Vintage Yellow Gold Watches with Rose Gold Clasps

I am having trouble with an eBay sale. The purchaser is upset that the inner part of the 18k gold clasp is rose hued.

having had several vintage gold watches from different makers I know this is just how they are. I assume that this was done for strength at the time.

The specific watch is a cartier, but I’ve uploaded a picture of a Rolex as it illustrates it well.

I can’t see any discussion of this online. Can anyone point me in the direction of any articles or similar?

It’s very frustrating as if you google “vintage cartier yellow gold deployant clasp” you can actually see the insides are rose on most of them.

would also be interesting to see any pics of people’s rosey clasps.

And to be clear I realise these days the clasps are all yellow. I assume alloys have moved on.

I've never known this to happen with my older gold watches, but I'm no expert. My gold watches have tended to darken over the years, from yellow gold to a darker yellow gold, probably from the alloyed silver darkening over time.

Check out the google search and all the pics I’ve marked in red (even a couple of the other pics look rosey when you click through.)

It must be an alloy thing, perhaps copper content? Chemistry literature is surprisingly quiet on this sort of thing happening.

What is the seller upset about? If the images aren't convincing it must be a deeper issue?

I’m absolutely baffled. I can understand his initial concern - if you’ve paid a lot of money for something you want it to be right. but then one quick google shows that it’s all normal.. So I just don’t get it..

He’s not asked to return the watch - yet. But the reality is that if he did eBay / I would accept it. Maybe he feels like he needs a reason to return it so is making an issue out of nothing?.. Who knows..

That may unfortunately be the easiest solution as the seller either seems unwilling/unable to authenticate it with Cartier or Cartier won't help for whatever reason.

What a beauty!

sounds like someone who is jerking your chain, and /or having second thoughts, or wants you to give an amount back. ridiculous,

I have seen this before on some of the older model DD. I think the guy is just nitpicking. When you wear the watch you can't see it anyway.
