Do you keep your watch boxes, and do you consider the making of them at all?

I like it when brands put in a bit of thought into the packaging of their watches; the diving canisters that come with the Citizen Promaster line, Dan Henry’s cylindrical tube with a travel pouch even a nice wooden box like the one pictured courtesy of Hamilton; I appreciate that and it makes them easier to hold onto. How about you? Do you keep the boxes? Do you care how the watches are packaged?

Wooohooo !! First one!!!

I think some companies make great watch boxes (I'm looking at you Omega), and others skimp (Rolex), but in general I keep them all. I look at it this way, I can put them in a bookshelf, on a table or in a variety of places that can add ambiance to your dwelling. I'm a fan of a good watch box.

Thanks I really enjoy the content here and don’t want to clog up the page with stuff no one cares about but I was interested in this. 👍

It’s a good post…

My 2 cents:

I love the boxes that comes with the watches especially the special editions. I wish I can display them as well but as you know they can be bulky and outright ridiculous at times. Also I thought it only happens to watches but jewelry as well!! I bought my wife a nice necklace and you know a necklace just small dainty little thing nothing outrageous, me thinking it will come in this little package but I guess I’m wrong…its huge!
the problem is storing these nice storage boxes. my closet is packed with them and my AD suggested stuffing them in an unused luggage, it’s not a bad idea but I haven’t done it yet cuz I store the extra links that I take out within their own boxes and I would hate to go find the box for something…make the long story short I’m lazy and I love the watch boxes 😂😉🍻

That’s a really interesting idea. I’ve been keeping all of mine in a cupboard. I ‘be got 21 watches currently 5 of which I’m trying to sell and 4 more incoming and am running out of space.

I’m with you completely as I said in a previous reply I’ve been keeping them all in a cupboard and am running short of room. I don’t want to compete with my wife’s jewelry as I’ll almost definitely lose.

·

I've not kept any of the boxes mine have come in, not because I don't want to, but because none of them have warranted it.

Cardboard is crap no matter how nice the printing or embossing is.

Once I get a watch that comes in a metal or wooden box, I'll start keeping them and causing a fight with the wife at the same time.

·

I just bought a new house and while packing the old, I decided to throw out the 30+ boxes I had been storing instead of taking them with me. I don’t plan to sell any of my watches, so don’t really need them for anything. I did save a couple, like the Hamilton box, though.

·

I stick in the <£200 range so whenever I get a nice box it's like Christmas. I tend to keep one box from each brand

·

I'd rather spend money on a quality watch than on the packaging.  All my watch boxes just take up space, its ridiculous.

·

I keep the boxes of my nicer watches, but boy and I dreading the box that my someday to own Speedy Pro will come in, it's just huge!

I greatly appreciate the effort that Fears watches goes to, their boxes are slim and narrow, just enough to hold the watch laying flat, like a pencil case. Presentation is key, I get it, but I don't need my watch to come in check-able luggage.

You can also buy a "stand" of sorts and have it as a display like an open box.

You never know I keep waiting for my wife to comment on the fact that we’ve got 21 watch boxes stacked in the cupboard but she seems okay with it. Maybe because of the jewelry issue she takes it as a given?

That sounds sensible a lot of my watches were impulse buys and I might well get tired of some.

I feel similarly about my CW and Dan Henry boxes. I’d suggest that it’s a microband thing but Boldr watches are packaged like they’re gold bullion.

I like that idea but unfortunately I‘be only got 1 watch if each brand.

·

Yeah I’m a big fan of them. Useful and easier to store

My wife wants to keep nothing that isn't currently being used. Mostly because we have limited storage, but also because she's a minimalist and wanderer at heart. So me keeping boxes watches came in would start a fight.

Good luck maybe if you tell her it’ll make it easier to sell? I’m sure mine’s going to comment soon she’s already asking about the number of watches. 😬

I keep the boxes, even the cheap ones.  I don't know why I do it.  I can say it has come in handy when I was ready to give a watch away or sell it.  I'll clean the watch up, put it back in the box with the extra links and present it to the recipient.

I understand what you mean about paying for packaging and that’s definitely the case with the luxury brands. However I don’t buy them and with the affordable range I do like that if I’m keeping a box it’s nice/interesting rather than a cardboard box.

I keep all of my boxes, regardless of price range of the watch. If space were a concern, I'd probably do things differently.

Even at the affordable range, packaging can have a huge impact on the initial impression of a watch. I recently picked up a MoonSwatch ($260 USD), and the cardboard packaging helps lower expectations - the flimsy cardboard packaging is befitting a toy watch (the watch itself is better than the packaging suggests).

Contrast that with the packaging from my Humism Dasein, a watch retailing for approx $330 USD. The packaging is something similar to what you might find with Apple products. High quality cardboard, with felt/foam inserts, and a very premium feel. Humism watches feature a kinetic dial, and the packaging reflects that. Cutouts in the outer box end up creating an interesting pattern as you push out the inner box. Overall, the packaging shows an attention to detail that carries through to the watch itself.  The watch is about 25% more expensive than the MoonSwatch, but the packaging suggests that the Humism should cost several times that of the MoonSwatch.

That’s exactly why I keep mine. The boxes I throw away are the ones I’m 100% sure I won’t want to get rid of.

I like this and it’s a take I hadn’t considered.

I keep all the boxes in case I need to sell and ship a watch. They are made to handle a drop or two.

·

I love the presentation of a great box when I buy a watch (Omega, you are all aces!).  A great box ups the moment, and even though I don’t use them after purchase, I love having and keeping the boxes.

Godspeed, my friend

I recently bought an Ingersoll watch because of their connection with Timex and I was blown away by the quality wooden box and the thick metal certificate of authenticity.   Very impressed and did not expect something so high quality for a watch in that price range.

I keep the boxes and hate them because I have no place to store them. I hate the big heavy Omega box the most. I live in Seattle in a beautiful condo designed by a famous architect. 750sqft. He did not design space for watch boxes. Starchitects...I'm lucky to have a closet.

·

I always keep the boxes and papers if for no other reason than if I ever decide to sell the watches, I should be able to get more money for them with the box and papers than without.

We moved from an apartment to our house about 2 years ago and still don’t have the space for the boxes. What happened?🤷‍♂️
