the G-Shock comments, the Gs are less legible, almost overdesigned, although I opted for a plainer 'lady's' copper-coloured G-MS before the metal Casioaks were introduced, and I'm still drawn to the Inox.

It’s a great watch. The steel ones are really heavy but the Titanium feels great.

I'm on the cusp of ordering a steel one for £300, but undecided, is it too bling for a small wrist (albeit very large hands)? But it's a gorgeous-looking lump of metal, my other watches are all rather classy and slim, this could be a welcome contrast, despite being opposite to convention (ie proportion the face size to wrist size).

I don’t think it’s too bling. Like I said you might find it a bit heavy but I think it looks great.
