An inadvertent day of watch shopping.

I swear that I didn’t plan this in advance.

Today was a hot day in New York City and I wanted to take my wife and my 3 year old boy/girl twins someplace with air conditioning and indoor space where they can run around.

I thought “shopping mall” which betrays my suburban upbringing.

I took the family to the Oculus at World Trade Center and Brookfield Place.

STOP ONE: Omega Boutique at Brookfield Place

My wife and daughter went to the restroom so I took my son to the Omega just to look at watches. I have to start my kid early, now is as good as ever.

Watches tried: (me) Railmaster, obligatory Speedy (wife, who joined later) Aquaterra 34 pink dial, and a Two tone Constellation.

Son’s reaction: He was happy to wear my SPB071 when I took it off to try on the Omegas, so much he didn’t want to give it back to me, also “O-M-E-G-A, Omega!”

Daughter’s reaction: She walked in like she owned the place, while on my wife’s lap, she pointed at the case of the Constellations and said “I want that watch!”

The world is not ready for her.

Wife’s reaction: Liked both watches, like the more expensive one even more. After we left, she told me she thought the Speedy was basic and she preferred the pistachio green Breitling B09 chrono.

I think I am slowly turning her into a watch person. Also, her comment about the Speedy broke my heart.

My reaction: I seriously thought the Railmaster was discontinued, I’ve always wanted one, but now that I’ve seen it in the flesh, I have doubts. Like if I wanted a time only watch with arabics, I think I would rather get a Tudor Ranger for half the price. Also, my wife hurt me, but it’s Mother’s Day weekend so I’ll shut up about it.

STOP TWO: Swatch store, World Trade Center

We decided to buy watches for the kids.

Watches tried: (son) none, he wanted a specifc red adult watch and was not interested in any of the kid watches because none of them were red enough (daughter) ALL THE FLIK FLAK WATCHES ESPECIALLY ALL THE SPARKLY ONES AND THE ONES WITH UNICORNS

Watches purchased: A pink transparent flik flak watch on a sparkly rainbow strap.

Daughter walked out of the Swatch store with a new watch on her wrist and a shopping bag like this:

The world is definitely not ready for her.

STOP THREE: Tissot store, World Trade Center

The kids darted into the Tissot store after leaving Swatch, got Tissot swag, I tried on both the 40 mm PRX and the 35 mm PRX. 35 mm is too small (and I like small watches) but comfortable, and while the 40 is the perfect size, the bracelet doesn’t fit right because there is no articulation in the first link. Shame.

Then a long subway ride home to a blown naptime for the kids. Good day. Fun was had by all.

Just wow…you should go back to Omega and get that Speedy to reward yourself for a hell of a day.

Yeah right, that wasn't planned. I have a 5 and 2y old and while I'm not deliberately trying to go look at watches because who wants energetic kids running around a watch store, I definitely do reinforce options where there are watch stores or suggest options where I might "just pop into" a watch store because, "oh , look what's here". 🤣

Sounds like a perfect fam day!🤙

Good luck finding a big shopping mall type place in Manhattan that *doesn’t* have watch stores. Hudson Yards has a Watches of Switzerland, a Panerai boutique, Cartier and I know that’s not the complete list.

All I wanted to do was to pop my head in to Omega, everything else was not my doing. My wife wanted to go to Swatch, the kids darted into Tissot.

Haha, I'll buy that. It sounds like you have well behaved kids! I can only go if I have one of them with me. Sometimes, my son will out me and tell his mom, "oh I know that place, I went with daddy". Son, son... Don't all guys inherently know the bro code?!?

Speedy, Speedy, Speedy, but of course I don’t have to worry about college for two. 😊

Well behaved enough. They were extremely well behaved in Omega, totally different story at Swatch and Tissot.
