Sure, I paid an even 1000€ for it brand new (down from 1250€). That is including tax. Not sure how the prices are in the US, but here in Germany I found some good used pieces at around 900€, so I decided the extra 100€ were worth it to get it new.
The accuracy is fine for me. It runs way better than the accuracy Seiko states. I rotate my watches almost every day so I have to wind and set it almost every time I put it on. Over one or two days I didn't notice anything significant. I would say it is not a watch to just pull from a winder after a month without having to adjust it, though.
If used, try to find a trusted seller or shop near you. eBay would scare me. I would probably buy new and see if the ad is willing to give out a little discount. Always good to have a place to go to if there is a problem with the watch. Also having a good relationship with an AD is great of you just want to pop in from time to time to check out new releases or watches that interest you, but you do not consider buying.
I like the idea and think if you replace one of the divers with a tank you have a perfect 4 watch collection. Pretty close to what I have in mind for myself. Speedy, Tank, Seiko diver + datejust is where I will hopefully end up soon (or let's say whenever I get the call from my ad). I am thinking of selling my Baltic Aquascaphe so I do not have diver redundancy. And my g-shock doesn't really count :D
Never a good idea to project the behaviour of one person to a whole group.
But it is sad that an employee at an AD did not know what they are selling. If it was a customer I think it would be totally fine. Not everyone who wants a nice watch is a watch enthusiast. We have to understand that we are a small sub group of watch customers. So I think it is just a bad look for your AD. They should spend more time training their employees.
I am not really collecting in the sense that I just buy stuff to own. I want to use the things I own. That said, I have far more guitar effect pedals than anyone needs. Also guitars. And synthesizers.
