“The Watch” book by Gene Stone is a great read and an eBay bargain at less than £10. Interesting and lavishly illustrated.

There is a passage at the beginning describing watch brand hierarchy in terms of places in an old European royal court. I think it’s rather well put..

Patek as the king. Rolex as the knight. JLC as the prime minister.
