Debating trading my 21’ Omega SMP for a 2010 era quarts SMP

Fellow watch nerds, I need your help! I am debating selling my 2021 Omega Seamaster Professional in order to buy a black dial quartz SMP from around 2009 reference 212.30.41.61.01.001

The reason? Solely based off dimensions. My wrist is 6.5 inches and although this SMP doesn’t look out of place, it’s always slightly bothered me how big it is. It makes it a bit harder of a wear during physical activities and the added weight on my wrist is noticiable while playing backyard football or something. (I prefer not to take my watches off)

However, I absolutely love this watch and the design of the SMP is one of my favorite ever.

The dimensions of the old quartz smp diver are 41mm x 12mm thick x 20mm x 48mm lug to lug. A significant decrease all around, I imagine it must wear like a dream. I’ve never seen it in person.

Will omega release a reduced sized SMP offering this year as they do with millions of their models? Idk but I probably shouldn’t hold my breathe.

My only hesitation is that I might regret going from the amazing movement and craftsmanship in the modern SMP for a quartz watch. I love quartz watches and it doesn’t bother me on other watches I own, but for the luxury space I’m not sure how I’d like it knowing it’s a lesser “build quality”. I plan on getting an SMP that will permanently stay in my collection.

Are their any black dial quartz owners out there? What’re your thoughts?

Thanks for the help!

I had the same issue with the SMP300. But, solved the problem with a very simple change.

I got a black Artem loopless sailcloth strap, with Omega-style deployant. No matter how heavy the watchhead is, swapping it out for the strap will significantly lighten the load and give you a better fit. Moreover, the Artem straps have an out of this world comfortable leather underside, coated with a thin layer of rubber. It will transform the watch wearing experience for you.

All-in, it'll cost ya ~$200, but it'll transform the wearing experience, you'll get to keep the watch you love, and I think you'll be amazed by how much more comfortable the watch will become for you.

My Dad has a SMP Quartz (was mine for a little bit) , it's going on 17 years old now (never serviced), yes it does wear very well.

That’s amazing, what has your experience been over the years having a quartz model. Does it ever make you feel like it’s an inferior watch or is the luxury quartz movement as good as people say it is? Would you be able to tell me the weight of the watch in grams on bracelet? really appreciate your input!

I’ve been thinking about getting a speedy quartz as well (trading in my gmt “bond” seamaster for a quartz “black bond”). But, I’m fearful of how long I can service it (not sure when parts will become obsolete)

That’s a very cool watch! I forgot about that gmt style. What’s the reason you’re considering trading for the quartz?

I don’t wear it as much as I thought I would; the blue dial just doesn’t do it for me.

·

Big watches wear better on leather for the weight. Just bend up the leather to give it better curves and make it comfortable.

It sounds like you also hold the luxury quartz movement in high regard?

Thanks for the tip! Still I do seem to get it caught on more things due to the size and weight, and I am concerned with it looking potentially oversized on my wrist. But I could just be in my head about that. It’s such a beautiful watch it’s hard to part with.

Or an Erika’s Original strap same deal …

I do… but it’s still hard to get my head aligned with spending $2-3k on a quartz watch.

I dont own the watch, my Dad does, he loves it, set it and forget it and it's always ready to go.

·

Yes I feel the same way. I absolutely love the watch even as big as it is, but it feels to bulky to be a daily wearer or something I’d wear while hiking/camping for a week. (Most people probably would never consider wearing a 6k watch camping 😂)

As with most things in this hobby, I am probably just to in my head about it 🤪

Agreed. Tim makes a compelling case for omega quarts movements near the end of this video, interesting to hear. https://youtu.be/o6U2V9IBFTI
