Opinion: G-Shocks and Digital Watches? Yay or Nay?

Hey Watch Fam,

What are your thoughts on digital watches? And of course the Casio G-Shock overall?

The watch community is often seem to be "elitist" or "purist" that belittles any quartz or digital watches. Wanted to know your honest opinions on these watches! Thanks all!

Background story:
I recently wanted a beater that could withstand the harsh conditions of hiking, running, and also diving. Came across the good old trusty G-Shock that reminds me of the watch I have as a kid (despite the newer Casi-oak options). Bought this watch quickly and started tinkering with it like the old kid me

Been wearing it everywhere and it brings a smile from the nostalgia of those simpler times when I thought this is the coolest watch ever ( started timing everything, playing with the back illuminator, you get the picture)!

Actually there is a lot of love here for G-Shocks.  While not haute horology, most folks recognize their indestructibility.  I have a bunch of them.

·

Personally, I love digital and quartz watches and think they are an integral part of any watch collection! My moon watch is a quartz watch, the Lunar Pilot, and I also have a Precisionist, a Computron, and a vintage LCD digital from Bulova in my collection. Plenty of other digital watches in my collection; Timex, Seiko, Citizen, Armitron, Sanyo, and even Texas Instruments, along with a bunch of Casio watches, including a Pro Trek and two G Shocks, a GWM5610 and a GMWB5000.

·

I love a good digital watch, and am particularly fond of Timex.

I've never been a fan of Casio, but I get why lots of people love them. I find the ruggedness of G-Shocks is overplayed, since your wrist can't take the abuse the watch can, and most other watches can stand up to outdoor activities.

Digital watches rock!

Everybody needs a good beater / tool watch and digital G shocks are definitely suitable 👍

Yes, it seems like there is a lot of hype especially with recent releases of metal versions and also the infamous casio-oak. But unfortunately, a lot of people are still turnt off by watches with batteries

Thats a great collection man! Thinking of adding the omega x swatch to the collection? Ive been thinking but I dont know if its worth $160 than a casio gshock

I will go out on a limb here and say that the Casio DW-5600 is the pinnacle of watch making.  Every watch built after it should be considered a luxury item, because the only watch anyone would ever need has already been built.

I can see your point, but the gshock just gives people the assurance in the security of the watch. While I own a seiko Sarb033 that can withstand 100m WR, i dont think i will ever use them snorkeling as I dont want anything bad to happen to it. But a gshock and timex i will do as its a beater watch that have been tested time and time again

Racing a marathon or a a triathlon, doing an ocean swim, etc… a 40 gram bomb proof Garmin showing my real time km splits/HR/ and timer is best.

Automatic watch for when I’m being a fancy fellow during regular life.  🕺

Digital and quartz are amazing piece of horology history 💪🏼

Nothing wrong with digital and/or quartz watches. There is a very high chance that those contributing on this forum today started with digital/quartz watches - I certainly know I did.

I love my #Casio G-Shock, it's such a rugged all-rounder. ⌚

·

Honestly, G-Shocks or digital watches in general aren't for me, but watch collecting is a hobby that grows on personal taste. I know guys who love their G-Shock, Breitling Colt digital, or whatever it maybe. If you like digital watches, that's awesome, I just like seeing more people take up this hobby!

·

Sorry but I've not seen any negative comments about digital watches, especially G-Shocks on WatchCrunch, so I'll have to disagree with the comment about "The watch community is often seem to be "elitist" or "purist" that belittles any quartz or digital watches."

G-Shocks are beloved by all collectors as far as I'm aware, I have 3 in my collection and they sit proudly beside my Sinn and Swiss watches and I'm sure I'm not alone there.

I’m ashamed to admit this, and I hope I don’t offend anyone, but I don’t like g-shocks or digital watches. At all. i don’t know why, but they just aren’t for me. But I do appreciate them. Just can’t get one for myself.

No offense taken!

Watchcrunch seems like a pretty great place, where we can all express different opinions and tastes, and appreciate one another.

I love G-Shocks (mainly digital/analog hybrids, but I have one digital) but can certainly appreciate that they're not your cup of tea.

And.... if I may add.... don't be ashamed to admit what you don't care for, there's no shame in having your own preference! 👍

Because I'm a new collector, and am trying to put together a modest collection, G-Shocks and other Casio watches (digital, analog and hybrid digital-analog) are the mainstay of my small collection.

I'm thrilled to be collecting after owning just one watch for most of my life, and I love the diversity of having different watches for different occasions.

I've never felt anything but warmth here so far, and I absolutely LOVE this group, where everything from a Casio F-91W to a watch that's from the Holy Trinity of Swiss timepieces is welcomed and appreciated.

·

Welcome to the hobby. keep in mind for sure Casio G shock is the go to watch when the tough gets going.

I somehow have 6 G Shocks now, 6!

I lost count when the bug bit me😀...now waiting for the tough solar Casioak to be released..

the new CASIOAK Solar is something you should look at sounds like it is all you👍👍

I agree 100%, William.

Before I started collecting, I had a Casio WVA-470 Waveceptor Solar for years, and the solar/atomic features made me fall in love with the no winding, no batteries, no setting aspect of the watch.

I've since branched out into other watches, but the solar/bluetooth attributes of the GA-B2100 'CasiOak' series that's coming out soon have got me very intrigued. 😍

I think digital watches are a hugely important piece of the horological tapestry.

Just because something is cheap and simple doesn't mean it's less important or less noble. Look at the Bic Biro; it may not be fancy but it does the job it's designed to do and it does it well. It can also be used in an emergency tracheotomy .. and a Mont Blanc fountain pen can't do that.

I don't have dozens in my collection as some do, but I love both my digitals...

Very impressive just looking at the details.

·

Gshocks are super cool!  While not haute horological I think they offer superb value for money, my gshock square is the most affordable watch in my collection but it’s one of my favorites - it’s all about level of enjoyment for me

·

G-Shocks are very cool, rugged, tough, rugged, tough… Ok. I’m repeating myself. Lol

I got G-5600UE-1, DW-6900-1JF, GA-2110ET-8ADR (Grey versions) & GM-2100-1A1

AE-1200 (Casio Royale) & DW-290 (mission impossible)

Love them all!

·

When I started collecting watches again, I only wanted automatics. Then came a solar. Didn't want to have any Casio (while my first love). My husband bought a secondhand GA-110 (white case, rose gold accents), which was way to big for him. After I replaced the battery he wanted to give it to a nephew. I kept buying automatics in the meantime. After the GA-2100 stealth version through a voucher I got for Christmas in 2021, I started buying some of the AE series (1000 and 1500) I recently bought the 1200 and 1300. The new B2100 red lightning and a B0100 stealth. And the F91W.

Casio is my new found love/obsession. As I'm planning to buy the G-Shock 5610U fully black. And thinking of modifying my old 2100 with a generation 5 all black case. Red strap. Maybe replace the dial with a red or orange one.

what model is the square garmin?

·

what model is the square garmin?

Square one is the 920XT.  An older model, but was the top triathlon watch option at the time.   If I was buying a garmin today I'd go with the Epix in Ti.  It's got a bright OLED sceen and 6 day battery life.  The 15 min 5k on the square is my PR - so I save that shot!!
